Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Information on Unique Student Identifiers (USI)

What is a USI?

A USI is a number issued by the Australian Government to help keep records relating to your tertiary studies. You can find further information about USIs on the Government USI website.

How do I get a USI?

If you completed study at TAFE or with an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) after 2015, you might already have a USI. You can check if you already have a USI on the Australian Government's Find your USI page.

If you do not have a USI, you can generate one on the Australian Government's Get a USI page.

Do I need to provide my USI to UNE?

You will need to provide your USI before Census Day if you fit into any of the following categories:

  • You are making use of a HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP or OS-HELP loan.
  • You are studying in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), even if you are not making use of a HECS-HELP loan (i.e., you are choosing to pay upfront or are required to pay upfront).

All students fitting the above categories will need to provide their USI by Census Day. If you fall into one of these categories and have not provided your UNE with your USI by Census Day, we will be required to cancel your enrolment and withdraw you from your units.

You must ensure your name and Date of Birth details registered with the USI Registry matches exactly with the name and date of birth details you have registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and UNE.

Almost all UNE Students graduating, regardless of their fee category or when they commenced, will also need to provide UNE with their USI before they can graduate. As such, even if you don't fit into one of the above categories, we encourage you to provide your USI as soon as possible.

If you are studying off-shore (outside of Australia) as an online International Student with UNE, you are not required to provide a USI.

How do I provide my USI to UNE?

You can provide your USI via MyUNE

  1. Navigate to myEnrol and click on the Enrolment Portal
  2. Click on the USI Verification option under Course Details on the left-hand side of the screen
  3. Add your USI in the field labelled Unique Student Identifier
  4. Click Verify

I'm not seeking financial assistance. Do full-fee paying students need to obtain a USI?

All students will need to have a USI to get their Higher Education Award (degree/qualification/certificate). If you plan on graduating, you need a USI regardless of your financial payment choice.

I am having trouble getting a USI. Who can help?

The USI registration system is administered by the Australian Government. Therefore, UNE is unable to assist with obtaining a USI. You can find USI support contacts on the Australian Government's USI Help page.

Will my transcript(s) be available via my USI portal?

Currently, it will not be possible to view your UNE transcripts through the USI portal. Students can check their unit details and history in their MyUNE account (under MyEnrol) or request an official transcript.

What if I don't provide my USI?

UNE will be contacting students via email who are required to provide their USI prior to Census Day. If your USI is not provided by Census Day, you will be withdrawn from your units.

If you are not required to provide your USI by the upcoming Census Day, you will still be required to provide it before you can graduate if you intend to graduate in 2023 onwards.

Can I get an exemption from providing a USI?

Please refer to the Australian Government's Individual Exemptions page for information on USI exemptions.

I am studying my course through OUA (Open Universities Australia). Do I need to provide my USI to UNE?

If you are studying your course through OUA, you need to provide your USI to OUA instead of UNE.
