Children’s Writer in Residence

We are thrilled to introduce Australian children’s author Cristy Burne as the new Children’s Writer-in-Residence at Deakin for 2023.

Cristy works at the intersection of story, science, technology and creativity and is passionate about empowering our next generation of creative, science-savvy citizens. A writer of children’s fiction and non-fiction, Cristy has published 11 books – including two CBCA Notables – and has been shortlisted for the WA Young Readers Book Award, the Wilderness Society’s Environment Award for Children’s Literature, and the WA Premier’s Book Award.

Cristy’s latest books are junior fiction Beneath the Trees, narrative nonfiction Fiona Wood: Inventor of Spray-on Skin and Suzy Urbaniak: Volcano hunter and STEAM warrior, and the co-authored Wednesday Weeks series of fantasy adventures.

Cristy has worked as a science communicator for 20 years across Australia, Japan, Switzerland, the UK, US, South Africa and beyond. She also loves chocolate, and she’s always working on her next book.

Cristy recently won the 2022 West Australia Young Readers Book Award for her junior fiction novel Off the Track.
