News and announcements

Mobile hearing loops rolling out to Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) service centres

DTMR is committed to ensuring its products and services are accessible and inclusive for everyone.

DTMR recently introduced mobile hearing augmentation loop devices in all customer service centres and DTMR-led Queensland Government Agent Programs across Queensland.

The devices offer an improved experience for people with hearing aids or cochlear implants when accessing DTMR's services face-to-face, by helping to reduce background noise and improving speech clarity.

For customers in North Brisbane and Townsville, DTMR's Caboolture and Garbutt centres also offer two-way text communication devices, supporting individuals who are d/Deaf, have a hearing or speech requirement or have other barriers to communication.

Customers who are d/Deaf, or find it hard to hear or speak to hearing people, can contact DTMR through the National Relay Service. More information about this free, confidential service is available on the ‘Contact us’ page on TMR's website.

Customers can also search to find their nearest accessible service centre.

Co-design workshops to develop a digital inclusion website

Meld Studios is working with the Queensland Government to develop a digital inclusion website. The website will provide Queenslanders a single place to go to find information and resources to support them to get online and use technology. The website is also for organisations, carers and family who support others to get online.

Meld Studios would like to hear from people who might find it difficult to get online or not find it easy to use websites and technology.

They’re looking to speak to people who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • live in Queensland
  • are between 18 and 85+ years old
  • identify with having a disability
  • identify as a First Nations person
  • have a carer or support worker
  • speak a language other than English at home
  • are recent migrants
  • live in remote or rural areas
  • have or are experiencing housing insecurity
  • have or are experiencing job insecurity.

Participants will be guided through a two-hour co-design session. No preparation or previous experience is required to take part.

Sessions will be running throughout February and March 2024 and all participants will be paid for their time.

Register your interest by emailing or calling Alice Chatwood on alice@meldstudios.com.au or 0410 462 263.

If you have any queries regarding the project contact the Queensland Government Customer and Digital Group by emailing digitalinclusion@chde.qld.gov.au.

Implementing Queensland's Disability Plan

There are 7 outcome areas in Queensland’s Disability Plan 2022–27: Together, a better Queensland.

The outcome areas come from Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031. The strategy has a vision to create an inclusive Australian society which ensures people with disability can fulfil their potential, as equal members of the community.

The outcome areas are:

  • employment and financial security
  • inclusive homes and communities
  • safety, rights and justice
  • personal and community support
  • education and learning
  • health and wellbeing
  • community attitudes.
These are the areas people with disability said need to improve in order to achieve the vision of Australia’s Disability Strategy.

Find out more about what we are doing for employment and financial security below.
