Available Traineeships in 2024

A School-based Traineeship will give you valuable work skills and a completed qualification, which will put you in a good position to apply for further jobs in the future, choose further study options or help you to determine what you may want to do next, after you have completed the traineeship.

We have approximately 14 traineeships on offer to commence in 2024 in business administration, laboratory operations, visitor services, ICT and animal care.

Aboriginal Students

Business Administration Traineeships

Administration/Business Traineeships

BSB20120 – Certificate II in Workplace Skills (formally Certificate II in Business)

We have approximately nine business administration traineeships on offer across a broad range of areas such as Human Resources, WorkSafe, State Roads, Skills Tasmania and Children & Families. Our administrative traineeships are in Hobart and Rosny.

About you

If you like interacting with people and working on computers, and you are interested to try out an office based workplace, then an Administrative traineeship could be a great option for you.

It doesn’t matter if you have any work experience or not, this traineeship will help you develop the necessary skills to prepare you for work, or further study.

What does the job look like?

As an Administrative trainee, you will be introduced to a wide range of practical skills applicable to many business service/office roles. The work will vary between each traineeship, but the sort of tasks you can expect to do include:

  • Photocopying, filing, sorting mail, booking meetings and other administrative tasks.
  • You will be required to provide a level of customer service, as you may need to provide information and direct inquiries from members of the public, clients and employees. Providing this service may be via the telephone, in person or even via email.
  • Using technology, for data entry, reporting, preparing documents/correspondence, processing payments and handling inquiries.

What qualification will I do?

You will be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills (formerly Certificate II in Business) while you work.  This course offers practical skills in a wide range of areas that will help you for any job in the future, including communication skills, time management, technology and working with others.

Which admin traineeship is right for me?

As we have nine administrative traineeships on offer across a wide range of business areas, we recognise this may be a bit overwhelming.  The good news is that you don’t need to be interested in just one or two because when you apply, we will consider you for all the traineeships in your preferred work location. However, if you do have a particular interest in an area, there will be a section on the application form that will ask for your areas of interest.

Information Technology Traineeship

Information Technology Traineeship

Certificate II in Workplace Skills or Certificate III in Information Technology

We have two Information Technology traineeships located in Rosny and Hobart.

About you

If you love working with computers as well as solving problems, this could be the role for you!

This role will help you develop problem solving skills as well as knowledge of computer networking, server operations, security, programming, web development and hardware/software support.

What type of work will I do?

As an Information Technology Trainee your duties will include:

  • Assist with the operational maintenance of technical devices and systems associated with the Division's file management systems and databases.
  • Provide technical support to the Section on day-to-day activities whilst maintaining confidentiality of all information.
  • Assist in continual review and improvement of technical systems, and services.
  • Prepare routine correspondence and communications as required.

What qualification will I do?

As an Information Technology Trainee, you will be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills (in Hobart) or Certificate III in Information Technology (in Rosny) while you work.

Trainee Visitor Services Officer

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one traineeship on offer in the Parks and Wildlife Division at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania.

What does the job look like?

With mentoring and guidance, undertake the requirements of the training plan and qualification to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Assist with the administration and operational maintenance associated with the Divisions file management systems and databases.
  • Provide administrative support to the Section on day to day activities whilst maintaining confidentiality of all information.
  • Answer phone calls, emails and queries from visitors.
  • Assist in continual review and improvement of systems, services and procedures.
  • Prepare routine correspondence and communications as required.
  • Perform any other duties as directed from time to time.

What qualification will I do?

You'll be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills.

Trainee Laboratory Officer

Trainee Laboratory Officer

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one traineeship on offer in the Biosecurity/Animal Health Division at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, located at Mt Pleasant Laboratory, Westbury Road Launceston.

What does the job look like?

With mentoring and guidance, undertake the requirements of the training plan and qualification to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Assist with the preparation of materials and undertake routine technical duties in various AHL sections including water microbiology and parasitology.
  • Record routine performance and calibration results of scientific equipment.
  • Record and monitor consumable stocks and supply.
  • Assist with submissions including labelling of samples, allocation of test procedures and entry of test results.
  • Undertake quality system protocols that contribute to external Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Perform any other duties as directed from time to time.

What qualification will I do?

You'll be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills.

Trainee Wildlife Officer

Trainee Wildlife Officer

Certificate II in Animal Care or Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one Wildlife Officer Traineeship that will be based at Five Mile Beach (which is near the Hobart Airport).

As a Trainee Wildlife Officer, you will have firsthand experience and develop the skills to care for a variety of animals, including through the Tasmanian Orange Bellied Parrot Program.

If you like being outdoors and working with animals, then this traineeship is for you.  Please note, you'll need your own transport as there are no bus routes to get there.

What type of work will I do?

The type of tasks you can expect to do as a Trainee Wildlife Officer include:

  • Assist with the provision of animal care and husbandry, including recording observations, record keeping, feeding, cleaning and maintenance of the enclosures for captive wildlife.
  • Assist with animal handling for routine health monitoring and during veterinary procedures.
  • Contribute to conservation programs.
  • Arrange food/consumables and assist with maintenance of the animal enclosures
  • Complete data entry to maintain correct animal records.

What qualification will I do?

As well as working 1 to 2 days a week, we will support you to complete a Certificate II in Animal Care or Certificate II in Workplace Skills.
