Interstate or overseas

Interstate voting

State election

If you are enrolled to vote in New South Wales and are interstate during a State election, you can either vote in person at an interstate early voting centre or by postal vote.

Local government election

You cannot vote in person outside of New South Wales for local government elections. If you will be interstate on election day you can vote at a pre-poll centre before you leave during the early voting period or by postal vote.

Pre-poll centre locations are published closer to each local government election.

Overseas voting

If you are enrolled to vote in New South Wales and are living or holidaying overseas during a State or local government election period, you will need to vote by post.

For State elections electors who are living or holidaying in New Zealand during the election period can vote:

  • in person before election day at an early voting centre in New Zealand, or
  • by postal vote.

Please note: iVote (internet voting on personal computers, tablet devices and smartphones) is not being made available for any upcoming elections. Operator-assisted telephone voting will be available to electors who are blind or have low vision.

Postal voting

For upcoming elections, we encourage you to apply as early as possible during the application period to ensure your postal pack is dispatched to you as soon as ballot papers are available.

Your postal vote can be returned by either hand delivery or by mailing to the international location that is closest to you. Alternatively, you can mail your postal vote to our Australian address.

If you are already a registered general postal voter you do not need to complete a postal vote application.
