Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 1 Issue 2

Principals Message

Wow, what a quick 5 weeks! We are trialling a new format for our Newsletter and are hoping this online version works effectively. If you have any feedback please let us know. Our National School Opinion Survey for 2022 will be distributed to parents soon and we welcome your input to inform improvement planning.

Our students have settled in extremely well as they adapt to challenges presented. I would like to acknowledge the students and staff for their continued focus on a positive learning environment where all our students are engaged and participating.

Unfortunately, we are still 1 teacher short of running the school exactly as we want. We thank Mr Harland who, as part of the flying squad, has finished up in Room 6 one day a week and Physical Education the remaining days. We have finished a recruitment process and are please to announce we have Ms Kelleher who will start with us in Week 6.

I would like to thank our teachers who are sacrificing some of their preparation time to ensure that our programs continue to run. Their dedication to our students is nothing short of amazing! Thank you.

COVID Update

Thank you to all families for respecting the protocols our school has in place to keep us all safe. Recent communication from the Chief Health officer through the WA Education Department to schools across the state highlights the continuing need for our school to be prepared in case a positive COVID case is identified in the school.

In 2022, Newman Primary School will continue to promote safe hygiene practices such as: regular handwashing/ hand sanitiser, on site cleaning throughout each day, explicit teaching of handwashing processes to students and most recently, the installation of air purifiers in identified areas. We will also continue to encourage social distancing where possible. The Premier has announced Level 2 public health measures which came into effect on Thursday 3 March, details at wa.gov.au. They included the requirement for adults and children in Years 3 and above to wear masks at all indoor public settings. This means our students in Year 3 and above have been wearing a mask indoors at school since Thursday. They have been fantastic and we thank the community for their support. As you would be aware, all staff are fully vaccinated as directed, and there are processes in place to monitor contractors and regular visitors’ vaccination status.

Clear information has been shared with the school community regarding protocols in place in all schools. Your continued support is essential, as we implement some additional preventive measures across the school which will reduce whole school gatherings as directed, and aim to work more in our clusters. Kindergarten and Pre-primary, Year 1 - 2, and the middle and upper cluster Years 3 – 6. Most recently families have received our COVID response Plan to outline processes should we have a positive case in the school.

Newman PS School Board 2022

Over the coming weeks our School Board members will be introducing themselves in the Newsletter. A School Board is an important part of school governance and helps to inform strategic directions, align resources to priorities and provide advice and influence.

I would like to invite parents and community members to consider nominating to serve on our school board. For further information please contact myself on 9154 3900, use the link below and keep any eye out on our socials and Skoolbag App.

School Board 2022 Parent Nomination Form

The role of a school council (board) is outlined in the School Education Act 1999. In essence, the role of the school board is one of setting the long term future for the school and maintaining oversight (not management) of the school’s operation.  It is about providing additional expertise to help the school achieve the best outcomes for the students. Please click on the Download button to access the nomination form for more information or to register your interest for the Board.

Assemblies

Our first recorded Assembly took place last week and was certainly a unique experience for all of us. We learned a few things to improve on and will therefore maintain this format until we are able to return to a public forum. Monday morning Welcome Assemblies and Notices are being conducted over the PA. Merits certificates will continue to be presented in classrooms and teachers will post photos to their classes Connect page.

This year, we are excited to bring The Resilience Project into our school community and implement their wellbeing curriculum throughout our classrooms.

Current research tells us:

● 1 in 4 adolescents have a mental illness.

● 1 in 7 primary school students have a mental illness.

● 1 in 5 adults will experience mental ill-health throughout the year.

● 65% of adolescents do not seek help for mental illness.

The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to support positive mental health and build resilience. Presentations will include stories and research on how we can build mental health in our day to day lives, and support the mental health of the children in our care.

Year 1- Room 5 Counting Craft!

In Room 5, we have been learning to count to 100 and beyond. This is such a fun topic and we have been doing some awesome activities. We painted 100 colourful dots using cotton buds, which can be seen in the front office. Students had to ensure there were only 10 dots in each section, adding up to 100! We also made necklaces with 100 fruit loops on each. This took some serious concentration!
