Bio
Jy Timperley’s surf lifesaving career begun at the tender age of 8 at Byron Bay SLSC. He found a love for competing, and so the man affectionately known as The Shrimp decided to become a Nutri-Grain IronMan. Timperley was the quiet, unassuming dark horse of the 2020/21 Nutri-Grain Series, but he has taken the Nutri-Grain Series by storm, and has since placed second and third overall. In his spare time, Timperley works casually for the Gold Coast City Council, and loves to go fishing, surfing and camping.
Jy, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?
8. My parents thought it be good to keep me healthy and always have a good group of friends.
Who was your hero growing up in and out of surf lifesaving?
My hero when I was growing up was Ky Hurst. I loved the way he raced and how he always had time for kids like me.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
“Do the work when no one’s watching” – Michael King (my coach)
Your advice for aspiring Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain athletes?
Keep your nose to the grind stone because there is a lot of work involved to be good at this sport. Also to never give up on yourself.
What do you think about on the start line?
Good start, no mistakes, and try to be at the front.
Jy, what has been a high and low in your IronMan journey?
High: Coming second and auto-qualifying for the past two Nutri-Grain Series.
Low: I had a break in 2018 and I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to race again.
Do you have any pets?
A dog, her name is Chewy.
What's your go-to meal the night before a carnival?
A big feed of spaghetti and garlic bread.
