Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
This week we received the sad news that Mr Rex Doutty a long-time member of our teaching staff passed away on the Saturday, 18 March. At this time, we keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers, especially his wife Pam, children Shane, Donna, Daniel and grandchildren.
Mr Doutty was a much-loved member of our community, a beautiful soul who dedicated his life to ‘Living by Giving’ through the education of our young over the past 50 years including as a teacher, and our first official WHS officer at St Clare’s.
Rex had real love of science, his passion in this area is best exemplified with Rex ‘s decision to donate his body to the science department at Macquarie University.
Rex will always be part of our community, not just in memory but also physically with the Big Umbrella that sits proudly in the senior yard. Rex was at the forefront in sourcing funding and research into shade structures that enabled the erection of this umbrella in 2006.
Please take the time to read a few comments from his fellow teachers:
Rex was always there to listen supportively to all staff and especially teachers. He brought a wealth of knowledge and wisdom from a great many years of teaching experience and shared professional literature with teachers. He cared deeply for the school community. He was adaptable and happy to teach in any subject area and was always happy to work with children with difficult circumstances.
Mr Jason Koenig
Rex was an uncommon man. Uncommon in the sense that he overcame extreme adversity as a child and was able as an adult to assimilate this struggle into a life filled with love and dedication to the needs and safety of family, friends and his community. Rex was a man that could be taken at his word and a man never to let you down. Rex was a rock of stability, a clear life choice in contrast to the tumultuous chaos of his youth. Life thrust many challenges on Rex that set his stone at an early age. A person is truly defined an adult when they can choose their own life path, and actively decide the type of person they want to be regardless of life’s adverse challenges. Rex chose education, peace, loyalty and acts of selfless service to the betterment of all children. Teaching seemed to fit the bill.
He told me once, in an all-in bar brawl in a Bankstown pub, early in the 1970’s, “Out of the entire pub, they arrested me. Just because I was the biggest, I wasn’t even in the fight.” He laughed as he said “the hardest part was explaining to his principal the next day why he couldn’t come to work.”
Rex clearly matured into teaching over a long career, two Masters Degrees later and a wealth of leadership experience, we knew Rex in the later winding down part of his long and distinguished career. Science, knowledge, children and community were always his passion. A deep thinker and a man always willing to share the latest research paper on a topic of discussion. A man of action not just words, a man of integrity, never willing to yield to any bully or any form of political injustice or intimidation. A true hero and role model to us all. Once Rex had made up his mind he was a powerhouse of energy and action. Calmly methodically grinding away until the goal was achieved. I respected Rex and I loved him as a colleague and as a man. He taught us all a lot about life and dignity in action. He taught me through his life to face the challenge head on, with everything you have. A life well lived, devoted husband and true model for kindness and strength in compassion. Until we meet again.
Mr Phil Chalmers
Rex, in his infinite kindness towards our school Rex donated copies of the Cambridge Ancient History. Rex also organised 2 full bags of Ancient Egyptian replica artefacts and books that were donated to the school, from a friend he knew. These are displayed in the Library and Room 7 and are a valuable source of interest to student, another valuable legacy Rex has left behind.
Mrs Eloise Thomas
It is hard when the time comes to say goodbye to a friend that is dear to our hearts, this especially is the case with Rex who showed us all how to walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, through both his actions and words. In saying goodbye, we pray the Blessing of St Clare.
May Almighty God Bless you
May he look upon you with the eyes
of Mercy and give you peace.
Here on earth may he pour forth
graces on you abundantly
and in heaven may he place you
among the saints
Rex’s Memorial Service will be on Friday, 12 May at 2 pm at the Tuncurry Bowling Club auditorium.
Relationships make the world go round and nearly everything we do and achieve in life will come from working with others.
At our school, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. One of the most important ways we do this is by fostering quality relationships between students, staff and parents.
Research has shown that positive relationships between teachers and students can have a significant impact on academic achievement, student engagement and classroom behaviour. Students who feel connected to their teachers are more likely to be motivated to learn, more likely to participate in class, and less likely to exhibit disruptive behaviour. Moreover, strong relationships between parents/carer’s and teachers can also benefit students.
We encourage our teachers to get to know their students on a personal level and to create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment. Our CLARE lessons conducted three times a week have a dual purpose. The first is to provide the opportunity for students to work though their wellbeing journals to build their wellbeing banks to draw on when confronted with life’s inevitable challenges, and an opportunity for teachers to get know the students through conversation and build quality and respectful relationships with the students under their care.
Creating quality relationships is not always easy, but it is worth the effort. There are many different dimensions to consider when trying to build the relationship or establish a rapport with another person. Our students’ brains, especially during adolescents, are not necessarily completely wired and therefore, need to be shown and taught how to build quality relationships.
Some of the personal attributes students need to learn and develop are:
- Living and learning collaboratively and in cooperation with others – learn from others.
- Living by giving – a core value of St Clare, St Mary MacKillop and our Catholic school.
- Focusing on mutual respect – everyone is special and celebrate diversity.
- Appreciating others and their thoughts – building connections with others.
- Being true to themselves, respecting themselves and showing the best of themselves.
- Building empathy for others, their feelings, needs, and views – being positively mindful.
- Positive communication - use positive language and avoiding negative comments or criticism.
- Listening with their eyes, their ears, and their heart.
The acquisition of these attributes will enable students to build healthy and respectful relationships with others. To learn how to mix with and accept people of all ages, differing cultures and backgrounds and in a variety of situations, including at school, home, work, and on social media formats.
At St Clare’s, we are committed to building quality relationships between students, staff, and parents. We believe that by doing so, we can create a positive, inclusive and connected school community where everyone feels valued and supported. Thank you for your support in this important endeavour.
‘Together with Christ we serve our community’.
Inspired by GOSPEL VALUES and the practical examples of St Mary of The Cross MacKillop and St Clare of Assisi our Mission is to…

Youth Mass
Our Youth Mass is every 2nd Sunday at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Albert St Taree. It is the usual 9:30 am Mass, however our young people take on all the different roles that parishioners usually carry out during a Mass. The kids play and sing the music for the Mass accompanied by Mrs Jenny McKendry, they read the Readings of the day and the Prayers of Intercession, they present the gifts for preparation at the altar, and of course they alter serve and assist Father Kevin.
We are always so happy to have the kids involved and taking on these important roles in the Mass, learning and carrying on the rituals and traditions. It makes the parishioners so happy to see them in the church and getting involved. Thanks to our students who are part of this regular team of helpers: Amalin Baijush, Aidan Joe Sheen, Leonel Senson, Cornell Estibeiro, Emily, Nicholas and Ailey Boere, Ava Doherty and Rufus Rowe.
Maybe this could be the Mass you commit to attending once a month with your family? I know it gets busy and Sundays are down time, but it truly is worthwhile. We are blessed to have such a great priest who is always so insightful and down-to-earth. Hearing God’s Word at the beginning of our week, listening to Father Kevin’s interpretation and how he connects the reading to today’s world is a great grounding way to start the week. It puts our busy lives into perspective and reminds us we are all children of God. Perhaps you can follow the Mass with a nice coffee or breakfast on the way home? We hope to see you there.
Our next Youth Mass is EASTER SUNDAY!!! The perfect day to come along and celebrate Christ’s Resurrection. Please see the dates below for other Holy Week Mass Times.

Year 7 had a brilliant time on camp with so many activities to improve their resilience and enhance their friendships. They supported each other as they faced the heights of the giant swing and leap of faith. Students also competed in laser tag, tested themselves on the BMX track, and navigated the high ropes course. They should be commended on the support they showed each other and willingness to embrace all the challenges and activities.
Thank you to Mr Todd Curtis (Leader of Wellbeing) for all your organisation and all the teachers who accompanied our students on camp. A big thank you to CCC Camps for hosting our students and encouraging them to always embrace challenges and work together to accomplish their goals.

During the term students investigated the problems associated with relying solely on archaeological sources. Students worked in groups to investigate the mysteries of the Nazca Lines and Plain of Jars and presented their research to the class. Students discovered understanding the past is best achieved where both archaeological and deciphered written material is available and the sources can be cross-referenced. In presenting their work Year 11 Ancient History students demonstrated an enthusiasm and willingness to participate in the activity, exhibiting their place as role models in the school community.
Year 11 Ancient History also enjoyed a little field work in Week 7. Students are completing a case study on Tutankhamun’s tomb. This fieldwork helps students study the archaeological remains of the tomb and leads to further investigation of the location of burial objects found in the tomb. Students looked at the dimensions and structure of the burial chamber and treasury by accurately measuring with trundle wheels. Our budding archaeologists now understand the scale of the tomb. Prior to the fieldwork, students worked in groups to make a digital presentation on artefacts from the tomb focusing on the roles the god and goddesses in the burial of the pharaoh and were able to locate the position of these objects in the Treasury.

Visit from Elder Aunty Isabelle Bungie
Last Wednesday Year 7 ATSI students were treated to a visit from Elder Aunty Isabelle Bungie. Students listened to stories from Isabelle's early life growing up in Purfleet and what it was like for her childhood and schooling in Taree. Year 7 found her stories interesting and relatable, and enjoyed her affable conversation. As the 2023 NAIDOC theme is For Our Elders this relationship is of particular importance.

NSWCCC Golf Selections 2023
On 14 March Rohan Dormor, Year 10 participated in the selection trials that were held at Waratah Golf Club. The event was abandoned halfway through the day due to heavy rainfall making the course unplayable. A paper selection had to take place where each student had their Handicap and previous 20 rounds reviewed via Golf Link. A team was then selected, and Rohan gained selection in the NSWCCC Golf Team for 2023. Congratulations, Rohan. He will now compete in the NSW All Schools Golf Championships to be held in June.

Careers Corner
On Wednesday, 5 April all Year 12 students should receive an email from UAC (The Universities Admissions Centre) with a PIN and login information on how to access and register with UAC. This is the main pathway into university from school. If any student does not receive this email, then it is important that they email or contact me so that I can help with access. Obviously if a student is definitely NOT interested in a university pathway, they do not need to register. It costs $80 to register before 30 September and $200 to register after this date. There is quite a bit of time to decide on preferences etc.
I will be going through this with the students on Friday, 24 March.
UAC PIN and Applying
Students must use their Year 12 student number (NESA Number) and UAC PIN to apply so that they can be identified as a Year 12 student. If students don’t use their student number when applying they will not appear on the school’s data spreadsheet available on “School Hub”.
Each student can put down five preferences. It is worth noting that not all university courses are available at this stage and more will become available as the year progresses.
If the students do NOT get an email, they need to contact UAC in one of the following ways:
UAC Contact Numbers
LifeChat and email through our website also continue to be available.
From a landline: 1300 275 822
From a mobile: 02 97520200
If they are still having difficulty, then please contact me preferably via email so that I can assist. I will be checking my emails at various times during the holidays.
It is imperative that ALL STUDENTS have access to their NESA information and records. This is where they can access their HSC timetables etc.
All Year 12 students have been emailed with relevant information regarding UAC. The information has also been placed in the Careers OneNote.
Students in Year 12 who might be considering careers in medicine or dentistry post school need to register for the “UCAT” (University Clinical Aptitude Test ANZ).

Early Entry for Year 12
The University of New England (UNE), and the Australian National University (ANU) are open for Year 12 students to apply for Early Entry without going through UAC. If you are interested, please go to the relevant university’s website and apply. If you would like some assistance, please email me.
I have placed more information in the Year 12 Careers Team OneNote. The first round of Early Entry for Charles Sturt University closes on 7 April and offers will come out in early May. The second round of offer applications will close on 30 June.
I have placed a flyer about Early Entry in the Careers Team OneNote courtesy of “Job Jump” and this has information about each university’s early entry process. I am happy to hand out a hard copy if this is preferred.
I would also like to remind the Year 12 students to keep working on their resumes and to make an appointment to have a meeting with me. Students can email me or write their names in a white space on the Timetable attached to my office door, and we can organise a time to do this. To date I have had several meetings with students. I am more than happy to talk to any student who would like some help with a resume or anything else relating to Careers.
As information comes to hand, I will email the relevant students and I will also be putting all information in their Careers OneNote. This will relate to apprenticeships, traineeships, job vacancies, university information and open days, TAFE information and scholarships. There is a tab in the Careers section titled Job Jump which has a great deal of up-to-date information. All the students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have, or will have, access to this.
On Friday, 17 March we had a Zoom call from Lori Modde (the CEO of Outdoors NSW & ACT) who shared information about career pathways through Outdoors NSW & ACT. The PowerPoint she shared with us is in the Careers Team OneNote in the Industry Presentations section, and is worth a look. There are many different options and pathways. Many thanks to Lori for this!
