School Values: Respect, Responsibility, Creativity, Integrity, Teamwork

Principal's Report

Dear parents,

It is great to be back to school and reconnecting with all of you and your children.  I would like to extend a big thank you to Karren Baker for stepping into the principal role my absence.  She has told me she enjoyed the experience, and it did not age her a bit (see photo evidence for proof 😊).

Solar Project

The solar panel installation is in full swing this week.  The front office doors are currently closed while these works are being completed.  Please enter the front office by the doors along the northern side of the school grounds or the rear entrance near the library. I would like to acknowledge Justin Sawyers, our school council president, for his active support in the solar grant application process.  Justin was instrumental in the writing of the Greener Government Schools grant and deserves recognition for his part in this exciting project.

Parent Teacher Interviews

On Tuesday, the 9th and Wednesday the 10th of August we are holding parent teacher interviews.  The 10 minute face-to-face interviews will be held during the afternoon and into the evening on both days and will give you an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with their classroom teacher. We strongly advise that facemasks are worn. To book an interview, please click on the link http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code/rj8bk

The Parent Teacher Interview dates and times below:

Years 3-6 - 2:00pm – 5:30pm

Wednesday 10th August

Farmers Market

The farmers’ market on Saturday was a great success.  We moved the market from the oval to the basketball courts and JCB for this winter market to avoid turning the oval into a bog.  While the space was tight, we still managed a good event.  The next farmers’ market will be held on Saturday the 29th of October.  Thanks to Briohny Lebbink for all her efforts in the organisation and set up of the farmers’ markets.  The markets bring in a strong revenue stream, through the stall holder fees, for the school to supplement our funds and create new and exciting learning space and opportunities for our students.

100 days of Prep

Congratulations to our Foundation students on a successful first 100 days at school.  On Friday last week, the foundation students celebrated this milestone.  The Foundation cohort have come such a long way in their first 100 days and are very much settling into the environment and meeting and exceeding the expectation of their teachers.  Well done everyone in foundation and we’re looking forward to seeing what you achieve in the next 100 days.

2022 Book Week – Dreaming with Eyes Open 20th – 26th August

We are celebrating book week this year between the 20th and 26th of August.  We will have a range of activities and events across the week to celebrate our love of reading and books in this week culminating our annual book week dress up parade on Friday the 26th of August.  The parade will be between 9:30am and 10:30am.  This will give you a bit of time to help your children develop a costume of their favourite book character.  We encourage everyone to re-use and recycle household items for their costume.

Kind regards and Sampai jumpa (until next time),

Matt Forrest

Dressing for Macedon Winter

Winter is in full swing and the mornings are frosty, we remind parents to dress their children with plenty of layers. The classrooms are all warm, however at recess and lunchtime the children need to be dressed appropriately.  Our lost property has numerous jackets, jumpers and coats. I Please come in and take a look.

If your child is coming home muddy, please pack a spare set of clothes in their bag. We have limited spare clothes in sick bay and would appreciate if you could supply your own.

New COVID Settings

Face Masks

All Victorians are now encouraged to wear a mask when with other people indoors and when you cannot physically distance, including outdoors.

Wearing a face mask can help protect you, your child/ren and those around you. Face masks stop droplets spreading when people talk, cough, sneeze and laugh, which lowers the chance of spreading or catching the virus. This information is especially important for those who are medically at risk.

The Victorian government’s advice recommends people over 8 years of age wear a face mask in indoor settings, except for close contacts, who must wear a mask indoors unless an exception applies. If you wish your child to wear a mask at school, and/or they themselves wish to wear a mask, we will ensure they are supported to do that. We have a supply of children's and adult masks at school or you can send your child to school with their own mask.

People are now exempt from testing and isolating four weeks after getting COVID, instead of 12 weeks.

Parents and carers who have COVID-19 can transport their non-COVID-19 children via private vehicle to their primary or secondary school when an alternative person is not available to assist. This will include school holiday programs held on school grounds.

This means that parents and carers will be able to leave COVID self-isolation to take their non-COVID-19 child to school or school holiday programs via a private vehicle.

The parent or carer must travel directly to and from the school only. They must remain in the vehicle at all times, unless it is reasonably necessary to leave the vehicle to walk the child to and from the entrance of the school safely. They must wear a face mask at all times.

Family members are asked to continue reporting positive COVID-19 cases to both the Department of Health and our own testing portal.

You must also let the school know if your child is a close contact. Students who are close contacts and want to attend should still take 5 RATs over 7 days and wear a face mask whilst indoors if they are aged 8 years or over.

Students should continue to stay home if they are unwell, even if they test negative on a RAT.

Rapid Antigen Tests

Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) will continue to be available in our school in Terms 3 and 4.

RATs continue to be required by students who are household contacts to attend school (5 negative tests over a 7 day period) or who have symptoms.

The ongoing supply of RATs to families in our school will ensure that parents and carers will have them should they need them if their child is a household contact or has symptoms.

Families must continue to notify the Department of Health and the school if their child returns a positive RAT result. Additionally, you should inform us if any of your children are household contacts.

Thank you also to all families who have got their child vaccinated.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has updated its recommendations around fourth doses of COVID-19 vaccination. From Monday 11 July 2022, people over 30 years will be eligible for a fourth dose. ATAGI recommends that people aged 50 to 64 years should have their fourth dose, while those aged 30 to 49 years may choose to have a fourth dose. For further information see the ATAGI website.

Getting vaccinated is easy and bookings can be done via the coronavirus website. If you have any questions about the vaccines, I encourage you to speak to your GP or a health practitioner.

For more information about face mask requirements, visit the Coronavirus website.

School Crossing Safety

Please use the school crossings on Smith St and Carrington St. We are fortunate to have two crossings staffed by council workers, so can we please make sure that we cross at the crossings and do not encourage children to cross over Smith Street away from the crossing. The supervisor has witnessed parents parked down the hill encouraging children to cross over Smith Street 50 metres from the crossing! We had a near miss yesterday afternoon, the 30 seconds you save, is not worth a serious injury.

Car Parking around the school

Families are reminded to obey the road signs in Smith and Carrington Streets around the school crossings and park safely in the streets surrounding the school, in particular Margaret Street as it is quite narrow. Parents are reminded that the staff car park is for staff.  Please do not park behind the cars parked in the staff car park as it is illegal and staff need access to their cars in case of an emergency.  The drop off area in the mornings is for people to "stop and drop".   With significant traffic before and after school and limited parking, you may opt to park further up the road in Smith Street where there are additional parking areas and walk the rest of the way, using the crossing at Carrington Street to enter the school.

Late arrivals

If your child is late to school (after 9:00am) can you please sign them in at the office. The teachers mark the rolls at 9:00am and if your child is late to class they will be marked as absent and you will receive an SMS asking about their whereabouts.  The classrooms are open from 8:50am.

Indonesian News

Year 3/4 Indonesian classes are having a go at growing rice this term. We've learnt that there are at least 3 words for rice in Indonesian: 'nasi' is cooked rice, 'beras' is processed rice and 'padi' is growing rice. The Indonesian word 'padi' is where we get the term 'padi field' for a rice field but in Indonesian a rice field is called 'sawah'. Our mini sawah are growing in greenhouses made from takeaway containers with donated polystyrene boxes to keep them warm(ish) at night. We're also growing some coriander in greenhouses made from repurposed plastic bottles. In Indonesia, food plants like this are often grown along the edges of the sawah. In these photos you can see Syd preparing the soil, Paige planting seed and a sawah growing on the bench in Room 6. Wish us luck! (Semoga sukses!)

STEM Update

Grade 3/4 students started filming their Green Screen (or, Chroma Key if you want to sound smart) epics this week.

We have already had a mix of (no doubt, Oscar winning) performances including Sport Biopics, Dance Sequences, (Matrix inspired) Kung Fu, and... a talking cat.

All students are doing a fantastic job, but this week I must give a shout out to Cooper B (pictured working on his video) for going above and beyond and doing a bunch of work at home to prepare for his Macedon Weather Report.

Cooper was happy to share his video, so you can see his (what turned out to be a rather accurate this week) weather report by clicking the link below.

Community News

Macedon Primary School

Macedon Primary School acknowledges the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the country upon which we learn and work. We recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community and pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
