Details

We’re nearing completion of the first stage of the High Street Upgrade and, as a result we now need to shift the temporary traffic management and commence work on the west side of High Street.

The second stage of the project is set to commence on 20 March and will continue until early May 2024. During this time, we will be working on the west side of High Street, our work will include:

  • Removal of the remaining tram tracks
  • Drainage improvements
  • Street lighting upgrades
  • Road reconstruction and paving
  • Footpath paving
  • Installation of new planter beds and street furniture

We will also be upgrading a water submain in the footpath whilst we are working there, to limit future disruption to the area.

Pedestrian, footpath and property access

Pedestrian access will be maintained on both the east and west side throughout Stage Two.

On the west side, the area directly in front of businesses will serve as the main walkway, so there will be less available footpath space. Due to this, the footpath will need to be clear of any signage and outdoor dining until Stage Two works are complete. One of our team will be in touch with those directly affected, to discuss specific details relevant to their business or residence.

Footpath paving work outside of all businesses will be conducted early in the morning and, to reduce disruption, will cease at 9am. Protective matting will be placed on the footpath to try and keep the site as tidy as possible and prevent any dust coming into the buildings.

We’re maintaining business and residential access at all times. Please contact CORDE if you have specific property access requirements e.g. medical visits, large vehicle deliveries, planned works.

Traffic impacts

  • The current one-way traffic management system will continue but shift to the west side of the road. Traffic will travel southbound on High Street between Tuam and St Asaph streets.
  • Cyclists will travel southbound on the road and northbound through a dedicated cycle lane. Signage will be in place.
  • On-street parking is temporarily removed to allow space for the works and to keep everyone safe.
  • Deliveries will continue to be managed by the STMS on site.  Please note there will be a Loading Zone installed on St Asaph Street at the back of Hokitika Sandwich Co from next week. For any queries in relation to deliveries, please use the contact details above.
  • Please keep an eye out for changes in traffic management, including following the detour signs. A 30km/h speed limit will be in place, so everyone stays safe. Our on-site staff can help with any issues or queries.
  • The majority of this work will happen during the day. However, there may be times when we will need to carry out specific tasks at night, when the roads are quieter and less congested. Before any night works are carried out, affected properties will be given a minimum 48 hours’ notice, prior to the works commencing.
  • The timing of the work and certain activities is weather and road condition dependent. We will provide regular updates throughout construction to advise of any changes.
  • There will be construction noise as the works take place, and we will do our best to keep this to a minimum. There may also be some traffic delays and areas cordoned off as we complete the works. As always, we will work with businesses and residents along the street to try to find the most convenient times to work, where possible.
