As we finish up the term I want to congratulate our students on how well they have started the year and for their efforts in ensuring they are working to the best of their ability.
Parent Teacher Evening, 31 March 4-7pm
We hope that parents are able to take this opportunity to meet briefly with teachers to check in on how their children are going and to make any adjustments needed to support their learning. Information is also available through Connect, which includes results for assessments. Academic reports will be available at the end of Semester One.
Parent Information Evenings
This term we have held information evenings for our Year 7 and Year 12 parents. We hope that the information provided has been helpful and really value having this opportunity to keep connected to our families. We thank all the staff who have been involved in these, and also to three of our 2020 Year 12 students who returned to provide words of advice to our current Year 12 parents. Thank you to Chamoda Idamgedara, Tara Fitzgerald and Adrian Cowin for giving up their time to give back to their school.
House and Interschool Swimming Carnivals
Congratulations to all those who participated in the House Swimming Carnival earlier this term. It was a wonderful day with perfect weather. Thank you to all our parent spectators for providing such a community feel and to our organising and supervising staff.
World’s Greatest Shave
Once again our school has participated in this worthy cause. It was great to see so many students colouring their hair and those students and staff who shaved their head to raise funds for those facing blood cancer. A special mention must be made to Sari Oliver who raised $5244 for the cause and our Year 10 student leaders who raised $567 from their cake stall.
Harmony Week
Week 7 saw our school celebrate Harmony Week. Congratulations to our student councillors and staff who coordinate the fun activities for the week. A special mention must be made to Lauren Johnson who was the organiser this year in collaboration with our wonderful Languages team.
NAPLAN online
NAPLAN is back on again this year after being cancelled due to COVID in 2020. Some preparations are under way to test online systems and students will participate in a load test during Week 8. NAPLAN is scheduled to run during Week 4 and 5 next term. We encourage students to use their own devices where possible to ensure they are familiar with the technology.
Enrolments for 2022
Can you believe we are already starting to plan for 2022? We have just held our Year 4-6 Parent Information Evening and will hold our School Open Day on 23 April. Please visit our website under Prospective Students section to find all relevant information and enrolment forms.
School board update
I am pleased to announce the new members of the school board are Shireen Pivac, Tammy Winterbourn and Peter Rudolf as our parent representatives.
Your Move Schools
Our school has now achieved Bronze accreditation with Your Move Schools based on the work of the Sustainability Committee in 2020. Congratulations to all those involved and I know that this group are working on many initiatives around the school that positively impact our environment.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone all the best for the upcoming Easter school holidays.
Helen Deacon
Principal
As Term 1 draws to an end, looking back it has been a relatively smooth start for our Year 12 students. They are now back into the routine of school, study, excursions and incursions, all aimed at providing the students with the necessary skills to support them in achieving the best results possible but also to assist in their transition to life after school.
Our Year 12 students await the arrival of the Leavers Jackets which are due early in Term 2, These will then become a uniform essential for the Year 12s, ensuring they are readily identified as the class of 2021.
The first round of OLNA testing has been completed and it is particularly important to remember that students will have to pass the OLNA in order to achieve their WACE. We have in place support programs and specialist teachers to work with those students requiring support.
Even though we have had a reasonably good start to the year, it is imperative for all Year 12 students to be mindful of information gained during incursions/excursions, ensure all assessments/assignments are handed in on time and that students are putting in the necessary effort and study time to give themselves every chance to succeed.

Happy holidays and please be safe.
Sharon Andrews
Program Coordinator
Year 11 is a bit like a marathon, you need to pace yourself, manage your time appropriately and not go at full speed otherwise you are at risk of burn out. With the holidays just days away, it is the perfect time to take a bit of break and get back on track with those good habits. Check in with yourself and ensure you look after both your mental and physical health. Take some time to get organised and prepare yourself for Term 2 which will help to reduce your stress as you approach first semester exams.
I would like also like to congratulate our Year 11 students who represented our school at the Interschool Swimming Carnival and thank the Student Leadership team for their help and support during Harmony Week. It was a huge success celebrating the amazing cultural diversity we have at school.
Lastly, just a reminder, if you need any support in navigating Year 11 please do not hesitate to get in contact. Have a safe and restful holidays.
Our students have truly hit-the-ground running this year. Year 10 is an important year of academic growth and decision making. Pathway discussions have taken place with Mr Stott kindly coordinating our first information session to better help our Year 10 students into their desired pathway and outcome. This information is also found on our shared Connect page ‘Yr. 10 Cohort 2021’ in the ‘Library’ folder.
We had a number of events at the school such as The World’s Greatest Shave and Harmony Week which promote mental health awareness and cultural diversity. These events communicate the importance of positive mental health and prevention strategies for anxiety and stress. We would like any student to visit Student Services, the Nurse or the School Chaplain (by appointment) if they need assistance throughout the year.
As our students are now in senior school we would like them to set the standard for middle school students and be accountable for their uniform and of course keeping their devices such as mobile phones switched off and away when they enter the school.
Thank you to all parents and students who took part in the survey regarding this year’s Dinner Dance on 9 December. It is always important for parents and students to have a voice in their education. We are currently in the process of confirming the venue and will be in-touch shortly.
Please contact me if you need any assistance or Student Services throughout the year.
Kind regards,
Ashley Meaden

Primary School Visits
I have started to attend some of our local primary schools and speak to the Year 6 students about our Special Programs. Please note that the closing date for applications is the Tuesday 27 April so if you know someone who may be interested in applying for one of them, then please direct them to our website for more information.
Student Planner
As a reminder, can you please ensure that your students have their Student Planner and are using it. A great way to check is to write a note in it and have them get the teachers to sign it. This is a great communication tool and also helps to develop those planning skills which are becoming more vital in an ever changing employment market.
Cybersafety
I have been fielding some questions on Cybersafety lately so I want to remind you about the Office of the eSafety . This is a wonderful resource for all ages and discusses very real examples of how to keep your child safe in an Online world.
Mentor Teachers
One of the greatest resources at school are our amazing staff and especially the work they carry out bwith their mentor class. The Mentor Teacher is a major part of our Pastoral Care system here at KSHS and so I would encourage you to make contact with your child’s mentor teacher as they work with them on their journey through high school.

Attendance
If your child is going to be absent from school or has been absent then please contact our Absentee Officer, Colleen Hockley. Students who miss school place themselves at educational risk and for prolonged authorised absences there may be something that we can do to ensure that the impact on learning is lessened. When you send in your absence we also need to know the reason. Saying your child is at home is not an explanation. Saying they are at “home sick” is acceptable but failing to provide a valid reason means they will be marked as an unexplained absence. If you have any questions, then please contact Colleen Hockley on 9293 6409.
Year 8 Bibbulmun Challenge
Hooray! It’s back on. Our tradition of taking our Year 8s out into the wonderful Community and seeing what is just at our back door. We take each Year 8 mentor class about 11km (by bus) from Kalamunda and we then pick up the Bibbulmun Track and walk back to school. It is a great day that really builds resilience and a wonderful sense of accomplishment. I have included the timetable below and notes will come out about two weeks prior to the day.

Deputy Principal Student Services/Middle School
As we near the close of Term 1 it is a great time for your child to reflect on how they have started the year off. As Year 9 is the final year of Middle School, it is an important time to build strong study habits.
- Are my worksheets and class notes organised?
- Am I up to date with all of my class work?
- Have I completed all homework tasks?
- Have I submitted all tasks on time this term?
- What do I want to improve on?
- How will I do that?
- What is worrying me?
- Who can help me with that?
I will continue to use the Year 9 Connect page as a means of communication with all Year 9s and their parent/guardians.
Have a safe and fun Easter holidays!
Lea Richards
Year 9 Coordinator
We are nearly at the end of our first term together as a Year 8 cohort and team. Well done to all of our Year 8 students who have been working hard throughout this short term. Parent teacher interviews are coming up in Week 9 which will be an opportunity for you to monitor your child’s current progress, and set future academic goals. We have the Bibbulmun Challenge beginning Week 9 of this term and flowing into Term 2. This is a 11km walk along the iconic and stunning Bibbulmun track and a time to build respectful relationships and demonstrate a sense of community and pride within ourselves. Full participation is encouraged.
The last couple of weeks have seen activities such as the Greatest Shave and Harmony week, where students either organised or participated in these events.
As the weather will be cooler on our return to school in Term 2 can I give a reminder about uniform. Only correct school uniform can be worn and this particularly applies to jumpers.
I look forward to a productive and even more rewarding Term 2. Have a relaxing, safe and happy Easter break.

Year 7 students experienced their first Swimming Carnival as a whole cohort. On the day, all Year 7 students were given the opportunity to take part in events including the novelties. Students who took part should be very proud of their achievements on the day. We were impressed by the number of students who volunteered to represent their house and the support house groups provided to swimmers.
The Year 7 students were also involved in the Water Corporation’s Waterwise Experience this term. This incursion aimed at enriching student learning in the Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum being taught in class. Students wore headphones in a silent disco-style activity where they rotated through different tents which held a number of informational activities relating to the importance of water. Students were highly engaged and enjoyed this experience immensely.
Many students have already been involved in Harmony Week activities, the Greatest Shave, Friday lunchtime games, Language clubs, Sports activities and a number of other activities the school has to offer. The Year 7 cohort have already made an impression on our school community and I hope to see them continue to engage in activities around the school.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION & TRAINING
WORK PLACE LEARNING – SEMESTER 1, 2021
ALL Year 11 and 12 students on a General/VET pathway are expected to participate in the school's Work Place Learning program.
An Authority-developed endorsed program (ADWPL), work place learning provides students with opportunities to immerse themselves in the world of work, meet employers, learn new skills and gain confidence when interacting with others.
Many opportunities for casual or full-time employment, traineeships and apprenticeships have resulted from students participating in work place learning.
The following dates are made available by the school, for students to be released from class and to attend Work Place Learning (in place of ATAR exams).
Please put these dates in your diary:
Work Place Learning DATES – Semester 1, 2021
YEAR 11 | YEAR 12 |
31 May – 11 June, 2021 | 31 May – 11 June, 2021 |
Students must also complete the WPL forms which were provided during Mentor, have them signed by parent/carer where indicated and return to the VET office with details for the company or business which has agreed to accepting the student for WPL over these dates. Whilst it may be appropriate for parents to call on behalf of the student, we strongly encourage students to make the first contact with the employer themselves – or ideally, pop in to the place of business and make an introduction in-person.
Additional forms are available from the VET office and these must be completed and returned by the end of Term 1.
Please contact Mrs Hamilton (VET Coordinator) or Mrs Rubery in the VET office with any questions.
Interhouse
March 5th saw yet another successful House Swimming Carnival at Kalamunda Water Park where students put on a phenomenal display of talent and sportsmanship in the pool. The Year 7s and competitors made their way on foot to the pool to participate in numerous competitive and novelty races. 2021 saw a record number of students signing up to participate which meant that more races could be swum and more students were participating and gaining points for their houses. Congratulations goes to the houses for their collective efforts and the individual achievements of the Champions and Runner Up Champions.
Interschool
From the results of the Interhouse Swimming Carnival, students were selected to represent the school at the School Sport WA ‘B’ division carnival at HBF stadium
on the 18 March. Again, students made a phenomenal effort against some tough competition and finished in 7th position overall. Drew Mann (Year 12) and Megan Schwinkowski (Year 8) won Champions for their year groups. A special mention to Drew Mann and Hayden Schwinkowski who have both been champion swimmers for Kalamunda SHS since 2016 and will be missed as they graduate this year. Their commitment to representing the school over the years has been outstanding.

Do you know why 14 March is a special day? It is international Pi day! Pi is an irrational number that is pivotal in Mathematics as it is used when dealing with all things circular. How many digits can you recite?
π = 3.141592653589793238462643383279502884197169399375105820974944 …
By now, you should be able to see some results for the assessments undertaken in Term 1 and many of you will have taken the opportunity to attend parent-teacher interviews. Please keep in mind that assessment results can be accessed through Connect at any time and teachers will be sending notices when new results have been uploaded.
If you are looking for something to engage your child’s mind over the Easter break, don’t forget that all students have access to Mathspace. A bit of revision on the holidays may help them to start Term 2 with confidence.

The 2021 Reading Challenge is off to a wonderful start with students across Year 7 to 9 actively posting their book reviews. It has been wonderful to see the variety of genres being explored by students in the early days of the Challenge. A number of students have been highly engaged and I would like to congratulate the following students for their stand-out contributions to our online community so far:
- Will Guy;
- Kate Jozus- Leitan;
- Audrey Coetzee;
- Jasmine Barton; and
- Charlotte Lee Steere.
Announcing our Reading Challenge Student Mentors
To support our Middle School students in 2021, we have selected five Year 10 students to act as mentors to their peers over the course of the Reading Challenge. Congratulations to Alex Tickner, Enya Matthews, Sharlini Hollier, Alison Scott and Áine Cunningham on being selected for this role! It has been fantastic to already see the level of encouragement being provided to students and the energy our mentors are bringing to the Reading Challenge.

Languages students celebrate Harmony Week at Kalamunda SHS
Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.
Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
What happened in Italian classes this week?
- Students learnt about the historical significance of Kings Park. Prior to European settlement and exploration Mount Eliza was known as Mooro Katta and Kaarta Gar-up, the Aboriginal names given by the Nyoongar inhabitants. Students also learnt the following Noongar terms: Birrit (Perth), Nyitting (Creation Time), Djildjit (fish), Kaarta (Hill), Garrup (spider or crab), Waugal (Rainbow Serpent) and Derbil Yerrigan (Swan River).
- In Italian club we listened to music that is currently on the T
op 40 Charts Italy. Francesca our language assistant made fresh traditional bruschetta. - Students listened to National Anthems or Hymns from around the world
- Flag of the European Union quiz
- Significance of the Di Chiera Brothers who opened up the very first European food shop in Northbridge. It was because of these Italian migrants broccoli, olive oil and the continental roll ended up on our plates!
- International Food Stall
- Harmony Week window messages
- Students celebrated the anniversary of the Unification of Italy (Italian: Anniversario dell'Unità d'Italia) is a national day that falls annually on 17 March and celebrates the birth of the modern Italian state, which took place following the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on 17 March 1861.
- National Closing the Gap Day-The main aim of National Close the Gap Day is to make people from both indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds aware of this problem and work towards finding ways to solve it.
Maria Pennington
Teacher in Charge of Languages
The Japanese Club has finally started up again, thanks to Mami-sensei. Japanese Club is to learn about and experience traditional Japanese culture and language. Every second week, due to popular demand, we also hold Anime Club, where our anime-niacs get together and watch and discuss anime. Japanese Club and Anime Club is held on Thursday lunchtimes in L3.
Harmony Week was also a great event for the Japanese program this year! Not only was the whole school able to see the very talented Taiko troupe (organised by Lauren Johnson) but Mami Hibino, our very own Japanese Language Assistant, played her sanshin and did an eisa dance (a traditional Okinawan dance). She is a fabulous performer and it was so great to see the students enjoying such an authentic cultural experience. She was also joined on the sanshin by her Host Mother and one of the organisers of the Perth Sanshin Club, Lyndie. Just another positive outcome created through the Department of Education’s incredibly valuable Assistant Language Teacher program!

When you have momentum, you can fly through things. When it goes missing, everything feels like an uphill slog. It is at those times that we tend to put things off until later and sometimes try to forget about them entirely. To stop procrastinating, we need to kick-start our momentum. Before doing that we need to understand what is happening to our brain.
Meet Rex
The lower, primitive part of our brain contains 80% of our brain cells. Despite this, it is fairly basic and mainly focuses on keeping us safe and comfortable. It is pretty much the same brain that dinosaurs had. Given its similarities let’s call that part of our brain, Rex (after Tyrannosaurus Rex*).
Meet Albert, Albertina and Alberta
The smarter, more developed part of the brain we could call our pre-frontal cortex but it is kind of cooler to call it our inner Albert/ Albertina/ Alberta after Albert Einstein.
Kick-starting Momentum
Kick-starting our momentum begins with calming Rex. Rex pays attention to what we do, not what we say. Once we start doing something, Rex often goes along with it. This is why the hardest part of a workout is just getting there to start it.
Build from Your Learning Strengths
When we start doing something we find we can do easily, our momentum increases. We get ‘on a roll’ and can sidestep procrastination. By assessing your learning strengths at www.mylearningstrengths.com you can know where to start. Obtaining the full Personalised Learning Success Plan moves you into action and beyond procrastination.
Spatial Reasoning
If your top learning strength is spatial reasoning, you often find it easiest to start by thinking in pictures. You may like to begin by drawing your ideas. Creating a flow chart, concept map or just doodling your thoughts will get you into action.
Perceptual – Motor Skills
If your top learning strength is perceptual- motor skills, you are likely to be an active person who likes doing things. Don’t just sit there waiting for inspiration to inspire you (you could be waiting a long time). Get moving & get doing. Walk it out, pace it out, step through your main plans.
Concentration and Memory
Your learning strengths in concentration can be a great advantage but they can also be an obstacle. You can get so focused on the things that you like doing (such as playing computer games or mucking around) that you forget to complete what you need to get done. One way to use your concentration & memory skills is to work out the main thing that you need to do & then work out the first thing you need to do. Remove all other distractions and just start by doing ten minutes.
Planning and Sequencing
Time to put those great planning strengths into action. This is the time to ‘imagine forward & plan backwards’. Define a goal or outcome you want & then outline in sequence the steps needed to create that result. You may find that you plan more easily by using post-it notes for each of the steps.
Thinking and Logic
Sometimes having great thinking skills can get in the way of doing things. It is likely that you have been weighing up the pros & cons of getting into action. Sometimes this can make us less certain & more worried than we need to be. Stop evaluating & predicting (great skills but you don’t need them now). Do the easiest thing that you can; to begin with.
People Smarts
You are tuned into people. If you can, ask someone to work with you on a project. Combining socialising while getting things done makes it much easier to start. As you are a sensitive person, you will probably worry that you are burdening the other person. You might be surprised to discover that you end up helping someone overcome procrastination while helping yourself.
Language and Word Smarts
Tell yourself a story of what will happen if you can get started & make this happen. Imagine the task is already completed & you are telling someone else about the payoffs & benefits.
Number Smarts
Create a to-do or a numbered checklist. Negotiate with yourself that you can only do something you like once you have ticked off and completed one of the items on your list.
*Oliver Emberton originally introduced me to Rex and Albert and I am eternally grateful.
