Thank you to Helping Hands and welcome to Kids United OSHC
As you would be aware, from letters sent home, the NSW Department of Education conducted a selection process for the new Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) lease. Kids United OSHC was the successful tender and will be commencing operations on Monday 27th May.
Families MUST enrol their children with Kids United even if their children are currently enrolled at Helping Hands. Kids United will be unable to care for any students out of school hours if they haven’t specifically been enrolled with Kids United. We will be sending home reminders about enrolment throughout the remainder of this term and at the beginning of Term 2. KIds United have decided to waive the enrolment fee for 2024. They will refund any family who has already paid the enrolment fee.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Helping Hands for their out of school hours care of MAPS students. I know families have appreciated having an OSHC on site where they know their children have been safely cared for by Helping Hands. I wish the staff of Helping Hands all the very best for the future and I wholeheartedly thank each and every one of the educators for their care of your children and our students.
Celebration of Learning Assembly, picnic lunch, open classrooms and police forum on social media
On Tuesday, 9th April, we are having a Celebration of Learning assembly which has been previously advertised on our calendar.
The assembly will be followed by a picnic lunch in the playground then, after lunch, open classrooms from 11.25am-12.00pm. At 12.00pm, we will be conducting a parent forum with Police Youth Liaison officers. They will be talking about managing social media and your children. I’m sure many of you have questions about navigating this sometimes challenging area. There will be an opportunity for families to ask questions.
Easter Hat Parade
On Wednesday the 27th of March we held our annual K-2 Easter Hat Parade. It was great to see all of the wonderful hat designs our students helped to create! A big thank you to staff who helped to coordinate the event, led by Mrs Payne.
At the parade, we also held the draw for our Year 6 Easter Raffle where we raised $1580. Thank you to our community for supporting this fundraising initiative.
A special thank you to our P&C for sourcing some chocolate eggs and easter items which were used as a special gift for our K-2 students, as well as prizes for our raffle.
Happy Easter to all who celebrate!
GRIP Leadership Day
The Year 6 student leadership team had the privilege of attending the GRIP Leadership Conference on Tuesday the 26th of March. Throughout the day, our leaders engaged in numerous workshops and activities to deepen their understanding of leadership, network with leaders from other schools, and consider ways in which they can utilise their leadership skills in a school environment. It was fantastic to see our leaders actively participating in all of the workshops and working together to discuss initiatives that they could trial within our school.
African Beat Incursion - Thursday 11th of April (no cost)
On Thursday the 11th of April, our school will have a visit from African Beat, a musical incursion provider. All students are able to attend and there is NO cost associated with this event. We are looking forward to a wonderful incursion to finish up the school term!
ANZAC Day March
This year, Mount Annan Public School will be participating in the annual Anzac Day Parade and Commemorative Service at Camden. Students are invited to represent our school and join the community in honouring the bravery and sacrifice of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and of all who served their country in time of war.
Students representing our school in the parade will meet Mount Annan PS teachers (look for Miss Kehlet and Mrs McPhee) on Elizabeth Street (at the front of Camden Tyre Service), Camden at 10.00am on Thursday 25th April 2024. All participants must wear their full school uniform on the day.
Please be aware that supervision of students will only be provided by staff during the actual parade. Supervision before and immediately following the parade will be the responsibility of parents/carers. The march concludes at the Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park. Parents/carers must collect their child/children from the carpark behind the service and where the march ends (behind Camden Sports Club) at approximately 11am. If families wish to stay for the ANZAC service, this will commence nearby at 11.15am.
If you’re interested, please see the note that has been sent via sZapp and Sentral and return it to the front office by Wednesday the 10th of April. Physical copies of the note are also available from the office if you are unable to print at home.
We do hope as many MAPS students as possible will attend this special march and service.
ANZAC Day School Service
We will be holding our ANZAC Day school service on Friday the 12th of April at 8.45am, led by the Student Leadership Team. We invite parents/carers to join us for this service.
Change of address or phone number
It is very important that we have up to date contact details for you should we need to contact you. Please send an email to the school (mountanna-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au) if you have changed your contact details. Please also include emergency contact details of people you have authorised to collect your child/children if you are unavailable (name, phone number and relationship to child). Emergency contacts cannot be the parents of your child.
Class Leaders
Congratulations to our class leaders who were elected by their peers. These students were all presented with their badges at a special morning assembly in Week 6. We know they will all do a wonderful job of representing their class at regular student leader meetings.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN online was finalised on Monday 25th March. We will inform you when results are sent to the school.
New Communication and Online Payment System
SENTRAL FINANCE IS LIVE!!!
If you have not signed up to the Parent Portal, please do so NOW. All payments must be made through the Parent Portal. The Make a Payment link on the school website will now redirect you to the Parent Portal.
Please note SZapp will be terminated at the end of this term. All communication will then be via the Parent Portal only. So to keep up to date with all school information and events, please make sure you have signed up to the Parent Portal. Your family access key was sent home earlier this term on a purple note. If you are unable to locate this note, please contact the office and we will reproduce this note.
Communicating with Staff
Recently, the department has communicated with all schools around the importance of staff ‘switching off’ outside working hours. We thank you, our community, for already being respectful of teachers’ time outside of work.
It is absolutely essential that we maintain strong communication with our families either by phone, email and/or face to face meetings. Communication between our school and our community is critical for us to partner together. This communication is in the best interests of your child or children and we encourage you to make appointments with teachers, executive and/or the principal at any time throughout the year to discuss issues relating to your child/children.
To give our teachers the opportunity to recharge, spend time with their families and bring their best creative selves to work, we (the NSW Department of Education) are setting clear expectations for when and how they respond to communication outside school operating hours. This means teachers may not reply to non-emergency messages or emails outside of school operating hours.
Please continue to use the school’s email address in the first instance mountannan-p@school.det.nsw.edu.au.
We know it’s often easier to send emails or messages after work. We will make sure we read and respond in school operating hours. Our staff will respond to your queries within 2 school days under normal circumstances. This, of course, may change if a teacher is absent from school.
Thank you for always treating our staff with kindness and respect.

Annual Report for 2023 and Strategic Improvement Plan 2024-2027
In accordance with department policy, the 2023 Annual Report will be published on our school website before the beginning of Term 2. Please have a read of our achievements in 2023.
As part of our evaluation of our Strategic Plan in 2023 and the outcomes of our External Validation (comprising our situational analysis), along with directions determined by the NSW Department of Education, we have been working on formulating our 2024-2027 Strategic Implementation Plan. This plan will also be published on our website in Term 2.
Strategic Improvement Plans (SIPs) are a key part of our (NSW Department of Education) shared commitment that every student learns, grows and belongs in an outstanding and equitable education system.
Our vision for MAPs remains relatively unchanged as we believe it complements the directions of the NSW Department of Education.
At Mount Annan Public School, our vision is to Engage, Encourage, and Excel. We are committed to fostering academic excellence through innovative teaching methods that inspire active participation and a love for learning. Our aim is to build strong foundations for success, empowering every student to reach their full potential and excel in their endeavours.
We strive to cultivate a positive and connected learning community where respect, kindness, and inclusion are at the core of everything we do. Through our dedication to diversity, we support the holistic development of our students, nurturing their social, emotional, and physical well-being. Our vision is to create an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and motivated to achieve their personal best, setting them on a path towards lifelong learning and success.
Our three strategic directions are:
- Student Growth and Attainment
- Positive Student Wellbeing
- Curriculum Implementation and Collaboration
Each of these strategic directions, though individually developed, are intricately connected to enhance our students' learning experiences and maximise educational outcomes.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Term 1 break.
School returns for teachers on Monday, 29th April. This is a School Development Day.
Students return to school on Tuesday, 30th April.
Warm regards

What’s happening in…
The Support Unit
What a term this has been for our wonderful Support Unit students. We are proud of each individuals hard work and achievements to start this year off.
K6C has seamlessly settled into our class routines this term. We've laughed, we've played, we've learnt and we've read lots of books together. K6C are building friendships and establishing strong foundations. We can't wait to see what the year has ahead for us!
K6G students are continuing to work consistently and successfully. This term, we are learning about Rainforests. Students have engaged in activities looking at where rainforests are located in the world, the climate of a rainforest (including a Rainforest in a Jar experiment) and the layers of a rainforest. To conclude this learning sequence, K-6G students visited Illawarra Fly Adventures, where they walked along the forest floor, through the canopy and climbed to the emergent trees. Students have also learned about different animals that live in rainforests.
K/6K have had a wonderful start to 2024! The students have been learning all about patterns and measurement and are enjoying hands-on tasks to cement their learning in this area. All students have been working hard with their reading and code-breaking strategies. Zing active has been a lot of fun this term and the students love integrating with their peers during this time. We are looking forward to more wonderful learning inTerm 2.
K6R have worked hard this term, completing units in English on narrative and argument and authority. Students have published their own stories as well as put forward strong arguments for conservation. In Science we have been learning about the physical world and forces. We can’t wait to keep up the fantastic work in Term 2!
Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
Congratulations to all students for completing their first term of Kindergarten! This term everyone has worked hard on learning letters and the sounds they make and developing their understanding of reading and writing. They have learned about representing numbers, sorting objects and making patterns. We celebrated the students who were selected as class leaders and those who have received awards. Now that they have completed their first term, they should feel super proud and excited to keep on learning even more! The students are tired from an eventful first term and deserve a well earned break. Keep safe and enjoy the holidays!
Along with most schools around the country, our school will be participating in the sixth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)
The AEDC helps keep our kids on-track by measuring their development across five key areas when they start their first year of full-time school. Find out how the AEDC can benefit your children’s future and your community: www.aedc.gov.au/schools/school-stories
We are training kindergarten teachers to complete the upcoming 2024 Australian Early Development Census for children in their classes, which will start in May this year.
The AEDC results help to identify the things that are influencing early childhood development and create positive change.
Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2)
We have had a very busy first term in Stage 1. Students have settled into their classes.
Students have been creating informative texts over the past few weeks. The focus has been on creating compound and complex sentences to provide more detail in their writing. They have also been working on measurement such as volume, area, length. Everyone should have all received their login details for Studyladder and Wushka. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
We look forward to having you join us during our Open Classrooms on Tuesday 9th April.
Stage 2 (Year 3 & 4)
Well done to all Stage 2 students completing their first term. All classes have settled into their classroom routines. Thank you to all parents who came along to our Meet the Teacher information afternoon in Week 5. It was a great opportunity to meet your child's classroom teacher and visit their learning environment. Year 4 camp notes have gone home, we look forward to sharing this exciting experience with the students. Year 3 excursion notes have also gone home, students will have a wonderful time at Taronga Zoo.
PSSA trials have begun and coaches will be selecting their teams soon. This is a great opportunity for Year 3’s to get involved and be part of a team to represent Mount Annan Public school.
Wishing you all a safe and restful holiday.
Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6)
All Stage 3 teachers have reported how pleased they are with their classes and how they are progressing at this early stage of the year.
Thank you to parents who attended our Meet The Teacher meeting in week 5. We appreciated your time and interaction during the early part of the year. Homework will start from now, with the Study Ladder online learning option as well as class tasks as prescribed by your child’s classroom teacher.
Camp notes will go home soon. A small deposit will secure your child’s place at camp.
Year 6 shirts have been ordered and we look forward to wearing them in Term 2.

Attendance Matters
Reminders for the end of Term
As we head into the end of Term 1, it remains important that your child attends school every single day. Being at school is the best place for students to learn as well as to keep social connections and build life-long skills.
We understand that families are eager to see and reconnect with loved ones and take a well-deserved break, but please remember that planned travel should only be taken during scheduled school holidays.
Students should be at school every day during school terms, including until the end of term, unless they are sick or are absent for a justified reason.
Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child's learning and wellbeing. When your child misses one day per fortnight, that's 4 weeks of missed learning in one year. Over an entire school journey this adds up to 1 year of lost learning.
Unexplained Absences
Please remember that the NSW Education Act requires that all student absences must be explained within 7 days of the first day of them being away from school. Please contact us promptly whenever your child is absent and let us know the reason for them being away. Our preferred method is to respond to the text message, you can also contact the school via letter, phone or email. This allows us to provide the right support and make sure your child's absences are recorded correctly.
In the event your child has repeated or ongoing unexplained absences, we will continue to try to contact you about each absence to provide appropriate support for you and your family.
We know that for our students every day of school matters.

Wellbeing Information for Parents and Carers
At Mount Annan Public School we are committed to creating a positive and happy learning environment for all students. In order to do this, working with our broader community, particularly carers and parents, is vitally important. Please find below some simple actions that parents and carers can take to help minimise bullying and promote a positive school environment.
(Source:https://thebullyproject.com.au/parents/)
- Talk with and listen to your kids—everyday.
Research shows that adults are often the last to know when children are bullied or bully others. You can encourage your children to buck that trend by engaging in frequent conversations about their social lives. Spend a few minutes every day asking open ended questions about who they spend time with at school and in the neighborhood, what they do in between classes and at recess, who they have lunch with, or what happens on the way to and from school. If your children feel comfortable talking to you about their peers before they’re involved in a bullying event, they’ll be much more likely to get you involved after.
- Be a good example of kindness and leadership.
Your kids learn a lot about power relationships from watching you. When you get angry at a waiter, a sales clerk, another driver on the road, or even your child, you have a great opportunity to model effective communication techniques. Don’t blow it by blowing your top! Any time you speak to another person in a mean or abusive way, you’re teaching your child that bullying is OK.
- Teach your child how to be a good witness or positive bystander.
Research shows that kids who witness bullying feel powerless and seldom intervene. However, kids who take action can have a powerful and positive effect on the situation. Although it’s never a child’s responsibility to put him or herself in danger, kids can often effectively diffuse a bullying situation by yelling “Stop! You’re bullying” or “Hey, that’s not cool.” Kids can also help each other by providing support to the victim, not giving extra attention to the bully, and/or reporting what they witnessed to an adult

Book Club
Book Club Issue 2 is out now! Last day to order will be Friday, 29 March 2024.
Library Borrowing
Library lessons are well under way and it is wonderful to see the enthusiasm that students have demonstrated for borrowing books on a regular basis. We remind students to bring a waterproof library bag on their class’s designated library day to carry borrowed books to and from school. The loan period is a maximum of 2 weeks, before it becomes overdue. We are always sourcing and adding new titles to our collections in the library and encourage regular borrowing.
Number of books allowed to be borrowed:
Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten): 1 book
Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2): 2 books
Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4): 3 books
Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6): 4 books
An important reminder that we have a very large amount of ebooks and audio books available online through our SORA app. Students can read these online, or choose the audio option where it is read to them. This is a great opportunity for your child to have access to novels and other books that they may otherwise not be able to read. If your child has not yet downloaded the SORA app, please follow the directions below.
(The number of ebooks and/or audio books borrowed on the SORA app does NOT count towards the borrowing limit of books borrowed from the library.)
Premier’s Reading Challenge
This year’s challenge has began and closes on 23rd August 2024. Students in K - 2 complete this challenge in class. Students in Years 3 - 6 need to complete their own reading log. This can be found in their Student Portal and most students now know how to add books to their log. If you have any questions in regards to this challenge, you are welcome to pop into the library before school and we can assist you and your child with their reading log entries.
