Comment from Joe Melton: I wonder if it would be possible to generate the years 1901 – 1939 from the ERA5 dataset years from 1940 onwards. The idea would be to select ‘similar’ years to those needed early years based upon some criteria. If our best information is temperature going that far back (which I assume it would be), we could randomly fill in the years based upon how well a year matches our temperature envelope, which at very least could just be CRU. I am assuming we could find a reasonable handful of years before temperatures go up strongly. The caveat is there are a lot of ways we could select the years (per gridcell, global values, etc.). I just suggest it as it still may be easier than the other options.
