Teachers across Australia have told us their workloads have blown out. They are now so stretched that they don’t have enough time to prepare well for class – and student performance is suffering as a result.

In this special Grattan Institute webinar event, our panel of school leaders will discuss the strategies they have implemented in their schools to tackle these problems. Each leader will provide insights into how they have made changes on-the-ground to make more time for their teachers to deliver great teaching.



The discussion will be informed by Grattan Institute’s recent survey of 5,000 teachers across Australia, as well as the reform recommendations in our latest education report Making time for great teaching. And there will be plenty of time for your questions.

Adam Bright

Speaker

Adam has been a principal and teacher in primary schools for more than a decade, in Melbourne and London. He is now at Docklands Primary in Melbourne, where he has established effective literacy instruction by investing up-front in the development of high-quality, shared curriculum resources and lesson plans for literacy and English, common assessment schedules, and instructional coaching for teachers. 

Amy Haywood

Host

Amy Haywood is a Senior Associate in the Education Program at Grattan Institute. She taught English in secondary schools for five years and has written study guides for Macmillan Education. Amy was previously a manager in Deloitte Access Economics’ education policy team. She has a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching from the University of Melbourne, and studied international education policy while on exchange at the University of Oulo in Finland.

Reid Smith

Speaker

Reid is a primary teacher and currently Head of Staffing at Ballarat Clarendon College in Victoria, after some time as Head of Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction. He is also a PhD candidate at La Trobe University, studying the relationship between knowledge accessibility and reading comprehension, a member of the La Trobe Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR) Lab, and Co-CEO of Ochre Education.

Sonia Loudon

Speaker

Sonia was the founding Learning Specialist and is now an Assistant Principal at Elevation Secondary College, a government secondary school in Craigieburn in Melbourne. She teaches Science and leads the implementation of professional learning, curriculum, and pedagogy within the school. Sonia has a Masters degree in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University.

Henry Grossek

Moderator

Henry Grossek is the founding principal of Berwick Lodge Primary School, in Melbourne. Henry has more than 30 years’ experience in school leadership in public schools in Victoria. During that time he has served on a number of educational boards, has written both adult and children’s educational books and currently hosts a popular radio and podcast show, Viewpoints.
