Outrage after Adam Brookman released early due to pandemic discount

A man convicted of a terrorist-related offence has been released early from a Victorian jail due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Adam Brookman, who has been in custody since he was arrested in July 2015, was sentenced to six years and eight months on Wednesday after pleading guilty to one charge of foreign incursion.

But the 45-year-old father-of-five walked free that same night after having the remaining nine months of his sentence wiped.

Brookman, who travelled to the Middle East in 2014 and has admitted to aiding helping anti-government Chechen fighters, was granted an early release due to “emergency management days.”

The Victorian Government policy hands well-behaved prisoners a discount to their sentence for time spent in prison during lockdowns during the pandemic.

Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews has blasted the decision, slamming it as “absolute nonsense” in a fiery Sunrise interview.

“I think many people would say that this is an absolutely outrageous circumstance,” she said on Friday.

“Here we have an individual who was convicted of terrorist-related offences who should have been serving nine additional months, but he was released within nine hours of the sentence being handed down, simply because he was locked up during COVID.”

The Minister said Brookman’s release was a “Victorian Government policy failure.”

“The Victorian Government needs to reassess its policy immediately and change it,” she demanded.

“I mean, we can’t have these serious criminals out on the streets simply because there’s been a discount on their sentence.”

Andrews said the Australian Federal Police was aware that Brookman is back in the community and they were investigating slapping him with a control order to “keep Victorians safe.”
