World Red Cross Day

World Red Cross Day

Today is World Red Cross Day, a day recognising the charity’s humanitarian efforts on a global scale. It is held anually on the 8th of May to mark the day that Red Cross Red Crescent founder, Henry Dunant, was born. The day is a celebration of all volunteers and individuals associated with the Red Cross and their tireless efforts, actions and inspiring stories from around the world.

Recently, the Australian Red Cross has created a new initiative called REDxYouth - a youth movement creating innovative ways for young people to take action.

We spoke to one of the members of REDxYouth about their work on digital advocacy for young people around Australia.

Due to COVID-19, REDxYouth has tailored projects towards helping people take action during self-isolation; actions that inspire and nurture them to grow and lead in their communities. REDxYouth provides the tools and activities for which young people have asked.

Now is a very exciting time to take humanitarian action in the most diverse ways possible, shaping what the future of volunteering looks like for years to come.

Due to 90 percent of the population practising physical distancing and self-isolation, there is great potential for productivity during this time. With the support of the Australian Red Cross, REDxYouth has built a useful hub of resources for young people. This includes a Facebook Group called Digital Advocates, a network of like-minded volunteers sharing resources, videos, tips, tools, content and community to help guide them on their humanitarian journey, and to start taking action in their own networks - with family, friends, colleagues and within their communities. Through its efforts, REDxYouth is inspiring a new generation of change makers. Each week, REDxYouth is promoting a different theme with corresponding activities, content and learning modules to help make a real difference.

When a lot of people do a little bit each day, there is great change in the long run. This is a chance to make a real difference with the rest of the REDxYouth network. You are able to meet like-minded, forward-thinking individuals who are just as passionate about creating real social change.

Social change happens with the power of people.
