Becky Turner
Former TasTAFE Hairdressing Apprentice
Becky Turner has worked in hairdressing for the past eight years. She started her hairdressing apprenticeship at TasTAFE in 2014 and completed in 2018.
Becky has mentored and run workshops for a number of hairdressers and apprentices. She currently runs her own business part-time and is also manager of Norris Hair and Beauty where she runs in-salon training.
Becky won gold at the WorldSkills Australia regional competitions in 2017 and went on to represent Tasmania at the WorldSkills Australia national championships in 2018, taking home a silver medal in hairdressing.
Steve Scarafiotti
Former mature age Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Apprentice
Steve is into his fourth year as a qualified Refrigeration Mechanic after completing his Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration with TasTAFE as a mature age apprentice. After 10 years of working in an office, Steve was sick of sitting at a desk. Wanting to be more active in his job and work with his hands, he decided a trade would provide him the opportunity to do just that.
Steve completed his Certificate II in Electrotechnology with TasTAFE to help him narrow down either becoming an electrician or a refrigeration mechanic. He chose becoming a refrigeration mechanic, applied for numerous apprenticeship jobs and luckily landed a job that would see him begin a rewarding career that he’s never looked back from.
Guy Gibson
Training Manager, Incat
Guy has worked in the heavy equipment industry for over 40 years. He has completed three separate trades and holds a range of additional qualifications, including a degree in Adult Education.
Guy commenced his apprenticeship as a vehicle mechanic, joining the Australian Army at 15, developing a career which spanned almost 21 years. He has spent the past 20 years working in Adult Education both in registered training organisations (RTOs) and industry.
Guy currently works for Incat as the Training Manager, where he is responsible for the identification of training needs, and subsequent development and delivery of training for Incat employees across the business.
Guy is the direct manager for first year apprentices and responsible for their initial onboarding and their workplace development before apprentices are rotated through different aspects of welding and fabrication.
Michael Norton
TasTAFE Cookery Teacher
Michael has been sharing his skills with cookery apprentices as a trainer since 2009 and has been a cookery teacher at TasTAFE Drysdale for the past four years. He has twice been nominated for VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year and is a Member of the Technical advisory committee responsible for developing the new commercial cookery training package.
Michael has been an active member of the Australian Culinary Federation for the past 10 years and is currently its Assistant Director for Tasmania, as well as an ACF young chefs’ mentor.
Michael began cooking in 1997, working across Australia in food service outlets including, pubs, resorts, cafes, function centres, hotels and fine dining restaurants in positions from Commis Chef to Executive Sous chef.
Damian Peirce
Career Facilitator, Industry Training Hub Burnie
Damian has worked in the vocational education and training (VET) sector for 20 years, and knows how it works thanks to his broad range of experience.
He currently provides advice to people interested in doing an apprenticeship or traineeship. Because he’s worked for a variety of businesses that offer apprenticeships, manage apprenticeships or deliver apprenticeships, he is considered by many to have a good foundation of relevant knowledge.
Damian’s roles have included work as a trainer and assessor, a skills advisory manager, an operations manager and a business development manager. Damian has worked with many Tasmanian employers across all sectors, supporting and guiding them in achieving their workforce development goals and assisting in creating effective training and finding solutions to skills shortages.
