Global Conference for a Nuclear Free, Renewable Energy Future - 10 Years Since Fukushima

Ten years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the disaster at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Many countries around the world have learned from the lessons of the disaster and taken major steps towards zero nuclear power and the promotion of renewable energy. However, Japan, the country responsible for the accident, has failed to make a decision for zero nuclear power and is lagging far behind the rest of the world.
This conference will inform people in Japan of global trends promoting an energy shift, while also sharing information with people around the world of the current situation and challenges in Japan after the disaster at the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
Today, COVID-19 pandemic is not only threatening the lives of people around the world, but also exposing them to great mental and economic hardship. Through this online global conference, we will pursue a new model for a post-COVID-19 society. This model is to take into account environmental sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and pass on hope to future generations.
This event is an opportunity to learn from the world, and apply the lessons of the Fukushima disaster to the global context. We look forward to your participation.

Schedule(JST, GMT+9)

The event will be held entirely online, using YouTube. Please click on the Youtube icon on each event description to participate. These events will be freely available for viewing after the end of the global conference (excluding “Films”).

Wakasa Bay, Lake Biwa, and the Kansai Region - 50 years of the Movement Against Nuclear Power Plants
Thirteen nuclear power plants, now aging, have been in operation concentrated around the Wakasa Bay along the coast of Kyoto and Fukui Prefectures. Located in close proximity is Lake Biwa, the source of water for 14.5 million people in the Kansai region. If an accident similar to the one in Fukushima were to occur at one of the Wakasa Bay plants, it would have a fatal impact on Lake Biwa through air pollution, water contamination and destruction of the ecosystem. We will trace the history of the anti-nuclear movement in the area which began in the 1960s, and look at its future direction. Many visual components will be included, to convey the situation to international audiences.

Workers’ Exposure to Radiation Since the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Disaster
Nuclear power plants exist always on radiation exposure of the workers. The more you work, the more radiation you are exposed to and your life becomes at risk. Labor that involves radiation exposure carries a huge contradiction. The Fukushima nuclear power plant accident has created various types of radiation-exposed labor such as shutdown operation and decontamination work that continue to this day. In addition, radiation-exposed labor has been subjected to a multilayered subcontracting structure which has resulted in the violation of workers' rights. We will report on the reality of radiation exposure and the current situation of the workers’ network. We will also discuss workers exposed to radiation inside the power plant facilities.
