The nation’s peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander body says last night’s Federal Budget contained some positive steps, but more will be needed to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous life outcomes.

The peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled organisations is hoping tomorrow’s budget will demonstrate the Albanese government’s commitment to Closing the Gap.

The Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peaks (Coalition of Peaks) welcomes the recent announcements by the Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments of a landmark $4 billion dollar investment for housing in remote communities, and the significant agreement to fund all Northern Territory public schools fully and fairly by 2029.

The data update for the Closing the Gap Dashboard, released today, again demonstrates the need for urgent, committed, and sustained change by Governments in the way they work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples if all Australians are going to have equitable life outcomes.

The Joint Council on Closing the Gap met for the first time since the referendum held on 14 October 2023 on the principle of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution through a Voice.

The Productivity Commission today released a draft of its first review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (National Agreement). Members of the Coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peak Organisations (Coalition of Peaks) will meet in Melbourne this week to take stock of progress being made on the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.   

The Coalition of Peaks representatives attended the sixth meeting of the Joint Council on Closing the Gap today, the meeting focused on the parties Implementation Plans. These plans outline the tangible actions that are to be taken to advance the four Priority Reforms and achieve the socio-economic outcomes committed to under the National Agreement.
