Grade Point Average (GPA) - Calculation

How is my Grade Point Average (GPA) calculated?

Grade Point Average is a measure of a student’s overall performance in their course.  GPA is not available for Alternative Entry Pathways, Honours or Research Courses. It is calculated separately for each Course a student has undertaken.

As of August 2018, your GPA is included on your official Academic Transcript.

GPA calculation does not include the following:

  • Overseas exchange units or Credit and Exemptions from other Universities
  • Ungraded Passes (UP, UF)
  • Interim Grades
    • 2023 (GP, SA, SX, DX, FCR)
    • pre 2023 (SX, SA, Q, NA, NS, G)
  • Withdrawals without academic penalty (WD)
  • Approved withdrawal (AW)
  • University withdrawal (UW)
  • Any units recorded as Advanced Standing
  • Units that use an Honours grading schema

**Please note:  Units which have been transferred from other Courses (ie. Duplicates) WILL contribute to the GPA calculation **

Grade Point Average

Code Grade Grade Value
1 Feb 2023
Grade Value
prior to 1 Feb 2023
HD High Distinction 4 4
D Distinction 3 3
C Credit 2.5 2
P Pass 2 1
N Fail 0 0

Please note: The new grading schema version start date is 01/01/2023. So it should only apply to the results from 2023 onwards

Example of how GPA is calculated

A student has the following grades recorded against 6 units:

Unit Student's Grade Achievable Credit Points Value Grade GPA Value Achievable Credit Points
x
Grade GPA Value
1 D 3 3.00 9.00
2 C 3 2.50 7.5
3 N 4 0.00 0.00
4 AW (Not included in calculation) - -
5 P 4 2.00 8.00
6 HD 3 4.00 12.00
TOTAL:   17   36.50

Using these values the calculated GPA
= (9+7.5+0+8+12) / 17
= 36.5 / 17
= 2.147
