Bio
Now entering her 15th year as a Nutri-Grain IronWoman, Harriet Brown is a mainstay in elite IronWomen competition. She enters the 2023/24 Nutri-Grain Series with a Wildcard invitation, after narrowly missing out during the Trial round. A proud Victorian, Brown has also won the Molokai to Oahu three times and this year Co-Captained the Australian Life Saving Team to a historic win at the World Lifesaving Championships in Riccione, Italy. When she is not competing and training, Brown is an Exercise Physiologist with a focus on female athlete health and sweat testing.
Harriet, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?
9 years old. I started because my sister joined nippers and I preferred to be involved rather than watch.
Who was your hero growing up in surf lifesaving?
Kristyl Smith because she has such good surf skills and was always a fair racer. She also helped me so much when I was new to the IronWoman series
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
Work hard, enjoy what you do and live by this saying; “if it is to be, it’s up to me.”
Your advice for aspiring Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain athletes?
Work on your surf skills and technique, hard work and persistence pays off and most of all – enjoy what you do!
What do you think about during a race?
I try to think about my skills and pushing my body hard. However, sometimes I get distracted and think about what I’m having for lunch and who I saw in the crowd.
Harriet, what has been a high and low in your IronWoman journey?
Low: Injuring myself in the 2020/21 Nutri-Grain Series and having to have foot surgery which sidelined me for the remainder of the season. I had done the same thing to the other foot in 2018.
High: I have had many enjoyable moments but my highlight would have to be coming back from injury to win the 2022 Nutri-Grain Series.
Do you have any pets?
Just my veggie garden.
Do you have a secret talent?
I play the violin – it’s not really hidden anymore because each year I play a Christmas carol on Instagram.
