Bio
Lizzie Welborn is a 24 year old professional IronWoman from Sydney, and is one of the youngest IronWoman to ever line up for the Nutri-Grain Series. At only 16 years old, Welborn had a breakout year in surf sports competition, both making her first Nutri-Grain Series and finishing second in the Open Australian Ironwoman. Despite one of her worst Nutri-Grain Series performances last season, Welborn returns to the top-level after a strong Trial Round. A proud New South Welshwoman, Welborn openly bleeds blue and is determined to inspire the next generation of NSW-based athletes.
Lizzie, how old were you when you started surf lifesaving and why?
9 years old – Mum and Dad made me do it because my school friends were doing it. I was scared of the waves.
Who was your hero in surf lifesaving when you were growing up?
I loved Liz Plumbers because she was so dominant, the same as Ky Hurst. They also both had yellow craft and that is partly why I do as well.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
There is so many, I’m so lucky to have so many great mentors.
Your advice for aspiring Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain athletes?
Just give it a go. The young guns are becoming more and more dangerous, you can do it if you believe it.
What is your favourite beach to compete at?
Manly!!!
Lizzie, what has been a high and low in your IronWoman journey?
High: Was battling it out against Lana and Georgia in the 2020/21 Nutri-Grain Series, that was so intense.
Low: Was last year, when I went from one of my best series to my worst.
What do you think about on the start line?
I focus on my breathing.
What do you think about during a race?
It’s a secret…
