Project Update
To seek feedback on the future of Newlands Lane adjacent to Melbourne Street, we asked the community how often they use Newlands Lane, and the impact if Council were to close the lane.
Council has decided based on the feedback received to keep the laneway open. The project team will continue to investigate the laneway; with a re-design to be undertaken to consider pedestrian safety lighting with a renewed footpath to improve accessibility. The stormwater pipe under Newlands Lane will remain and continue to manage the Councils Stormwater system in this precinct. A consolidated review is also being undertaken with the Councils Stormwater Management Plan which will consider future opportunities across North Adelaide and Adelaide areas.

We heard that the laneway is a well-used and important link between Melbourne Street and Finnis Street and a valuable connection between North Adelaide and the Parklands.

Newlands Lane has been a public walkway since c.1891 linking Finniss Street with Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. It is also an important stormwater easement; however, the existing underground pipe is approaching the end of its serviceable life.

Background

Newlands Lane links Finniss and Melbourne Streets, and it is also an important stormwater easement. Council is planning to upgrade the pipe to ensure we continue to effectively manage our stormwater infrastructure. While we plan these works Council would like your feedback on the laneway in order to ensure our pathway network is suitable for now and into the future.
