A Landmark Agreement

A Landmark Agreement To Restore Noosa’s Iconic Landscape & Support Indigenous Values.

Noosa’s iconic landscape is set to be restored and protected following a momentous Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) between the Kabi Kabi Peoples Aboriginal Corporation and environmental not-for-profit, Greenfleet.

This landmark agreement represents a vital step toward the revegetation and ecosystem restoration of more than 1,100 hectares of cleared land including former pine plantation in the Noosa hinterland. By re-establishing a native biodiverse forest and creating protected koala habitat, Greenfleet will be building on an award-winning project initiated by Noosa Parks Association, with support from Noosa Shire Council, Noosa Landcare, and the Queensland Government.

Together with the Kabi Kabi people (the Traditional Owners of the Sunshine Coast region in Queensland) Greenfleet (Australia’s first Carbon Offset Provider) will develop a new carbon offset with verified cultural and social co-benefits for the Kabi Kabi people.

Greenfleet CEO, Wayne Wescott stated “we’re thrilled to have reached this agreement with Kabi Kabi. This project has the potential to mitigate the impacts of climate change at an incredible scale - sequestering hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO₂ emissions. To be able to combine that with a direct revenue stream for Traditional Owners, jobs on the ground, and to help bring their young people back to Country by providing capacity and opportunity: it’s a rich and sustaining partnership, and one that I feel very proud of”.

Rowan Foley, who is CEO of the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation, an organisation supporting the project, advised “the reason why Traditional Owners are involved in these types of projects is to look after Country. Greenfleet will support Traditional Owners in looking after Country – so it’s very much a win-win situation here.”

This project will enable individuals and organisations to have a tangible positive impact on both the environment as well as the cultural, social and economic objectives of the Kabi Kabi people.
