Artist Impression of Bentham Street Upgrade

Project Information

We gathered information and feedback from the community on our plans to undertake renewal work in Wakefield Street between Victoria Square and Hutt Street.

The planned renewal includes new road surface, new kerbs and widening the central median to allow for planting of trees and understorey plants. As part of this, we are proposing to close the median at six locations to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

This project will also include undergrounding of powerlines which will enable the removal of stobie poles between Victoria Square and Pulteney Street. We will be replacing the existing stobie poles with new light poles improving lighting along the road and footpaths.

Background

This project supports the Council's 2020-2024 Strategic Plan outcome of ‘Environmental Leadership’ and provides ‘Connected and Accessible’ spaces for the community. We are seeking to prioritise streets to improve city greening and invest in better transport infrastructure by creating city streets that support pedestrians and cyclists.
