As a new ANU student, you are required to complete the Rights, Relationships and Respect online training. 

The online learning module will introduce you to core concepts relating to respectful relationships and sexual consent, as well as important information about ANU care and support services.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Awareness of sexual assault and sexual harassment care.
  • The University's zero tolerance approach.
  • Understanding the legal parameters of sexual consent in the ACT.
  • Understanding the social and ethical dimension of sexual consent.
  • Exploring power dynamics and how they impact consent.
  • Awareness of support services available at ANU and within the ACT community.
  • Respectful relationships and safety when working away from campus.

The module will take approximately 40 mins to complete.

If you're a new ANU student and living in ANU Student accommodation you are also expected to attend face to face sessions. It is your responsibility as an ANU student to successfully complete the module and do your part in making ANU a respectful, safe and inclusive learning environment for everyone. This program is part of the University's ongoing commitment to provide you with a safe and enjoyable campus experience as outlined in our Student Safety and Wellbeing Plan.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is Rights, Relationship and Respect?

Rights, Relationships and Respect is a consent and healthy relationships education program for ANU students. The module will introduce you to core concepts relating to sexual consent and respectful relationships, as well as important information about ANU care and support services. In addition to the online module the RRR program will also include face-to-face workshops - stream 2 and 3 - delivered by the Respectful Relationships Unit (see FAQ 3 below).

2. Who is Open Learning?

Open Learning Limited is an educational technology company based in Australia that offers a social online learning platform. They deliver online courses, short courses and online degrees. The RRR online module has been built on the Open Learning platform. Open Learning staff contributed to the design of the course and ANU staff created the content.

3. Are there any additional requirements to complete the Rights, Relationships and Respect course(s)?

Students living in residential halls on campus are required to complete additional face-to-face learning. These sessions are facilitated through the Respectful Relationships Unit (RRU), along with your residential hall.

4. How is ANU evaluating the program?

In 2023, the University evaluated this module to learn about student feedback, engagement and whether the course leads to the intended learning outcomes. The evaluation is being conducted by researchers at the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods on behalf of the Respectful Relationships Unit and the Student Safety and Wellbeing team. Results will be communicated to the university community in early 2024. Data collection to ensure the ongoing quality of this module will commence again in early 2024.

5. Were students consulted in the development of this program?

Students were invited to participate in a review of the online module in December 2022 and January 2023. Student feedback and experiences will also be captured through a comprehensive evaluation program, as outlined above. Version 3.0 will be available from Semester 2, 2023 and will incorporate more feedback.

6. How do I access the training?

The Rights, Relationships and Respect program can be accessed via the link in the top-right of this webpage. You will log in using your ANU log in credentials. If you know yet know your ANU log in details, please contact Student Central at student@anu.edu.au.

7. My log in isn't working, what do I do?

8. Who do I contact for an exemption to the training if I find the content too triggering or traumatic?

9. What happens if I do not complete the module?

If you're a new ANU student and living in ANU Student accommodation and have not completed your training (or received an exemption) by the end of your first semester at ANU, you will be given a formal notice that you have one week to complete it. If you still haven't completed it, you will then be requested to meet with Residence Management. At this meeting you will be given access to a computer and again asked to complete the online module. Non-completion may result in you not being able to return to ANU Student accommodation, in line with Clauses 5.1 and 6.1.1(h) of the Occupancy Agreement and the determination of the Chief Residential Services Operating Officer.

If you do not live in ANU Student accommodation and have not completed your training, you will receive regular email reminders to complete this training by the end of your first semester.

10. Should I attend a face-to-face session?

If you're a new ANU student and living in ANU student accommodation you are required to attend a face-to-face session in addition to the online module, unless you have received an exemption. For most residences these sessions will be held as part of your Bush Week activities. For students from Yukeembruk Village you will be provided information about a new pilot program that you are expected to participate in during second semester. Your attendance will be recorded.

11. What if I miss or cannot attend my face-to-face session?

If you miss your face-to-face session and have not received an exemption you will need to sign up for a follow-up session with the Respectful Relationships Unit (RRU). If you are unsure about when your session is, talk to your Senior Resident or your Residence Management staff.

12. What if English is not my first language?

If you are having difficulties understanding the content of the online training you can contact Student Safety and Wellbeing and discuss support options with a Case Manager, you can email Student Safety and Wellbeing at student.wellbeing@anu.edu.au

13. I have completed the course and would like to talk to someone about it.

15. Who is this training compulsory for?

This training is a requirement for all new ANU students commencing from semester 2 2023. The training is compulsory for students living in ANU student accommodation. Non-completion for new ANU students living in ANU student accommodation may result in you not being able to return to ANU Student accommodation in 2024.

16. Can I access my consent matters certificate if I have completed that course in the past?

The Consent Matters Course is no longer be available at ANU from January 30 2023. Requests for previous completion certificates are no longer held by the university.

17. Do I have to complete this online program by myself or can I complete it in a group?

You can complete the online program in a group setting. Group sessions may be organised in your residential hall. Please reach out to your hall to see if they are organising any sessions.

18. My child is under age, is this program suitable for them and who can I contact for further information and support as a parent/caregiver?

This content is relevant to all students in a university contents. If you are a parent or caregiver please reach out to the Student Safety and Wellbeing Team by emailing student.wellbeing@anu.edu.au to discuss the program and alternative options such as complete the module with a case manager.

19. I have disclosed my reason for an exemption to the wellbeing coordinator in my hall, will I need to speak to the Student Safety and Wellbeing Team also?

We ask in the first instance that you reach out to the Student Safety and Wellbeing Team by emailing student.wellbeing@anu.edu.au, but if you have already disclosed an exemption to a wellbeing coordinator, they can reach out to the Student Safety and Wellbeing Team to lodge your exemption.

20. I am a returning student who has previously completed Consent Matters, do I need to complete this module?

These modules are a requirement for commencing coursework and HDR students. If you are a returning student who has only completed the Consent Matters module in the past, we encourage you to complete the relevant module above, but it is not an essential requirement of your enrolment.

21. How do I track my progress, and access my completion certificate?

If you click the progress bar, it will take you to your progress page. If you can view and download your completion certificate, then you have completed the program.

Please note, due to changes to some of the course materials some of you will be able to view and download your certificate even if your progress bar is at less than 100%. If your progress bar is less than 100% and you can't access your certificate, this means you still haven't completed the course.

22. If I am an existing ANU student moving to a new residence, do I need to complete the training?

No, The new Rights, Relationships and Respect program is for all new commencing students that started a course at ANU from 2023. Existing ANU students are not required to complete the training as the previous version (Consent Matters) was the module in pre-2023. If you completed the Rights, Relationships and Respect program in 2023, you will be able to show your completion certificate as part of your accommodation application. If you are an existing student and have not completed the program before, you are encouraged to complete the program.

23. I am unable to watch the videos in the module

You may have difficulties accessing YouTube content from certain countries. If you are impacted by this, don't worry, you can complete the rest of the modules and watch the videos soon after you arrive in Australia. Please note you have to watch the videos to achieve 100% completion.

24. I am a HDR candidate, do I need to complete the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework program?

If you are a HDR candidate, you do not need to complete the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Rights, Relationships and Respect program. You will receive notification from the University when the Rights, Relationships and Respect in Research program becomes available.

25. I am a HDR candidate living on campus, I have already completed the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework program as a requirement of my tenancy. Do I also need to complete the HDR version?

If you are a HDR candidate living on campus, and you have already completed the Rights, Relationships and Respect program for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Coursework students, you do not need to complete the Rights, Relationships and Respect in Research program. You are encouraged to complete the HDR version however, as there is valuable learning to support your research relationships and experiences that is not covered in the Coursework version. Completing the Rights, Relationships and Respect in Research program is not a requirement of your tenancy agreement.
