Industrial Action

Protected Industrial Action - Join us and win a better deal

Key links:

On May 1, 2023, VU NTEU members delivered our log of claims to management. One year later, after the NTEU bargaining team has done a vast amount of work preparing, researching and presenting the urgent need and rationalisations behind member’s important claims during negotiations with management. VU management has made no concessions on our reasonable demands for secure jobs, flexible work, and fair and safe workloads.

NTEU Members have given repeatedly given reasonable arguments for why these changes are necessary but management hasn’t agreed. It is therefore the bargaining team’s recommendation that management’s unwillingness to negotiate on key claims is unacceptable, leaving members with no option but to take protected industrial action.

Ongoing Protected Action - happening now!

Members will make statements while working explaining why members of NTEU are taking industrial action. This is a form of protected industrial action (Questions about industrial action? Get answers).
We especially encourage all teaching staff to share this information with their students and sessional teaching teams.
Download templates, slide decks, zoom backgrounds and more to assist you in taking this action from our comms pack (view it here).

Protected Actions - coming soon!

Final Friday 1B3 – Footscray Park Rally and online solidarity action, Friday 24 May
If VU management has not made significant progress to meeting our key claims by Fri 17 May, we are planning the following actions on Friday 24th May:

  • Academic staff: stop work from 9.00am - 11.00am; do not attend Final Friday meetings during this time. Rally at Footscray Park 10.00am.
  • Professional staff: ban of selected VU online systems from 11.00am - 12.00pm. Attend online rally 12.00pm – 12.30pm (during your lunch break).

Week 2 1B4 - Stop Teaching, Monday 3 - Friday 7 June
If we still can’t get a satisfactory agreement from management we will undertake significant protected industrial action from Monday 3 June to Friday 7 June that will stop the performance of teaching work by NTEU VU members. This will include a 24-hour strike on Wed 5 June for all NTEU members at VU.

VU Industrial Action plan: what members voted for on 22 April

On 22 April, VU NTEU members resolved to take the following actions:

  1. A direct action between 12pm to 1pm on Wednesday May 1, 2024, at Footscray Park and City Tower VU Campuses for the purpose of taking a Solidarity Photograph. Learn more here.
  2. That VU staff will make statements while working, explaining why members of the NTEU are taking industrial action from May 1, 2024, until the end of the current round of bargaining at Victoria University.
  3. That VU NTEU Branch will take action in the form of work bans and a rally between 11am and 1pm in the week beginning 20 May, if significant progress has not been achieved in EA Bargaining meetings by Friday 17 May, as determined by the NTEU Bargaining Team. NTEU academic members will not attend all or part of the Final Friday meetings in any College, and professional staff members will stop work or implement bans on specific VU online systems in their work area during these two hours. Public action to highlight the unsafe workloads prevalent throughout VU will be taken during this time.
  4. That if satisfactory in-principle agreement cannot be reached resolving all the Union’s claims by Friday 31 May, VU staff will undertake significant industrial action from Monday 3 June to Friday 7 June that will stop the performance of teaching work by NTEU VU members.

**Remember - only union members can take protected industrial action. Join now to participate.**
