The Challenge
Trove is an online platform owned and run by the National Library of Australia. It’s used by more than 30,000 people every day, including members of the humanities, arts and social science (HASS) research community, to access, create and analyse Australia’s cultural data.
Trove is an aggregation and shared repository of cultural collections from more than 900 gallery, library, archive and museum (GLAM) partners, including 41 million pages of digitised collection material. Its content is fully searchable, opening new research questions for Australian HASS researchers to explore.
The Response
Our project, Trove Enhancements, has improved the Trove pages for researchers and updated the public Trove API to provide better support for Australian HASS researchers.
The Outcomes
The project was completed in September 2023 and delivered a number of improvements to Trove in the following areas:
Trove users can now:
- use Trove API version 3.0, which will remain in Beta until version 2.0 is retired in February 2024
- download citations from a Trove list for upload into BibTeX or EndNote
- bulk download search results and manage downloads in Trove account.
The project has updated:
- Trove help contents for:
- the Trove Research landing page with a How to research on Trove guide.
- Live webinar for ARDC members and National Library of Australia researchers on 31 August 2023 (recording coming soon)
- New outreach process developed for sharing how researchers use Trove, with 3 features completed:
- Endometriosis in the Australian media by Erin Bradshaw, Monash University
- Australian ocean histories and the magic of Trove by Ann Elias, Professor Art History and Visual Culture and Member Environment Institute, The University of Sydney
- Don’t crowd for netball history: researching netball and other sports on Trove by Rob Hess, Adjunct Professor Institute for Health and Sport, Victoria University and Heritage Consultant. Netball Victoria.
