News and announcements

3 December, www.idpwd.com.au, International Day of People with Disability
International Day of People with Disability 2023

Thousands of Queenslanders will be celebrating International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) on Sunday 3 December.

This annual United Nations observed day aims to raise awareness, understanding and acceptance of the 4.4 million people with disability in Australia and those across the world.

The 2023 IDPwD theme, ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities’, is an important recognition of the need for systemic change to address global disadvantage facing many people with disability.

The 2023 theme for IDPwD asks everyone to work together to make the world better and fairer for people with disability and aligns with goals outlined in Australia’s Disability Strategy and Queensland’s Disability Plan.

All Queenslanders are encouraged to celebrate IDPwD. To find an event in your community visit the IDPWD calendar.

Two emerging leaders and disability advocates are Queensland’s Anja Christoffersen and Grace Edward. Both are 2023 IDPwD ambassadors keen to make the world fairer and better for people with disability. Hear from Anja Christoffersen and Grace Edward.

For more information about International Day of People with Disability visit the IDPWD website. You can also read an Easy Read guide explaining the theme for IDPWD 2023.

Easy read resources can be found at the IDPWD website.

NDIS Workforce Capability Framework can help workers map their career

The NDIS Workforce Capability Framework has tools and guides that can support workers or potential workers to map their career path in the disability sector.

Workers or interested workers can use the Framework to improve the quality of support or find out what a career in the sector could look like for them. The Self-Assessment Tool for Potential Workers, Career Options Guide and Supervising for Capability Resources can be used to understand a career in the disability sector as well as map next steps.

Good Practice Guidelines for Engaging with People with Disability

As part of the implementation of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031, the Department of Social Services has recently released the Good Practice Guidelines for Engaging with People with Disability.

The guidelines have been designed to provide practical tools for the government, private and non-government sectors to engage people with disability in policy development and decision making.

The guidelines emphasise the need to engage people with disability across all phases of policy development and decision-making including planning, delivery and follow-up.

The guidelines are available on the Disability Gateway webpage.

Disability Reform Ministerial Council – NDIS Review and Disability Royal Commission

The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission) Final Report was publicly released on 29 September 2023. The Disability Reform Ministerial Council (DRMC) met on 3 November to discuss next steps on the NDIS Review Report and the Disability Royal Commission Final Report.

A key outcome from the DRMC meeting was a commitment by Disability Ministers to ensure people with disability and the disability community continue to play a key role in developing the detail and implementing the reforms that will arise from both the NDIS Review and the Disability Royal Commission.

Following the release of the NDIS Review Report, the Queensland Government will work closely with all key partners, including disability advocacy, peak and representative organisations and people with disability to inform its response to the NDIS Review and Disability Royal Commission recommendations and consider how any reforms should be best designed and implemented in Queensland.

The DRMC communique summarising the discussion is available at Disability Reform Ministerial Council (DRMC) (dss.gov.au).
