Social Housing

Believe Housing Australia’s Social Housing (often called Community Housing) provides tenants with security, and the opportunity to be part of a supportive community where they feel valued.

Social housing is a term often used to refer to both public housing (owned and managed by the state government) and community housing (owned and/or managed by Community Housing Providers).

Believe Housing Australia is a nationally accredited Tier 1 Community Housing Provider (CHP).

Community housing

Community housing is mainly for people on low incomes.  It provides secure, affordable, long term rental housing for people with specific needs. This includes people who have experienced homelessness, older people, First Nations people, people living with illness or a disability, youth, people escaping domestic violence, and people from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Who can access community housing?

To access community housing, you need to:

  • Be an Australian resident
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have no ownership of any residential property
  • Meet the income and asset limits

If you don’t meet the income and asset limits, you may still be eligible to apply for community housing by taking a needs test. Ask us for more information.

You must also confirm that you:

  • Cannot stay where you are currently living
  • Are unable to maintain any other form of housing, for example, a private rental

Special circumstances may mean that you are still eligible for housing assistance, even if you don’t meet the above criteria.

Are you currently experiencing homelessness?

If you are in a crisis situation and need emergency accommodation, contact Homeless Connect SA on 1800 003 308. Or contact the Domestic Violence and Aboriginal Family Violence Gateway on 1300 782 200 or 1800 800 098. These numbers are free to call from a landline and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
