School Resumes on Tuesday, 31 January 2023 for Years 7, 11 & 12
School Resumes on Wednesday, 1 February 2023 for Years 8, 9 & 10
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of St Clare’s
Welcome to St Clare’s final school newsletter for 2022.
The last weeks of Term 4 bring many opportunities and new beginnings into the life of the St Clare’s community. Senior students complete their studies and look to life outside school, parents and children transition from primary to secondary settings, and students move into new areas of choice and responsibility.
The recently held reflection days in Years 7 and 9 and the Year 10 social all mark significant emotional, spiritual, and physical development within individuals and their cohort. The growth and development of Year groups and their realisation that their wellbeing and mutual success is dependent on right relationships and the spiritual growth of each person, is a powerful learning that will serve each person throughout their lives.
Teamwork between parents, students and staff, which finds expression at Parent meetings, masses, award ceremonies, special projects like Heart to Heart and other celebrations ensure that these transition points are navigated successfully and in the best interest of the young people in our care. Such collaboration is a hallmark of Catholic education and recognises that each person is gifted, able to learn and touched by the hand of God.
A little further into this newsletter you will find a summary of the 2022 HSC results. I am very proud of the cohort and their teachers and parents for the way in which they have worked together to ensure great outcomes across a wide range of areas of study. We will update the community when post school careers are shared with staff at the school.
I would like to thank all members of the community, students, parents, and staff for their support over the course of the year and will be thinking of you all as I undertake leave in 2023.
I know you will support Mr Phillip Gibney in his role of St Clare’s Principal for the 2023 school year and wish the school executive of Theresa Avery, Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching, Marian Parvin Assistant Principal, Wellbeing, Jason Koenig Ministry Coordinator every success as they work and serve the school community across the year.
God Bless
Peter Nicholls
Principal

BYOD Devices Setup Instructions for 2023
St Clare’s High School operates a Bring Your Own Device laptop computer scheme (BYOD) and advice regarding suitable devices was distributed earlier in the year.
For the students’ devices to function successfully as part of our Diocesan network they need to be configured in a set manner.
Students MUST be an administrator on their own device. This is necessary for them to add subject specific software and add printers and interact with teachers.
Most new devices sold now come with a version of Windows 11 pre-loaded.
These devices now need to be setup with a non-student (school) email BEFORE they can then join the network in our Diocesan Schools. (This can be done for previous Windows versions also).
To assist parents in doing this, the Diocese has established a website with instructions to allow them to setup most of the laptop before school commences.
The website linked here has sets of instructions for each of the differing licenses for Microsoft Windows 11. Select the relevant set of instructions and follow them closely to setup you BYO Device.
We STRONGLY suggest a parent assist in this process to ensure ALL instructions are carried out correctly.
The Diocese has an education tenant of Microsoft365, that means there are additional educational tools that allow all teachers, K-12 students, and other staff to collaborate, create, communicate and store files, in an ad-free, reliable, secure and controlled virtual environment. All data is stored in Microsoft’s data centres in Australia, thus meeting Australian Privacy Principles.
As part of the Diocesan license with Microsoft, all students and employees can install the Office365 suite on up to FIVE devices by using their diocesan credentials.
Office365 can be loaded onto Windows laptops and desktop computers using an installer package from MNConnect (see instructions here). Tablets, smart-phones, and Macs the Office products are downloaded from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.
At St Clare’s High School, we also pay for a student licence for Adobe Creative Cloud.
The installation instructions for this software suite can be found at the link below.

ST CLARE’S HIGH SCHOOL – HSC RESULTS – 2022
Principal’s Comment:
“Congratulations to our HSC class of 2022 on their excellent results which are a fitting reflection of their efforts and dedication to their studies during two years of great upheaval and change. I particularly want to thank our students for their resilience and good humour throughout the year and our excellent staff for their diligence and sustained effort to deal creatively with the challenges COVID-19 has created in the educational environment. Congratulations also to parents and caregivers of St Clare’s who have supported the young people and the school so enthusiastically throughout the year. We are proud of our students, parents and staff and the St Clare’s tradition of achievement in the HSC, and excited for our young people as they begin the next phase of their lives.”
According to data from the Daily Telegraph (15 December), St Clare’s is the best ranking school overall in the local area and the highest ranking school in the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese in terms of ATARs and HSC results.
The 2022 HSC Examination results have, again, been very rewarding for St Clare’s High School students.
The cohort of 67 students were rewarded with 28 Band 6 and 86 Band 5 grades with outstanding results in:
- English Advanced
- Mathematics Extension 2
- Mathematics Advanced
- Studies of Religion 1
- Studies of Religion 2
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Personal Development & Physical Education
- Community & Family Studies
- Drama
- Visual Arts
- Music 1
- Industrial Technology
- Spanish Beginners
- French Beginners
Congratulations to Year 12 Drama (5 Band 6 and one Band 5), who have had their whole class nominated for OnSTAGE, a selection of exceptional performances from HSC Drama students.
Cassidy Donovan, Lucas Drury, Taj Simpson, Georgia Rourke, Cooper Twemlow and Medinah Well's Group Performance, "The Able Fable", was nominated, as well as Cooper, Taj and Georgia's Individual Performances. This is an outstanding achievement for these students!
Of the 67 students in the Class of 2022, many students received early offers to university, which they have already accepted, while other students have achieved results which will allow them to take up offers which will be made by universities in the coming weeks.
St Clare’s also saw a number of students accept Traineeships, Apprenticeships, TAFE pathways and employment opportunities. Students have also been accepted into the armed forces for a GAP year or permanent placement.
According to the limited contact the school has had with students today, the student who is our 2022 Dux is Taj Simpson with an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank of 96.90.

During Week 3 of Term 3, 68 of our enthusiastic and very talented young mathematicians competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition. Each of our mathematicians were challenged as they completed problem solving tasks with some questions common throughout the Year 7-10 papers. Congratulations to all participants. It is fantastic to see young individuals willing to challenge themselves further than what is provided in the classroom. The results are shown below; special congratulations must go to Oliver Collins who placed in the 97th percentile for Year 7/8 students.

High Distinction and Best in School - Oliver Collins, Year 7
On a personal note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, students, and parents for their support over the past four years. It has been an honour to lead the St Clare’s High School Mathematics faculty over this period. All the very best to all involved in future Mathematic endeavours.
Mark Fletcher
Leader of Learning Mathematics
St Clare’s would like to officially welcome a new addition to our community… our wellbeing puppy… and, as she was born during Advent, we have decided to name her Jesse, after the Jesse tree.
This tree has a special significance at this time of year as we prepare for Christmas. It helps us connect the custom of decorating Christmas trees to the events leading to Jesus’ birth. Each ornament hung on the tree symbolises people, prophesies and events leading up to the birth of Jesus and the practice brings families together to learn and celebrate this very special event on the Christian calendar.
At the beginning of next year, staff and students will begin the training program in preparation for Jesse’s entry to the school.
Stay tuned for updated stories and pictures.
What a lovely gift for our school for Christmas.

Year7, 8, & 9 Food Technology and Year 11 Hospitality have produced some amazing creations in the last few weeks.
They designed wedding, birthday, and cakes for special occasions.
Year 11 Hospitality students planned and prepared a high tea, which was served and judged by a selection of teachers. The students worked in groups of two and were given two hours block to prepare and serve and most importantly to work on teamwork and problem solving skills.
- assorted sandwiches;
- mini quiches;
- lemonade scones; and
- chocolate brownies.

A special thank you to all of those involved in supporting the program and coming to the Exhibition.

Recently Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Years 7 – 11 were treated to an enjoyable cultural activity in weaving with local Biripi artist Joedie Davis Lawler. Joedie is a Biripi Artist from the Mid North Coast and she has created art for the past thirty years. Her passion began as a young child when she would sit with her grandmother Aunty Faith Saunders, enjoying listening and watching how her grandmother loved to paint.
All students worked towards producing small baskets in various forms and colours.

The season of Advent relates to us preparing for the birth of Jesus. It revolves around hope, faith, peace and joy as we prepare for Christmas. With increased prices of food, electricity and rent many people in our community are in need. A group of Year 11 students, Georgia Capes, Connor Clarke, Harry Miller and Karma-Anne Van Der Merwe responded to the needs of these people by volunteering at the Community Kitchen. They are to be commended in the manner in which they conversed with these people, putting them at ease and reinforcing that the community of St Clare's cares for those in need. St Clare's students continue to be the face of Jesus in the community.

Lunchtime Football World Cup
Last Tuesday saw the completion of our lunchtime football World Cup. We had teams from Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands, England, Iran, USA, Wales, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Brazil, Serbia, Portugal and Cameroon. Students should be very proud of the spirit, skill and sportsmanship on display whilst participating in each game. Thank you to all supporters and referees during the tournament, for adding that little bit of extra atmosphere.
The knockout phase saw eight teams left standing: Ecuador, Mexico, Wales, Serbia, Cameroon, USA, Argentina and Senegal. All knockout matches were very closely contested, with one match even needing a penalty shootout to separate the two.
The final two teams were Argentina and Wales, with Argentina eventually taking the spoils 2-1 in another match that could have went either way. Could it be an omen for the FIFA World Cup final next Monday morning?

NSW Champion of Champions School Futsal Titles
Congratulations to our 19’s school Futsal team, who recently competed in the NSW Schools Champion of Champions Futsal Titles in Port Macquarie. Our team played with outstanding skill, competitiveness and sportsmanship throughout all their matches, going through the day undefeated!
All players were terrific throughout the day with dominating attacking performances and strong defence across all their pool matches, which resulted in comprehensive 8-0 and 4-2 victories over Melville High School and Camden Haven High School respectively. St Clare’s dominance continued with a 3-1 victory over Bellingen High School to finish on top of the table and book their place in the semi-finals.
St Clare’s faced off against Melville High School in their semi-final clash. They displayed outstanding attacking flare, which lead to numerous terrific team goals. St Clare’s finished with a comprehensive and emphatic 11-0 victory.
St Clare’s progressed to the final, where they came up against Camden Haven High School. Our team dominated ball possession, working over the Camden Haven defence to score two well-constructed team goals. St Clare’s peppered the Camden Haven goal with several chances glancing off the posts and the keeper making some brilliant saves. St Clare’s ended the match with a 2-0 victory and were crowned champions! Congratulations and well done.
Lastly, a big thank you to Mr Laurent Gonfond and to those parents who helped to coach and support our school Futsal team, their tireless efforts are very much appreciated by everyone involved, making events like this possible.

14’s Girls & Boys Rugby League 7’s
Congratulations to our 14’s girls and boy’s rugby league teams, who travelled up to Port Macquarie to compete in the NRL 7’s tournament on Thursday, 1 December. Both teams played with terrific skill, toughness and sportsmanship across the entire day with some excellent and highly entertaining rugby league played by all.
In what was a baptism of fire for our 14’s girls team, with many of the players experiencing the fast paced action of Rugby League 7’s for the first time, the girls played amazingly! St Clare’s dominated in defence and attack across all their pool matches with some terrific and skilful team tries scored.
The girls easily accounted for Melville 24-4 in their opening fixture and were equally as dominant in their clashes with Kempsey Adventist School and Camden Haven High School, coming away with comprehensive 16-0 and 24-4 victories respectively. St Clare’s class and skill was again on display in their fourth and final fixture, a hard fought and determined win over perennial heavy weights MacKillop College, 16-8. In what was an exciting and see sawing contest, St Clare’s displayed great defensive efforts under fatigue and athleticism and skill in attack to come away with the hard fought and well deserved victory.
The girls finished the day undefeated! This saw St Clare’s top the table and book a ticket in the final against arch nemesis MacKillop College. The game was a bruising end to end encounter with strong defence on display from both teams. St Clare’s clawed their way back from conceding two early tries to level the score at halftime, 8-8. Unfortunately, fatigue and ball handling errors late in the second half saw MacKillop cross for two tries to seal the match, 16-8.
Our 14’s boys team were strong and enterprising in their opening round fixture against Chatham High School. St Clare’s displayed great attacking flair and defensive grit to come away with a comprehensive 16-4 victory.
The boys played MacKillop College in their second match, in a hard fought and bruising encounter. St Clare’s opened the scoring with a run-away try, before adding a second try on the stroke of half time to take an 8-0 lead. Costly defensive errors late in the second half saw MacKillop capitalise to score three consecutive tries, the last on the fulltime siren to take the match 12-8.
St Clare’s third and final fixture was against Hastings Secondary College. The boys dominated early to again take an 8-0 lead, before Hastings scored a well-structured team try to get themselves on the scoreboard. St Clare’s sealed the match with a try in the closing moments of the game to come away 12-4 winners.
The boys qualified for the semi-finals by finishing second in their pool, where powerhouse Taree High awaited them. St Clare’s stunned Taree High with a try in the opening minutes of the match. However, Taree High were able to claw their way back to take the lead 8-4 early in the second half. St Clare’s fought hard and came close to levelling the score in the dying stages of the match, however some desperate scrambling defence from Taree High saw multiple attacking raids from St Clare’s stopped, with Taree taking the match 8-4.
Lastly, a big thank you to Mrs Parvin as well as those parents who contributed their time and dedication in training, coaching and supporting our teams, without their outstanding and tireless efforts events such as this would not be possible.

The final edition for 2022- Wow! Where did that go?
Year 12 2022 graduates will have access to their school email until the start of February 2023, it would be great if you could please check your emails from time to time.
From UAC
ATAR release 2022
ATARs were released at 9 am on Thursday, 15 December 2022.
December Round 2, on Thursday 22 December, is the first offer round for Year 12 students based on ATARs.
The change of preference deadline for December Round 2 is 11.59pm on Friday, 16 December.
How?
Students access their ATAR by logging in via UAC's website. They'll need their NESA Year 12 student number and UAC PIN to log in.
When students view their ATAR, they can download their official ATAR Advice Notice. It's free until Sunday, 12 March 2023: after this date they’ll need to buy it from the UAC Shop.
This year students will also be able to access and store their ATAR in a digital wallet, CredFolio, as part of UAC’s new digital credential platform. More information and registration details will be sent to students soon.
ATAR Enquiry Centre
The ATAR Enquiry Centre – 9119 5012 – will be open on the following days for students who have queries about the calculation of their ATAR:
- Thursday, 15 December – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm
- Friday, 16 December – 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
- Saturday, 17 December - Closed
- Sunday, 18 December - Closed
- Monday, 19 December – 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
- Tuesday, 20 December – 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Student numbers and PINs
If students have forgotten their Year 12 student number, they should contact NESA/ACTBSSS or their school. If they’ve forgotten their UAC PIN, they should call UAC Customer Service on (02) 9752 0200, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday – they'll need their NESA/BSSS student number.
Students who have applied through UAC can reset their UAC PIN using the link on the application login page.
We don't reply to email requests for login details as we need to identify the sender before giving out this information.
Locking in preferences
Once students receive their ATAR they should log in to their application and review their preferences. They can only receive one offer in each offer round and unis will consider their course preferences according to the order in which they list them.
UAC advises students to put their dream course first. Even if their ATAR isn’t what they’re hoping for, it’s good to leave their first preference in place because lowest selection ranks change from year to year.
We also advise students to research the full range of courses in the field that they’re hoping to study. If they find courses that have previously had lower selection ranks than their dream course, they can add them to the bottom of their list of preferences. This way, if they miss out on their dream course, they'll have a good chance of getting an offer to something similar.
Offers
The most important offer rounds for Year 12 students are:
- December Round 2 – Thursday, 22 December (first offer round for Year 12 students based on ATARs)
- January Round 1 – Thursday, 12 January 2023 (offers based on ATARs and IB results)
Live Information Session
UAC is running a live Facebook and Insta session for students at 5:30 pm on Wednesday 14 December. UAC's General Manager, Marketing and Engagement, Kim Paino, will be talking about what students should do when the ATAR comes out, how to order their preferences, and what to do when they receive – or don’t receive – an offer. Questions can be posted beforehand in the comments or send a DM.
Dux Assembly
On 8 February we are holding our Dux Assembly. Former Year 12 students are welcome to attend and discuss their experiences with the Year 11 & 12 students. Obviously, many of you are moving away, but if you’re local at the time, GREAT!
Thanks to Mr Curtis for doing such an excellent job with this cohort. I am looking forward to finding out what pathways they will pursue post school. I am more than happy to assist whenever possible so please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any help.
The Year 12 Graduation was excellent – Congratulations, Year 12, on completing your schooling!
Work Experience
Work Experience is now back in full swing and if you are interested in this, you will need to come and see me to collect the paperwork. I will keep you posted in early 2023 and I will have the paperwork ready to go.
