care by leading booksellers across Australia.

My name is Gabrielle Wang and I am the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2022 and 2023. I am also a children’s author and illustrator and passionate about inspiring everyone to use their imagination especially by reading lots of books.

Books are magical, providing children with a window through which they can learn about different people and experiences. Growing up as a Chinese–Australian girl, I longed to see myself in books. Now there are so many diverse stories for kids to choose from if we just give them the chance.

Inside this guide you’ll find all kinds of books for children of all ages and stages of reading — fiction, non-fiction and illustrated books. They’re all available in Australian bookshops.

So turn the pages, and help children discover not only books and stories, but new experiences that will inspire and excite their imaginations for many years to come.

A very special book from the 2022/23 Australian Children’s Laureate all about creativity and imagination. Set in post-war Melbourne, Zadie has a secret, special power where sometimes the stories she writes and draws come to life. She has no control over which stories work but she desperately wants a dog of her own, can she write a furry friend into her life for real? A wonderful story within a story and a perfect read aloud for the whole family.

The Raven’s Song

The Raven’s Song kept me captivated from start to end!

It is told in two perspectives — from two characters one hundred years apart. One character is in the distant future, the other in the near future. The novel had intricate, vivid characters and an exceptional plot.

I loved how we got two perspectives so we could really understand what happened and feel like we were in both times. The concept was well thought out and fascinating. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who loves post-apocalyptic genres.
