ALLA National Board - Nominations Open

ALLA members would have received an email from Emma Joneshart, President of ALLA Ltd regarding a call for nominations for members to join the ALLA Ltd Board of Directors. Nominations will be voted upon at the ALLA AGM, held on Thursday 23 September during the ALLA Virtual Conference 2021.

The ALLA Ltd Board of Directors is an important part of the Australian Law Librarians' Association's governance. Made up of at least eight members of ALLA, nominations are open for the following positions:

  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Vendor Relations
  • CPD Coordinator
  • General Directors
The Vice President position is for a term of 3 years, consisting of a year each as Vice President, President and Past President. The other positions are for a 2-year term, allowing for a sufficient time period to become familiar with the role and have meaningful impact on ALLA projects.

Each role is varied, with support from other members of the Board, and in addition to monthly meetings (mainly via teleconference) the positions may be involved in:
  • Secretary: meeting co-ordination, agenda and minute taking
  • Treasurer: finances, liaison with membership coordinator and Australian Law Librarian Journal editors
  • CPD Coordinator: organise national online CPD events, liaison with Divisional CPD Coordinators, and upload of recorded events to the ALLA website for members to access
  • Vendor Relations: advocates on behalf of ALLA members with publishers, channels concerns of members to the relevant publishers, position papers (such as the recent eBook Survey)
  • Review of any membership needs or issues - responding to member feedback
  • Approval of outgoing expenditure
  • Projects such as an improved ALLA website, developing state-based inter-library loan programs, and the ALLA Conference, a national Finding the Law program, and more.
Joining the ALLA Ltd Board of Directors may sound like a lot of work, and we recognise that any volunteer position with ALLA involves a time commitment, but where else will you get to shape the future of our association and the profession as a whole - we have also been reliably informed that improved and modernised systems are making aspects of this work less time intensive.

The ALLA (WA) Committee would like to take this opportunity to encourage WA members to put their hat in the ring to join the ALLA Ltd Board of Directors. It is a great opportunity to make sure the West has a voice, but also will provide you with excellent professional development opportunities.

Is there something you would like to see ALLA do going forward? Is there anything you think they can improve upon in the coming years? If you do - why not put those thoughts into motion by taking a position on the National Board? If the Board is not your thing, but you still have ideas, let the current ALLA Board know, or contact your local ALLA Divisional President or Committee Member to share your ideas and we will report back.
