Tailored consumer engagement training for CEIH stakeholder groups

27 June 2022

With a focus on building capability and bringing excellence to the way we connect with our clinicians, consumers and communities, CEIH engaged an expert in the IAP2 approach to public participation through May and June to deliver tailored stakeholder engagement training to the Statewide Clinical Network Leads, Clinical Community of Practice Chairs and the CEIH Community of Consumers.

IAP2 is the preeminent international organization advancing the practice of public participation. Fostering a culture of participation and inclusion in leading system-wide change, the training provided tools and resources to enable CEIH Clinical Leads and members from various Communities of Practice, to bring rigour and take a proactive approach to engaging those who are impacted by our work. Associate Professor Anne Burke, Lead of the Statewide Chronic Pain Clinical Network, noted the training was re-affirming and a very useful conversation to have and revisit regularly.

The CEIH Community of Consumers were provided an opportunity to build their competencies and capacity to work together with clinicians and other stakeholders through customised sessions focused on empowering them in their participation in Statewide Clinical Networks and other CEIH activities.

The following feedback was received from consumers who attended the training:

  • It was great to have an in-person session with other consumer reps. Some great conversations and thought-provoking discussions on how we best represent ourselves as consumers. Was great to understand the importance of consumer advocacy throughout all decision-making processes.”
  • I really enjoyed the IAP2 training. I found that the process made me think a lot about how I could incorporate the learnings into my role as a both a consumer advocate and my increasing work in the research sector. It is good to see that this will help form a better connection between CEIH and the consumers they work with because of this training with each party understanding more of the role they play in working collaboratively with the other to reach a common goal.”
  • It’s been very informative and interactive. Stakeholder mapping is needed for most work we do and understanding different parties and their values are a must. She (the trainer) explains this very well. Hence, training is useful for both new and advanced consumers.”

We look forward to witnessing these groups put the principles of IAP2 into practice through their work with the CEIH
