Royal Commission Inquiry on abuse to hear Maori care stories

The voices of Māori survivors who were abused while they were in the care of State and faith-based institutions will be heard at the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry Maori hearing from starting from next week.

These morehu or survivors have waited years to tell their stories - and for two weeks online and at Orakei marae in Auckland the Commission will hear the brunt of the abuse many Māori experienced at the hands of the state.

One of the independent counsel assisting the commission, Julia Spelman, told Māni Dunlop it's an important event for everyone in Aotearoa, and she hopes it would encourage others to come forward
