Supporting our members to deliver an improved Australasian road transport network.
About us
Austroads is the peak organisation of Australasian road transport and traffic agencies. Austroads members are collectively responsible for the management of over 900,000 kilometres of roads valued at more than $200 billion representing the single largest community asset in Australia and New Zealand. Austroads’ purpose is to support our member organisations to deliver an improved Australasian road transport network. One that meets the future needs of the community, industry and economy. A road network that is safer for all users and provides vital and reliable connections to place and people. A network that uses resources wisely and is mindful of its impact on the environment. To succeed in this task, we undertake leading-edge road and transport research which underpins our input to policy development and published guidance on the design, construction and management of the road network and its associated infrastructure. We also administer the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS), a unique national system which enables road authorities to interact across state borders and directly supports the transport and automotive industries. Austroads provides a collective approach that delivers value for money, encourages shared knowledge and drives consistency for road users.

Work is progressing under the Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) in preparation for national reporting, in line with our commitment to publish road safety risk star ratings for all major arterial roads by early 2025. AusRAP star ratings are measured on a scale from 1 to 5 stars and provide a clear indication of the level of safety a road provides. A 5-star rating represents the highest level of safety, while a 1-star rating indicates a higher risk. Collection of road attribute data, coding, analysis, and quality assurance are major tasks, and we thank everyone in our Australian member road authorities for progressing AusRAP assessments! Learn more about AusRAP at austroads.info/ausrap #roadsafety #NationalRoadSafetyWeek

Approximately 1,200 lives are lost and 40,000 people suffer serious injuries from road crashes in Australia and New Zealand each year. The impact road trauma has on communities is devastating. #Austroads’ project “Charting a path to eliminating road death and serious injury” is well underway with its Stream 1 concluding and Stream 2 gearing up to begin. Stream 2 will develop Zero Pathway options and map all stakeholders whose involvement is required to implement essential and supporting actions to achieve a safe road transport system.
