Proposal

To assign the name of Falkor Reef to an unnamed undersea geographic feature

Local government

Cook Shire (the geographic feature is not located within a local government area, however, Cook Shire is the closest)

Additional information

Australian scientists aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor discovered the 500m high undersea reef during a 12-month expedition in Australian waters. The name Falkor Reef honours the Research Vessel Falkor, which conducted the first systematic seafloor mapping and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey of the offshore Cape York Peninsular area and that led to the discovery of this significant detached reef feature.

Proposed

30 September 2022

Decided

4 August 2023 (The decision has been made not to proceed with the proposal and not to name the feature Falkor Reef.)

Proposal

To change the name of the geographical feature Fraser Island to K’gari and to change the name of the locality Fraser Island to K’gari (pronounced 'GUR-rie' or 'Gurri').

Local government

Fraser Coast Regional

Additional information

K’gari is the Butchulla Peoples’ traditional name for the island. The name K’gari comes from the creation story of the island, which has been passed down orally for generations between the traditional owners of the surrounding land and waters, the Butchulla People.

K’gari is the name of the white spirit that was sent down from the sky by the god Beeral, to help his messenger Yindingie make the land and seas that are home to the Butchulla People.

Consultation with Butchulla elders has determined that pronunciation and spelling will vary among different family groups. Both pronunciations 'GUR-rie' and 'Gurri' are commonly accepted and used.

To fully understand the origins of the proposed place name of K’gari the following texts retell the creation story in its traditional context, along with artwork that is used when passing this cultural knowledge on between generations:

  • K’gari: the Creation of Fraser Island authored and illustrated by Nai Nai Bird (2019) and published by Cengage
  • Legends of Fraser Island authored by Olga Miller and illustrated by Nai Nai Bird (1994) and published by Rigby Heinemann

The proposal to rename the locality is being run concurrently to the geographical feature proposal as to maintain alignment between the island name and locality name. Alignment of these names minimises potential confusion in the delivery of emergency and essential services.

Decision

To discontinue the name Coonoagarramine Creek.

Additional information

Coonoagarramine Creek and Coondagarramine Creek are watercourse names in the Queensland Place Names Gazetteer. Evidence demonstrated the names both applied to the same watercourse, and that ‘Coonoagarramine Creek’ is an incorrectly spelt duplicate of the correct name, ‘Coondagarramine Creek’.

Decided

20 July 2023

Decision

To change the name from ‘Bennet Creek’ to ‘Bennett Creek’.

Additional information

Bennet Creek is the official name of a watercourse in the place names gazetteer. The name has been recorded with the spelling of ‘Bennet Creek’.  However, evidence indicates the correct spelling of the name is ‘Bennett Creek’. The name is believed to derive from the Bennett family who historically ran a ‘bush pub’ in the vicinity.

Decided

17 July 2023

Decision

To change the name from ‘Maclennan Cay’ to ‘McLennan Cay’.

Additional information

A technical correction to more accurately reflect the name of the person commemorated. The prior spelling of the place name, Maclennan, is a less common variation of William Rae McLennan’s surname. Military enlistment records in the National Archives of Australia establish that he signed his own name “McLennan”. An ex-serviceman and a naturalist, McLennan had a particular interest in ornithology and undertook scientific expeditions in North Queensland to collect fauna specimens.
