From the Principal

What a wonderful turn out of parents for our first working bee of the year and a special thanks to Assistant Principal, Louise Manning and parent coordinator, Angus Northey.  It really illustrated the theme song from Year 6 production of High School Musical, “we’re all in this together”! Getting back into the swing of things together is one of the most important goals for our school community and we are thankful our P&C are so strong in supporting this. Remember to tune in to the P&C meeting next Monday 20th June at 7.30pm. Assistant Principal, Michael Nemeth, will be outlining the implementation of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education syllabus (including sport) at our school. If you have any questions in advance please send them through so that thoughtful answers can be given.

I’ve also enjoyed walking around the corridors and seeing familiar and new faces of parent helpers working one on one with students who need just a bit of extra individual guidance. You provide a wonderful support and I know gain a lot of personal satisfaction when you see the gains students make.

This week and next, students are involved in activities to help them understand and appreciate Indigenous culture and present perspectives and issues. Thank you to Patrick Madden and Leanne King for their organisation. Please support your children in productive discussions around current issues so that our nation can develop fairer policies together.

With just over two weeks to go to our mid year vacation, teachers are completing assessments and reports which will come electronically through the SENTRAL parent portal on Monday of the last week. Take time to discuss progress and effort with your child in a positive manner. Enjoy our beautiful winter weather and sunshine.

Attendance Matters

At Randwick Public School we have great attendance rates at school. Lately we are having a lot of students arrive late to school. Arriving at school on time before 9am is very important as it ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day and it gives them an opportunity to settle into the class routines from the start of the morning session. It helps students to learn the importance of punctuality and routine as well as gives students time to greet their friends before school. Arriving to school on time also reduces classroom disruptions when entering the learning space. I ask for all your support in getting each and every student to school on time every day. If you are experiencing troubles with getting your child so school, please come talk to us so we can put a supportive plan in place.

Lost Property

There are huge amounts of lost property left around our school grounds each day. The Lost Property is located outside in the Administration Building and we encourage parents to come take a look before the end of term to collect any items that belong to their child/ren. Each week the lost property gets emptied but it is like a boomerang and it all just keeps coming back! Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled with your child's name so that these items can be returned to them.

InitiaLit

At Randwick Public School, we are always looking for ways to improve our teaching and learning programs. On Thursday, Ms Allen, Ms Cake, Ms Valenti and Mr Madden visited Oatley Public School to see how they use the InitiaLit program in their K-2 classes. InitiaLit is an evidence-based whole-class literacy program providing all children with the essential core knowledge and strong foundations to become successful readers and writers. Currently at RPS, Year 1 classes use the InitiaLit program and we are now looking at using it in Kindergarten and Year 2 to ensure a consistent approach across the early years. It was impressive to see all the students at Oatley Public School engage in the program and the school's data has reflected the efficacy of the program. We are looking forward to sharing more with you about the program as we continue to develop our plans for implementation.

Grow Your Mind Parent Information Session

On Wednesday evening, we were lucky to have Kristina and Julia from Grow Your Mind present the Grow Your Mind Parent Information Session. The session covered:

  • What is Grow Your Mind - the research behind it
  • Introduction to the animal characters - you might have been hearing about a guard dog, wise owl and other interesting characters your children are learning about at school
  • Introduction to a range of positive mental health strategies your children are exploring with the Grow Your Mind program
  • Tips on things you can do to further support these skills and learning at home

If you missed the session (or if you'd like to watch again), you can access the recording using these details:

Book Week Competitions

While we celebrate Book Week next term, it's time to start thinking about our annual Book Week Competitions! This year we have a Drawing Competition for Yrs K-2 and a Writing Competition for Yrs 3-6. The Book Week theme this year is 'Dreaming With Our Eyes Open'. Students might like to prepare their entries over the holidays. These are due in Friday 19th August.

A huge shout-out to our volunteer book coverers! Week in, week out our Book Coverers collect boxes of new books, cover them to perfection and return them. Literally hundreds and hundreds of them. They quietly work away covering books at home for the students of RPS and our wonderful library. Thank you from all of us for all that you do. You're all amazing and your work is very much appreciated!!

Thank you!
