LMHS Smooth Sailing Newsletter - Term 4 2022

Principal's Report

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first 6 months as relieving Principal at Lake Munmorah High School. Thank you for your warm welcome and words of encouragement. I feel grateful to be able to reflect on 2022 where the successes exceeded our ambitious goals for learning, teaching, and wellbeing.

Our commitment to academic excellence has been rewarded with some very impressive results, including some of our best NAPLAN scores on record. We are extremely proud of the achievements of our 2022 HSC students. Congratulations to Oliver F for his outstanding results across all courses, including a Band 6 in Mathematics Extension 1, and to Cameron C for her Band 6 in Mathematics Standard 1. 40% of our students achieved in the top 3 bands. A special shout out to our top performing faculties, Maths, English and CAPA. Our focused development in creating and delivering engaging lessons, providing early morning Master Classes and a continued focus on both literacy and numeracy has had a direct impact on our student’s success and continual improvement.

Wellbeing remains at the heart of our school. We have long been recognised for our student services and support programs and hold firm beliefs in educating and supporting the whole student. In 2022 there were thousands of wellbeing and student support interventions recorded which indicates to us that our students and families feel safe and supported to ask for help and that the staff are intently aware of signals that may indicate when we might need to offer help.

To deliver excellence and maintain our positive reputation, we must produce a culture that strives for it. It starts with ensuring every student, staff member, and family is valued. It requires a plan that sets ambitious targets and then implements strategies that establish and support high expectations. It sets an expectation that each person strives to attain their personal best, student, and teacher alike.

In 2023, we welcome the following permanent staff. Krystal Thompson, Belinda Jeffcoat and Sharon Gagan as School Administration Officers (SAO), Kara Neville, Support Unit classroom teacher, Erin Boake, Head Teacher PDHPE and Phil Watson, Head Teacher TAS. We sadly say farewell to Katie Parrott, who was the successful applicant for the Head Teacher English at Swansea High School.

Great schools run on a lot of goodwill from staff, and the staff at Lake Munmorah High School deliver this in spades. I am sure you will agree with me, we have an awesome staff. I feel extremely privileged and honored to lead this hard working and dedicated team.

2023 dates: Year 7, 11 & 12 students return to school on Tuesday 31 January, and Year 8, 9 & 10 students return on Wednesday 1 February 2023.

We have had a fantastic 2022 and I’m sure continued success awaits us all in 2023.

I wish you all a safe and happy festive season.

Staff and Year 12 students celebrating their HSC results with a morning BBQ!

HSIE - Faculty Report

Firstly, a huge congratulations to the Year 12 HSIE students who have completed their HSC exams in Ancient History, Business Studies, Legal Studies and Modern History, and to those who completed the Business Services and Work Studies courses. This program is designed for students who identify as being gifted in drama. Keep an eye out for information early next year in regards to auditions for these programs.

Visual Art

Year 11

Y11 Visual Arts have successfully resolved their portfolio of work for the Preliminary Course. They have made fantastic progress this term in the early stages of the HSC Course, with students planning their Body of Work.

HSC

HSC Visual Arts achieved excellent results for their exams and the practical artmaking assessment for the Body of Work. Congratulations to Phoebe Ward and Mikaelah Nichol for their Band 5 results for the course. Special mention to Cooper Miles, who was competitively selected for the First Class '22 exhibition at the Museum of Art and Culture in Lake Macquarie.

Year 9 & 10

As is tradition at Lake Munmorah High School, we had another successful portrait exhibition. Called “About Face”, the exhibition consisted of entries from our year 9 and 10 Visual Art students. With over 50 entries this year there was a great variety in styles and subjects. Students are also given the opportunity to compete for the public choice award. This year, Lara B. took this title with a magnificent profile portrait. Congratulations Lara!

ART ATTACK

Junior students completed their pet portraits this term with great success. They were also included in the Stage 4 “About Face” art exhibition. The students have developed strong technical skills in preparation for later study in Visual Art and had a great time doing so, meeting every Friday afternoon this year.

Drama

HSC Drama presented outstanding performances for the practical marking team from NESA. The monologue and group performances were a showcase of the dedication, team work and persistence of the cohort. Ms Dyball, Mr Davis and Team CAPA are very proud of their results for the HSC exams.

Mathematics - Faculty Report

Many members of the faculty have started playing basketball in preparation for the Munners Cup match next year. Intensive training sessions both before and after school has seen player improvement across the board.

Eddie Woo visited the school in week 4. He gave a talk to students in the hall, attended a year 9 lesson on Perfect Squares and delivered professional Learning to the faculty in the afternoon. Eddie enjoyed a day filled with plenty of delicious food (catered for by year 11 Hospitality), some friendly banter and many rich discussions on Maths education. He was very impressed with the progress that the faculty has made through the Mathematics Growth Team initiative and commented on the improvement that he has seen since his visit in 2021.

All classrooms in the Maths block had whiteboards fitted to the internal walls in a move that will see a greater focus on student collaboration and engagement by having small groups working together to solve problems.

Term 4 in Mathematics marks the end of our 3 years with the Mathematics Growth Team initiative. Jovannah Knight has been working closely within our faculty building our capacity to write assessment tasks, manage classroom behaviour, write reports and create resources. The faculty has experienced tremendous growth over these 3 years and can’t imagine where we would be without the countless hours of time and effort that she has invested into us. Thanks Ms Knight!

We’ve had a great year and can’t wait to see what 2023 has to offer!

Science - Faculty Report

Science classes this term have been jam packed with a huge number of exciting activities to keep our students engaged, and what is more engaging than food? This term our students have used food to model many different concepts, including using sodium to blow up a watermelon, using choc-chip cookies to calculate percentage yield when mining for resources, using jelly and lollies to model a cell, and using skittles and m&ms to demonstrate our understanding of atomic structure.

Our senior students have begun the challenging task of completing their HSC, and this year we have 4 Year 12 courses running. Many of our students have already completed their first assessment task and have demonstrated the maturity and drive to do well in their HSC. A proud moment of our Physics Year 12 assessment task was when Jessica D was able to correctly calculate and predict where a projected object was going to land. Congratulations Jessica!

Our Stage 4 and 5 classes had their first opportunity to complete the end of year examinations in the hall in a formal setting, which will help to show them examination expectations as they approach their senior years. We were very impressed with how our students conducted themselves during what would have been a very tiring week.

While I am very excited to have returned to LMHS as relieving Head Teacher Science this term after my year away at another school, it is with a heavy heart that I must announce the departure of Mrs O’Connor, who is taking up the Head Teacher Science and TAS role at Maitland Christian School, and Mr Drummond who has accepted a permanent position at Erina High. They have been a valuable addition to the Science Faculty for several years now, thoroughly deserve their new positions, and we wish them all the best in the future. We are also saying a temporary goodbye to Miss Wilton who is taking leave for 2023 and we are looking forward to hearing about her adventures overseas. Another sad departure from our faculty is Mr Harry Wills, our lab technician. Throughout the year he has worked closely with the Science teachers to prepare experiments, clean the lab and be someone we have come to rely on. We wish him all the best in the future. I am also thankful that we have been able to secure Miss Hudson as a permanent addition to our faculty who has already demonstrated a strong passion for teaching and developing positive relationships with her students.

The Science Faculty extends warm wishes to our students, their families and our wider community, and we hope you celebrate the holidays safely, surrounded by loved ones.

English - Faculty Report

The new syllabus is on its way which has provided an excited buzz amongst the English faculty. Staff participated in Professional Learning on the 8th of December and have obtained a wealth of new books to add into our Programs. A diverse range of Cultural Perspectives are reflected in these new resources as well so watch this space.

Year 7

In Term Four Year 7 have participated in a Novel Study with the book Once by Morris Gleitzman. The students were very interested in the protagonist, a young boy named Felix, and his perspective of the Holocaust. It generated rich discussions within the classroom which was also followed with a focus on perspectives with the movie The Book Thief. Year 7 attempted their very first Yearly Examination and their teachers are very proud with all their hard work. We wish them well for Year 8 next year.

Year 8

Year 8 this term completed the unit 'Overcoming Obstacles'. Each class showed great enthusiasm to incorporate their everyday skills and critical thinking to their English studies. Classes engaged with extra-curricular programs after their Final Examination, for most this included Bear Grylls survival games which students demonstrated a loud but enthusiastic response. This unit allowed for the Year 8 cohort to expand within their school community and work together in teams to demonstrate their understanding through their instincts and critical analysis. Looking to next year, we are excited to encourage our Year 8 cohort to continue their enthusiastic approach and dedication to their studies as the new Year 9 Cohort.

Year 9

Throughout Term 4, Year 9 completed their Visual Literacy unit. This required the group to analyse and interpret a variety of texts in the style of picture books. Students focused on a range of visual techniques, including colour, salience, vectors and demand. This allowed for a deepened understanding of each key message presented.

Year 10

This term, Year 10 studied the module, 'Diverse Perspectives'. In this module, students explored a range of texts with a particular focus on cultural perspectives. For the assessment task, students completed the yearly examination, and it was great to see so many students dedicating time in class to prepare their responses and access teacher feedback. Students completed their examination in the Hall, and they demonstrated respect and focus as they completed their responses. These attributes bode well as our Year 10 students move into their senior years, further study, or the workforce.

Year 12 2023 English Standard

Our new Year 12’s have embarked on their HSC journey with heir first module, Texts and the Human Experiences. They have been working hard on their first assessment, a multimodal that connects their prescribed text, Billy Elliot, to a related text of their choosing.

Year 12 Advanced English

Our new Year 12’s have embarked on their HSC journey with their first module, Texts, and the Human Experiences. They have been working hard on their first assessment, a multimodal that connects their prescribed text, I am Malala, to a related text of their choosing.

Next term, students are working towards the comparative study of The Tempest and Hag Seed by Margaret Atwood as they investigate all things Shakespeare.

The class will also be going on a theatre excursion to see Shakespeare on stage which is always a thrill early next year at the Seymour Centre.

Students should be starting to formulate a study plan as we work towards the halfway point of the course. We recommend spending time writing practice essays for the Common Module during Term 1 and seeking support when needed.

Study Tips for Success

Tip 1 # Study plan

A study timetable means that all your subjects are revised and you spend enough time on the subjects that really need attention. Your study plan will work best if it’s a bit fluid as there will always be things beyond your control. It’s OK if you don’t cover everything you want in one session. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Don’t forget to include time for for self-care and positive activities to give you a break such as exercise, mindfulness, sport, music and relaxation in your timetable

Make sure you have priorities and key goals you want to achieve each study session. Flow charts and diagrams will help you visualise your study areas.

Find a study plan template online if you need too, or make one from timetables you already use.

Study groups are a great way of getting support and learning new things.

Tip # 2 Practise your exam technique

It’s great to know your subject but it’s also important to train for the actual exam.

Use old exam papers and practise. This gives you vital training in how to formulate your answers and work with the exam format. You should also use a timer and practise writing your answers with your favourite black pen within a set time. This is critical for when you find yourself in the exam room on the day.

Visit NESA to download past HSC exam papers. You’ll also find the guidelines used by markers, plus sample answers with markers’ feedback.

Tip #3: Reach out to teachers

Niggling doubts in your mind about where you’re going and how you’re studying? Don't be afraid to ask questions in class or check in with your teachers. Show teachers your notes and where you’ve been focusing your studies, so you can get their feedback.

It’s a good idea to get your teachers’ support right up until the actual exam day. They are the experts on the curriculum and the way exams will be assessed. So if you’re confused about what’s needed for an assessment or how best to direct your studies, it’s always better to ask.

You can reach out to teachers by sending them an email, making a time to meet with them, approaching them directly or through online platforms or whatever way you feel comfortable.

Tip #4 - Practise and learn from your mistakes

It doesn’t matter if you don’t always do well in your assessments. What matters is how you learn from mistakes you made and how you apply it to doing things in a slightly different way, just like if you were riding a wave, a skateboard or swinging a racket. Keep practising over and over, identify your weaknesses and figure out how to improve them. Think of assessment as the practice run for the HSC. The HSC is about showing you understand the concepts and preparation. Ultimately doing the work will get you through.

Tip #5: Look after yourself

Both your mental and physical health are really important. Make sure you do plenty of exercise, which will make you feel good about yourself and also fire up your brain cells.

Exercise doesn’t have to be a sport. Just going for a long walk and listening to music will really help. So will eating healthily and drinking lots of water. Use music to help calm you and alleviate stress. You may want to check out meditation or yoga or other calming techniques, like stretching.

Talk to friends or families or any staff that support student well being at your school such as a school counsellor/ school psychologist or teachers you're comfortable with, if you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious or isolated. You can also reach out and talk to someone – available online or phone 24/7.

RISE Class

7 AND 8 RISE 2022

Finally, one full year of school. Both Year’s 7 and 8 have worked hard all year to develop their social and academic skills through the completion of English, Maths, History and Geography class and assessment tasks. We have been able to steer away from the books as we were lucky enough to be equiped with brand new furniture and laptops. The students have definitely enjoyed completing tasks directly onto their desks. We are very proud of each student’s achievements which have been made evident in their final results and reports which were sent home throughout this past week.

This year we chose to celebrate success and friendship by visiting Luna Park. The images shown demonstrate the enjoyment had by all.

I wish each student and their family a very Merry Christmas and hope you all enjoy the holidays.

Sport Report

Interschool Sports Day

One of the highlights on the sporting calendar for this term was the Interschool Sporting Challenge held at Brisbane Water Secondary College and Umina beach. We had students from Years 9 and 10 represent our school over 2 days in a PE/Sports day competing in a range of fun games including Jolleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Touch Football, Kick Tennis, Swimming, Beach Volleyball, Beach Touch Football, End Zone and Beach Flags. Students had a chance to learn new skills and make new friends with students from Terrigal HS, Brisbane Water Secondary College and Lisarow HS. Whilst points were scored, the focus was on having fun and being active and we can’t wait to go back and do it again next year.

TSP Netball

With the knockout competitions all completed for the year, our TSP Netball Team were keen for some more friendly competition this term. We were fortunate enough to travel to Wadalba for a friendly game against the Wadalba TSP Netball Squad. This was another great opportunity to meet students from another school and gave us an opportunity to test our skills without the pressure of a formal competition. We are looking forward to more opportunities like this next year.

Muru Bulbi

One of the highlights of the year is always the Muru Bulbi Cup. This year we had students from years 7-10 compete against Gorokan and Northlakes HS in mixed Netball, Touch, Soccer and Rugby League. Lake Munmorah put up an excellent fight to retain the trophy, narrowly missing out by 1 point overall to Northlakes HS. We had some impressive results on the day, with our senior Netball team narrowly missing the Grand Final win by 1 point. In the soccer we had the Junior Girls and Senior boys win the Grand Final, whilst we also had success in football with the Senior Boys winning the Touch Grand Final and the Girls won the Rugby League Grand Final. An excellent day celebrating culture and the student’s represented our school with great sportsmanship. Looking forward to winning the trophy back next year!

Important Dates for 2023

The Hunter School Sport Calendar will be published here: https://app.education.nsw.gov.au/sport/hunter at the beginning of next term.

Aboriginal Education

The Aboriginal Education team have had a very productive term packed full of programs, activities and excursions. We are immensely proud of our Year 12 cohort and the success they have achieved in completing their HSC. This year we had 11 students attain their HSC, contributing to 21% of the overall cohort. It was wonderful to celebrate with them at the ATAR BBQ, and we sincerely wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

In Year 10, two students obtained Identified School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in Central Coast Health and Hunter New England Health. This is a fantastic achievement and will allow them to complete an apprenticeship or traineeship while at school. This term we have continued with the Walanga Muru, Dream Builders, Ngaliya and the NRL School to Work program. We also had the opportunity to attend Wyong Tafe this term, where we were joined by selected students across Stage 5 and 6. Here we met with Tafe teachers and learnt about some of the courses on offer, receiving a tour and obtaining information on sectors in nursing, aged care, disability, community services and massage therapy. We also jumped at the opportunity to hold a mini celebration for Ms M’s birthday.

Kooloora Preschool

Year 10 Child Studies students had a wonderful time attending Kooloora Preschool with Ms Plane, Miss Kaye and Ms M. Here we met teachers, engaged in a cultural lesson by the wonderful Miss Cara, and had an absolute ball playing with preschool students. Students were in their element and we were exceptionally proud to see them happy and flourishing while obtaining a glimpse into the world of childcare.

Our students wanted me to personally thank and acknowledge Kooloora Preschool for them, with one of our students writing a thank you from the class:

On behalf of the Year 10 Child Studies class and our teachers, we would like to thank Kooloora Preschool. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to socially, practically and culturally engage with the children in such a positive environment. The children and the teachers warmly welcomed us and made our visit such an enriching experience and taught us lifelong skills. Our visit to Kooloora Preschool has inspired some of us to pursue a career in childcare. Thank you Kooloora for the great day.

Moving forward we are hoping to make our visit to Kooloora a regular occurrence.

Koori Games Mentoring Program

Students from Lake Munmorah High School and Gorokan High School who completed the Ngura program last term, ran Koori games with Lake Munmorah Primary School and Gwandalan Primary School. This was a fantastic opportunity for Year 5 and 6 students to meet and engage with high school student mentors.

Boys Yidaki Group

Elijah from Dhinewan Mentoring, has been running Yidaki Group every Tuesday morning. This term our Yidaki boys were privileged to be joined by PE Teacher Brad Gould. Brad has been a tremendous support and mentor to our boys and we are very grateful for him giving up his free time to participate in the program.

Yarn Up

Our end of term BBQ Yarn Up enabled us to celebrate a successful 2022 with students, staff, parents, carers and members of our local community. Thank you so much to our Hospitality students who catered for us with Lemon Myrtle Cheesecakes, and Mr Haslam and Mr Osbourne for their triumphant efforts on the BBQ.

Muru Bulbi Showcase

Our local Muru Bulbi Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) held a Showcase at Gorokan High School this term. Lake Munmorah High School dance girls joined forces with Gorokan High School and Northlakes High School for the Muru Bulbi Showcase, while our very talented Junior AECG president, Charlotte F, performed a musical solo. Charlotte F and Kalarnie H acted as MCs on the night.

What a year it has been!

Firstly I'd just like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Year 9 students on another successful year! It has been such a pleasure to see each and every one of you grow and develop into almost fully fledged Year 10 students!

I would also like to make special mention to our wonderful Peer Support Leaders! Who helped assist with the Year 6 Orientation day this Term. The number of positive accolades i received throughout the day with how confident and helpful these students were to the running of the activities was outstanding!

I wish each an every one of you a safe and happy holidays and look forward to seeing you all ready for start of Year 10 on Wednesday the 1st of Feb!

Year 10 - Mrs Sarah Patterson

Congratulations Year 10 on a great year.

Term 3 & 4 have been a very busy time of year. From yearly exams, minimum standard tests, First Aide & White Card courses, Wellbeing programs, Work experience and the multiple different assessments tasks completed. Your resilience and growth in attaining your ROSA are to be commendable.

This term Year 10 students had the opportunity to select their own subjects for next year. Thank you to students and their parents/carers who have taken the time to think about this carefully and cooperate and coordinate with staff here at Lake Munmorah High.

I would like to wish those students who will not be returning in 2023 all the very best for their future endeavours.

Hope you all have a lovely summer holiday and look forward to 2023.

Mrs Patterson (Patto)

Year 11 - Mr Malcolm Van Drempt

This year our students have also completed their Preliminary courses and have begun their HSC courses. This is an incredible achievement and I congratulate every one of them. This is the final chapter of their schooling here at Lake Munmorah High School and we wish them all the best and support as they undergo their final year.

Unfortunately we will be losing our Assistant Year Adviser, Mrs O’Connor. It will be a loss for us as she is a brilliant teacher and has built strong connections with our students. She is going to another school with a promotion and we wish her all the best in her new position as Head Teacher Science. Replacing her as our Assistant Year Adviser will be Mr Patrick, and we welcome him into the position.

Our senior jackets for 2023 graduates have been a big success. The students look smart and professional in them and can clearly be identified as being senior students. I have offered a second order for students and teachers to take advantage of, however we a still several orders short. Consequently early next year I will be offering the opportunity to try to get enough orders together in order to fulfill the requirements to make an order. I will keep you updated.

I would also like to congratulate our Leadership Team. The seniors did a marvellous job at hosting the presentation assembly and are setting a positive example to all our students here at school. Congratulations to:

School Captains – Ethan Stuart and Zara Blackwell-Aili.

Vice Captains – Ashton Woods and Hayley-Shae Hughes.

Prefects – Kobe Maxted, Tara Forde and Luke Jarret.

Finally thank you to teachers, parents and community members that have supported our students this year. Stay safe over the silly season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Looking forward to seeing you all next year in 2023.

Kind Regards,
