Special Extension of Time

How do I apply for a Special Extension of Time for my assignments?

To apply for a Special Extension of Time (SET) for an assignment, you will need to complete the Special Assessment Application form. Your application should be received by the University within 5 working days after the start of the examination period for the trimester (i.e., after teaching has finished for the trimester).

Requesting Extensions(show)

If you only require a short extension (i.e., an extra day, or between to 2 or 3 weeks) for an assessment item, you will need to follow the relevant extension request procedure outlined within your myLearn unit, or contact your Unit Coordinator directly. You may also need to be aware of any School or Discipline Policies which may apply to assessment items within the unit.

You may apply for a Special Extension of Time if you require a more substantial extension (i.e. more than 2 or 3 weeks) for an assessment item, where you have been unable to submit due to illness or special circumstances which were beyond your control. It is recommended that you contact your Unit Coordinator prior to submitting your application, so that they are aware of your request for additional time.

The maximum extension which may be available is the last teaching day of the following trimester. However, please be advised that you may not be approved for an extension of this length.

Supporting Documentation(show)

As applications are subject to approval, all relevant supporting documentation (i.e., medical certificates; counsellor's reports; police reports; court documents) must be supplied within your application. Please be aware that applications without the relevant supporting documentation cannot be considered.

Any medical certificates that you include as part of your application do not need to specify the name or title of your illness at the time. However, any medical documents that you supply must provide details on the extent, duration and impact that the illness had on your ability to submit your assessment item.

Outcome and Results(show)

We will advise the outcome of your application by email to your student email address. Please be aware that if your request for an extension is approved, your application outcome will contain a new due date for your assessment item. You may then submit your assessment item directly within the relevant myLearn unit as required. Please contact your Unit Coordinator directly if you experience any difficulties with your final submission.

If you have been approved for a special extension of time, your result for the current teaching period will be recorded as SET until your assessment item is submitted, marked, and your final result for the unit can be determined.

Joint Medical Program(show)

If you are a Joint Medical Program (JMP) student, please complete the JMP Application for Adverse and Special Circumstances Form. It is advised that you refer to University of Newcastle's (UON) JMP Adverse and Special Circumstances Affecting Assessment Procedure when completing your application.
