About this event

At some point, a successful small business will grow beyond what one or two people can manage. Putting on a first (or second, or third) employee can be a challenging process…but putting off the process can be a sure-fire way of slowing down business growth.

Business Navigator Western Downs is excited to offer a 4-part series on how small businesses owners can prepare to grow and manage the human resources side of their business. Each session is a 90 minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A.

Session 1 and Session 2 will help small businesses prepare – operationally and financially - for growth. Laura Elkaslassy, CEO of Profit First Australia, will be presenting strategies and frameworks developed by Mike Michalowicz, best-selling author of Profit First, Clockwork and Fix This Next.

Session 1 _ Growing Pains (September 23) will focus on how to identify what aspects of your business are the most important to protect, and how to create new roles that support your business growth.

Session 2 - Resourcing Growth (October 7) will centre on how to financially prepare for the additional costs of growth.

Session 3 and Session 4 focus on the issues of attraction and retention of employees in regional communities, and the Western Downs region in particular.

Session 3 - Attracting Employees (October 14), presented by Professor Karen Becker, will look at researched barriers and strategies for attracting people to rural communities; Lidewij Koene will demonstrate resources available from Western Downs Regional Council, and Alistair Green will present on local strategies for attracting and retaining the right people to your business and community.

Session 4 - Rethinking Retention (October 21) will delve into actionable strategies and frameworks for ensuring that you keep and develop your most productive employees. An industry representative from Department of Education, Small Business and Training will give an overview of incentives and support available for small businesses.
