A Note from the Principal
Term 4 2019, has again proved to be extremely busy and productive time of year for students, parents and staff.
In the recent weeks our school community has taken great pride in saying farewell to our 131 amazing Year 12 students as they leave us to enter the next important phase in their lives. Thornlie SHS is very proud of the part we have played in their schooling years, and we wish them well as they head off to employment, TAFE and University.
This year’s celebrations commenced with the Year 12 Dress Up Day, Morning Tea and the Feel Festival, organised by Year 12 Big Picture Student, Beth Culling. It was obvious that the students had spent considerable time planning and organising their costumes as they all looked fantastic.
Then on Friday 21st October the Year 12s and staff enjoyed a buffet breakfast in Gosnells that was followed by a moving Farewell Assembly. This was the final time our school could acknowledge the achievements of this unique group of students and give them the opportunity to reflect on their 5-year journey at Thornlie SHS.
Mr Jason Barrow, Officer Edith Cowan University Cultural Awareness presented a very informative address on sharing knowledge and learning before he presented message sticks to Year 7 students Declan Dudley and Bilal Liddell.
The Year 12s thanked the dedicated teaching staff that had guided them along the way, their parents and family for their love and support and each other for the good times and memories. We also acknowledged Mrs Friedlos and Mrs Roberts the two hardworking Year Coordinators who led this year group over the 5 Years.
After their heartfelt address to the school, Head Boy, Ben McDonald and Head Girl, Aya Bilal then led the Year 12s through the traditional Guard of Honour made up of Year 10 & 11 students, staff and parents.
On Monday 28th October, the formal Year 12 Graduation Ceremony was conducted at Kingdomcity in Canning Vale. This was an outstanding evening and one I’m sure the 2019 Graduating Class and family and friends will remember forever.
Congratulations to all the award winners on the night and to our invited guests and staff for their attendance. Special thanks to the numerous staff for their time and effort in organising this important event, all of our invited guest speakers and presenters and to Mr Beecham our very entertaining Master of Ceremonies.
I hope that our departing Year 12 students look back on their time at our school with fondness and take with them many lasting memories. The dignity and respect with which you left Thornlie will also be long remembered within our school. This will always be the school in which you grew into your adulthood, and we hope that a part of us always stays with you. Best of luck for the future.
We now move rapidly into a wide range of end of year school events where students will showcase their knowledge and skills.
We look forward to parents joining us to celebrate their children’s progress over 2019.

Music Notes
Term 4 is shaping up to be a busy term for the musicians in Instrumental Music! We have recently had our first performance for the term, with our flautists providing music at the pre-ceremony function at the Class of 2019 Graduation. Thanks to the flute players and their teacher Ms Corrina Collins for providing music to create a lovely ambience whilst staff, students and their families enjoyed canapés and mingled.
Our wonderful flute students
The students involved in instrumental lessons should be completing Term 4 assessments with their tutors as we prepare to complete Semester 2 reports. It is important students attend all lessons with their practice journal and books as required. Lessons often only go for 20 or 30 minutes ONCE a week, therefore it is imperative students don’t miss lessons as they only have a limited amount of learning time on their instrument each week.
We have a number of upcoming performances lined up in the latter half of this term for our musoes. More details will be sent home once we have confirmed dates and times for these performances. As it stands from Week 4, the performance schedule is as below. Notes will go home closer to the event, and in some instances, invitations on Consent2Go.

2019 School Sport WA Interschool Athletics Carnival
On the 18th of October over 100 students represented Thornlie Senior High School at the School Sport WA D Division Interschool athletics carnival at the Western Australia Athletics Stadium. It was a great opportunity on a fine and sunny day for our students to put their best foot forward and achieve their personal best against strong competition.
There were a number of outstanding individual efforts throughout the day but none more so than Harlem Tata-Paki in Year 7 who competed in 7 events, finishing Runner-up Champion Boy.
All students who attended were well lead by Captains Abdullah Cirillo and Rahel Tsegay Zakarias and competed to the best of their ability, achieving valuable points for Thornlie SHS in all events. It was noted throughout the day how great our student’s behaviour, endeavour and sportsmanship was which is symbolic of the effort produced. Thornlie SHS excelled in the relay events winning 4 out of 10. This gives great satisfaction to win as part of a team and all teams were cheered on loudly from their peers in the stands.
A big thank you to all the staff from the Health and Physical Education Department and Certificate II Sport and Recreation students who assisted with teaching, training and coordinating at the Interschool athletics carnival days. Overall Thornlie Senior High School finished 6th out of 9 schools which will give us great incentive to continue to learn and grow from the experiences, holding us in good stead for next year and beyond to achieve more success.

Year 7/8 Team and Coaches |
Year 9/10 Team |
On a wet, overcast and windy day in October, Thornlie SHS was represented by two teams at the Regional T20 South West Big Bash Carnival, held at Tompkins Park in Melville. Students had been training hard before school in the lead up to the event and that showed in the results against very strong opposition. The Year 7/8 team battled hard and improved significantly throughout the day under the guidance of our Certificate II Sport & Recreation Year 11 coaches. Our middle school team, Year 9/10 remained very competitive throughout winning two out of five games narrowly missing out on regional finals by finishing 3rd in their age group. Both teams showed exemplary sportsmanship and displayed great care and encouragement for each other which was recoginised by opposing teams. Overall, the day was very enjoyable for all involved and I thank all the students who participated for competing so well.
Thanks,
Mr Sean Brennan

Year 11 Outdoor Education Camp
During Weeks 2 & 3, 30 plus Year 11 students ventured to Dwellingup for their second Outdoor Education camp of the year. We were very fortunate with the weather conditions which were fine and sunny throughout, without being too chilly in the morning. The camps mode of travel was cycling as the students took turns leading their peers as they rode through the jarrah forest on the Munda Biddi Track which stretches over 1000km connecting Kalamunda to Albany.
Even though cycling was difficult at times, the students all displayed a brilliant can-do attitude and assisted each other to achieve their goal of completing the ride even if there were a few extra cuts, scratches, bruises and dented egos by the end. We camped at Nanga Mill csuttampsite where students displayed their camp craft including setting up tents, debriefing and most importantly cooking. Day Two featured student’s mountain biking the single trails just outside of Dwellingup, Turners Hill and the Marrinup trail. Students were able to display their mountain biking skills over jumps, logs, manmade objects both up and down hill.
All students who attended typically shone Thornlie SHS in a positive light and gained valuable experiences along the way. A big thank you to staff members who gave up their time to join the students on camp and assist them with their adventures – Mr Firth, Mr Brennan, Miss Stacy and Mr Symmans.

Girls Touch Rugby
Our girls Thornlie Thunder Touch Rugby team played an amazing game against Lakelands Senior High School (a specialist rugby touch school) on Thursday 24th October at Lakelands home ground. The final result was 5 – 6 to Lakelands which was a massive improvement from last year. Our try scorers were Connor Bromilow, Tracey-Lee Kingi and Phoenix Mahaki.
The girls have been training afterschool every Tuesday this year and their skill set has greatly improved over the year.

Year 12 Certificate II in Hospitality - High Tea Event
Due to wet and wild weather conditions we had to have this final Year 12 event indoors. A big thank you to all staff and students who came on the day and enjoyed a sumptuous tiered platter of scones with jam and cream, mini oreo cheesecakes, profiteroles, hot savouries and sandwiches served with a choice of hot beverages.
International Bistro Event
It has been a busy and productive year for our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality classes. Our first event was held mid-year and was a joint effort with both years working collaboratively with an International Guest Chef, Mr Bevan Smith, who engaged our students with the preparation of a traditional Maori Hangi and later recreated the meal as part of our International Bistro Event.
What a fantastic day…a kitchen buzzing with activity and excitement as the two year groups worked and mentored each other in customer service and various hospitality skills. This was a very popular event and was totally booked out in a very short time. Over 60 guests were catered for on the day.
The wild and wintery weather also impacted on customer comfort as we manoeuvred seating to avoid the downpours and wind. The overall feedback was positive and many returned to enjoy the two events that followed later in the year.
A huge big thank you to Bevan for all your time and support of our Hospitality students this year.
All events are open to family and friends of Thornlie Senior High School so watch this space for 2020 events and get your booking in early.
Beach Shack 2019
Congratulations to the Year 11 Certificate II in Hospitality students who finished their first year of this course with a very successful event, even though it was another wild day with hail stones and plenty of rain.
A special thank you to Carina Tan for her awesome photography skills that captured the students in action during the year.

HASS Week
So much happened during Term 3, culminating with the exciting HASS Week. This year, the students were given a chance to shine across all areas of HASS, from the quiz, to the library displays and finally, the annual Year 8 Catapult Competition.
Library Displays
The students took a great deal of pride showing off their hard work to friends and classmates.
Student work included scale models of a catapult (trebuchet), a medieval castle, a Japanese house, all inspired by their history classes.
There are dioramas of the execution of Joan of Arc, the Court of Henry VIII, Marco Polo’s journey across the desert and samurai in ancient Japan.
Students worked with craft material such as paper mache and card to create their own versions of medieval crowns, to go with the posters of Charlemagne and William the Conqueror whose forces at the Battle of Hastings killed King Harold with an arrow to the eye.
Finally, there was an amazing student-produced facsimile of the flag carried by Joan of Arc when she led the French troops to defeat the English.
This board shows student work from topics and time periods covered in History classes, such as The Black Death and World War I, as well as historical figures such as Charlemagne.
This board shows a variety of important events, such as the Crusades, the voyage of Marco Polo on the Silk Road, the Great Depression and the Treaty of Versailles.
History classes covered a diverse selection of significant figures. This exhibit of students’ class work displays information on two important historical figures; Marco Polo, a famous explorer and Emperor Constantine, a powerful leader. There is also an examination of the weapons of destructions used in World War II. Students learned how the actions of an influential few can have a significant impact, both short and long-term.
I have been reliably informed by the library staff that the displays were very well received by the students and sparked a lot of interest in the various HASS areas.
Kinetic Sand
Students were challenged to mould landforms, based on the topographic outlines provided. This activity took place during breaks in the library and was well-attended.
HASS Quiz
The HASS Week Quiz was launched through the homerooms. Each day, homeroom classes would compete by answering questions from all areas of HASS.
Friday: History
Monday: Geography
Tuesday: Economics
Thursday: Civics and Citizenship
Congratulations to the winning homeroom Hannan 2, who won the pizza lunch!
Catapult Competition
Year 8 classes were given one week to research and construct their own catapults. Unlike real catapults, made of mighty wood and thick rope, to hurl boulders over vast distances, theirs were somewhat different. Pairs of students were given: 30 pop sticks, 6 elastic bands and one plastic spoon. The giant boulders were substituted with yummy marshmallows.
The designs were many, varied and imaginative. Only the two best entries from each class took part, so innovation and testing was key.
Launch Day!
Thursday Periods 1 and 2 (Week 10), was the launch day for the best two teams from each class. Students bought down their winning creations to the quadrangle outside the canteen and the board was set to start recording their achievements.
There was a palpable excitement in the air, as students from different classes confidently claimed they would beat the all-time record of 10.95m!
With not only personal and class pride on the line, there were canteen vouchers for first, second and third!
Precise measuring, tagging and recording was needed from our student volunteers, who all did an excellent job.
Some last minute adjustments on the launch table, and it was time to see who would propel their marshmallow the farthest.
It was interesting to see that while some catapults did not launch vast distances, the grouping of their shots was almost identical!
Both teams from one class (white flags) landed all of their marshmallows within ~ 50cm. There was actually a horizontal line of three at the practically the same distance!
The results were coming in thick and fast, as the suspense built!
Ms Knight was sure that her class had a standout winner, until…
…the, “Not so fast, not so furious” team blew it out of the water, scoring 8.14m! Well done to Jasmine Monolos and Louise Philippe! A score of 8.14m is very impressive, but it looks like the record of 10.95m is still unbroken!
Thanks to the library staff for organising and installing the many students’ work and the teachers who coordinated their submissions or ran workshops.
I’m sure that everyone will be looking forward to next year’s HASS Week with great anticipation.

Ancient Rome Inspires Curiosity
The Year 7 Ancient Rome Museum excited and amazed parents and families as they were taken back in time to Ancient Rome.
Students created a model based on a topic from their essay on an aspect of GRAPES, the basic elements to study a civilisation – Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economics and Social Structures.
The students took guests on a tour of the Colosseum, a trip of the Mediterranean Sea, and demonstrated the incredible engineering and architecture of the aqueduct. Knowledge was imparted as students showed off their understanding of history, engaging them with interesting facts and thought-provoking research.
The exhibition successfully brought history to life and all left with a smile on their face having gained new knowledge about Rome and enjoying the students’ enthusiasm for learning.

Your Move
Here at Thornlie Senior High School, we are pleased to be implementing the Your Move Schools program. Your Move Schools is a community-focused program that supports schools and students to use active and sustainable transport options to and from school more often.
As part of this program a range of fun and rewarding activities can be chosen from the Your Move schools program activities list or students can even designed their own exciting activities. Every completed activity which is posted online in the Your Move community will earn reward points. The more creative the activity the more points we can earn. These points can be redeemed at the Your Move online shop for a huge range of exciting prizes like a $5 Coffee Club vouchers, or even a $50 voucher for The Bicycle Entrepreneur, stickers, tattoos and much more. Last week we conducted the first step towards earning points by undertaking ‘A hands up’ survey to provide a benchmark to track our schools progress.
I am looking for volunteers to create a student team to assist with planning and implementing activities and writing stories online. If you are interested in joining Your Move team please put your name on the list in Student Services or see us in the Health Centre.
Talk soon. Talk often. A guide to for parents talking to their kids about sex.
This has been revised and reprinted and is an excellent resource for parents and caregivers. It covers topics like the ages and stages of sexuality, pornography, domestic violence, respectful relationships, sexual abuse, kids and teens with special needs, diversity and tips for talking to adolescents. Please contact the health centre if you would like a FREE copy. There is also a Top tips for talking about sex available.
First top tip for talking about sex
Talk Soon. Start talking about bodies from birth. Talk about puberty and respectful relationships. Discuss topics long before your child is going to experience them. Practise talking about sexual matters before your children reach an age when they are reluctant to discuss the topic.
The content does align with the health curriculum that the school uses. If you have any questions or concerns then please feel free to come and talk to us.
Drinks - what should children drink?
Drinking plenty of water is essential for people of all ages. When your child is thirsty, encourage them to drink plain water.
It is recommended that:
- children aged 5 – 8 years’ drink 1000ml per day (4 big cups)
- children aged 9 – 12 years’ drink 1500ml per day (6 big cups)
- young people aged 13+ years drink 2000ml per day (8 big cups).
Drinking milk is also important, as it provides children with the calcium they need for growing bones and teeth. If your child doesn’t drink milk, try yoghurt, cheese or calcium-fortified soy milk.
The drinking of cordials, soft drinks and fruit juices should be limited, as the sugar in these drinks may contribute to tooth decay and unhealthy weight.
Energy drinks and artificially sweetened drinks are not suitable for children.
For more information go to the link below:
https://livelighter.com.au/
Sun Safety
With the hot weather approaching, it is important to talk to your children about sun safety and teach them good sun protection habits.
Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.
Slap on a hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears.
Seek shade.
Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards.
Extra care should be taken between 10am and 3pm when UV levels reach their peak.
For more information see the Cancer Council website:
http://www.cancer.org.au/
Anxiety
The Health Centre has been collecting goodies that our students can use to assist them in self-regulating when they become distressed or anxious. These include mindfulness magazines, a variety of stress balls, colouring in, textural items, coloured sand hourglasses, comfortable big brightly coloured cushions and glitter globes to name a few. Thank you to Woolworths Earn and Learn program and the community members who supported us by putting their stickers in the collection boxes.
Anxiety – how to help your child
All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development. Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension. Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others.
Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense.
If your child is experiencing anxiety try to:
- Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it.
- Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face situations they’re not yet ready to face.
- Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help
- Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being afraid.
- Avoid labelling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’.
Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or interferes with their friendships, school work or family life.
If you are worried about your child, contact your local Community Health Nurse, School Psychologist or General Practitioner. For more information about anxiety in children go to the link below:
