Queenstown’s biggest new year’s resolution ever

As it draws to a close, 2022 is a year I will never forget - the year the Queenstown Lakes community embraced the vision for the visitor economy to be carbon zero by 2030 (part of the regenerative tourism strategy created by Destination Queenstown, Lake Wānaka Tourism, and the Queenstown Lakes District Council, supported by Kāi Tahu and the Department of Conservation). We have not only had overwhelming support from our community and operators, but in the many discussions that followed the socialisation of our goal – we discovered that many of our operators are already quietly well on the journey. Some of our oldest and most established tourism attractions have already spent more than the last couple of years working out ways to ditch fossil fuel.

I probably shouldn’t be surprised. This is the place where tourism entrepreneurs turn passion into enterprise; where jet boats became synonymous with tourism; where we became pioneers of throwing people off bridges. We are not a culture that sits around and waits for instructions –we’re early adopters and innovators.

We are in a stronger position than probably anywhere else in New Zealand, maybe the world, to implement a goal like this. This is a place like no other and our visitors know this. Demand is back and people are staying longer and spending more.

We did consider that including the transport emissions of our visitors in our plan would be too big an ask. It is phenomenal that the fourth largest airport in the country, Queenstown Airport, is also supporting our carbon zero goal. Of course, many of you are asking – how on earth are you going to do this? We have a three-step approach. Step one was determining if we had enough community support for this big ambitious goal. We have been amazed at the collective will to make change. Now we move to step two where we scope the goal. Step three will be the delivery.

We have nothing to lose, the world knows it needs to decarbonise and our location, a long way from anywhere, means this will affect us. By acting now, I’m confident our international reputation will attract the investment we need to be a world leader.

There is no time to waste and we are moving swiftly to get our governance group in place so we can share our detailed action plan by the end of the first quarter of next year. I know the clock is ticking. My 2030 countdown app tells me how many days we have left (that’s how my brain works these days) - it’s 2940 days. Enjoy your new year and know that change is coming – in a good way.

Divine inspiration for hospo venue

A new Queenstown bistro opens this week and promises to be much more than just a standard brunch spot.

Odd Saint, in the former Halo café building on Earl Street, is the third new venue opened this year by rising local hospo giants Future Hospitality Group.

And after delivering cocktail bar Little Mez and Scandinavian-inspired ice lounge Queenstown Ice Bar, the owners James Ace and Bert Haines, along with co-owners Matt Tobin and wife Jamie Orr-Tobin, have upped the ante again.

“We’re long-term locals who love hospo and eat and drink out a lot,” says James. “Queenstown has plenty of great cafés but we felt there was an opportunity to push the boundaries beyond standard staples. “So, we decided to be a little bit brave, a little bit cheeky and bring a menu to the table that’s a little bit odd!”

The eclectic menu delivers ‘global soul food’ and features dishes such as Hangtown Fry, a nod to California gold mining days, alongside a version of the classic Kiwi big breakfast.

A tasty Clau’s spiced granola is also on offer, as well as Po’Boys, a Louisiana meat or fried seafood sandwich, or Duck Fried Rice.

Executive chef Matt Tobin’s inspiration comes not only from his travels but his Midwest US background, delivering what he calls a “finer diner” menu with an elevated twist.

A custom bright yellow La Marzocco will provide the caffeine hit, with coffee supplied Auckland roasters Eighthirty, while New Zealand-owned Webster’s loose-leaf teas are also on the menu.

And the drinks list features local wins and beers, accompanied by international drops and reimagined cocktails.

Each cocktail is a creative play on the Odd Saint name and location, inspiring drinks like Bibiana’s Cure (a bloody Mary), and a coffee-based sangria fittingly named Drogo’s.

The bistro’s unusual name pays homage to its location alongside St Peter’s Church, in a sunny north-facing spot that’s surrounded by the trees and botanicals.

It’s been a popular café spot for 20 years but has been fully renovated by Future Bars, designed by Studio Collective to create a light and bright bistro-style interior that is vibrant and welcoming.

Studio Collective’s creative director Jennifer Warring says the space needed to cater for a quick ‘drop in’ for brunch, a long lunch, and relaxed trading throughout the day.

“Odd Saint has a vintage vibe with a mid-century modern allure seen in elements like the burnt red finger tiles forming the curved bar top and frosted, brass globe pendants highlighting the bar and servery,” she says. There’s lush outdoor garden seating, for those long afternoon tipples in the sun, and as an added bonus it’s also dog friendly.

The venue, staffed by friendly food-centric personalities, will open from 7am to 3pm with plans to expand into evening service next year. It seats 60 people comfortably inside and the outside dining area caters for approximately another 50.

Earlier this year the company took home the Excellence in People and Culture award at the 2022 Hospitality NZ Awards and its lakeside bar Little Blackwood won New Zealand’s Best Bar. It also operates Minus 5° ICE Bar and Mexican-inspired restaurant Margo’s.

Old arts centre building up for grabs

It’s served the community as both an arts centre and a classroom. Now the former Queenstown Arts Centre building on the corner of Stanley Street and Ballarat St is ready for its next adventure.

Queenstown Lakes District Council is inviting expressions of interest from people who want to relocate and repurpose the 77-year-old wooden building, which was once part of the district’s original high school.

The invitation comes after councillors resolved to remove the building from the Schedule of Assets on 11 August 2022, following public consultation in April and May 2022.

It has been vacant since May, when the arts centre council lease expired.

“We are pleased to be looking for a new home for the building after the community told us they were passionate about its history and did not want to see it demolished,” QLDC Property Director Quintin Howard says.

The single-level building, constructed circa 1945, is made from timber with weather board cladding and a metal roof. Its floor area is 425m2, laid out into studio space, art classrooms and gallery space.

It will be transferred on an “as is, where is” basis, with no warranties, the expression of interest document states.

Results from a recent asbestos survey of the building showed there was asbestos containing material (ACM) found within the building. The ACM was found to be in the pipe lagging.

QLDC have taken the decision to remove the pipes, lagging and other potentially affected materials, including flooring, joists and bearers, which were close to the lagging.

Any structural material and flooring removed will not be reinstated, but will include bracing to enable the building to be transported.

Council plans to use the Stanley St / Ballarat St block in the longer-term for Project Manawa, which will be a community and cultural hub, including new performing and visual arts centres, along with retail and potentially a new council building.

In the shorter term, the vacant land will be used for a temporary boost to town centre carparking.

Many former tenants of the building and neighbouring Queenstown Performing Arts Trust buildings moved to Te Atamira, the new arts and cultural facility at Remarkables Park which opened in May.

“It is important to see the building retained for community use if possible and Council will be evaluating the EOIs against a set of criteria including the new owner’s intended use for the building, location, and how it will benefit the Queenstown Lakes District Community,” Howard says.

WAKATIPU DIGGING DEEP this Christmas

The heart and generosity of the Wakatipu is beating strong in the lead-up to this Christmas with everyone from caring business owners and employees to ordinary families, all digging deep to help those who are struggling.

Local help agencies say they’ve been overwhelmed yet again with the outpouring of generosity from the local community, with increasing needs amid skyrocketing living costs.

“The demand hasn’t subsided since Covid, going up a bit more as Christmas approached,” says Baskets of Blessing operations manager Lee Nicolson. “We’re finding people are physically, mentally and financially fatigued – a lot are all three,” she says.

It’s been hard to keep up with growing demand for food parcels, gift baskets and meal packs for people nominated anonymously on the Baskets of Blessing website (www.basketsofblessing.co.nz), she says.

“The cost of living’s gone through the roof, rent, mortgages, fuel and food, they’ve all gone up horrendously,” says Lee. “People are struggling. It’s the worst I’ve seen.”

Support through donations of money, food, gifts and time, has been absolutely fantastic from all sectors of the community, individuals, businesses and even people from around the South Island hearing about the cause and wanting to help out by donating products. Pre-schoolers have also been doing their bit.

It’s a never-ending pool of need. “The more we get in the more we can help and people can help with anything from products, time and cooking to driving deliveries, sorting and packing, or making crafts like lavender pouches,” she says. Local children are making Christmas cards to put in the gift baskets and Country Club members are knitting baby clothes. “We have ladies making woollen toys – one, two a day, and we really need donations of wool for these.” Other people have made 900 jars of chutneys and jams, truffles and cookies. “Everyone in the community can help in some way, even cleaning labels off jars,” says Lee. “If everyone just spent $10 or $20 on a few goodies, like a few magazines, garden seeds, coloured pens and pencils or something, it would make such a difference.”

Cook-ups are held at the hub – St John’s Presbyterian Church in Arrowtown, Monday and Thursday mornings until 1pm, and people are encouraged to drop off ingredients, or come and help, but to make contact if they’re

coming to help. “We have retired chefs and retired farmer’s wives who are used to cooking for large numbers.” Meals are frozen and delivered to those in need, whether that be due to a bereavement or tragedy, post-surgery, chemotherapy patients, or those simply struggling to pay the bills.

“We’re sending out 300 to 600 meals a week at the moment,” says Lee. “It excites us if we can look after more people and more volunteers are also welcome, particularly males.” A dozen local men already deliver the meals every Thursday.

Local business have been backing good causes with some offering up staff teams to help pre-Christmas.

Salvation Army Queenstown corps officer and director of community ministries Lt Andrew Wilson says there’s been a slight move away from the immediate welfare needs to more social support and mental health needs with continual living cost hikes.

The Army will distribute Christmas boxes and food hampers to 50 to 60 families this Christmas, and Andrew says more gifts are needed for kids, from newborns to 13. “One of the most humbling and rewarding aspects is seeing those nominated come in to choose their family gifts, which they take home and wrap.”

Game Over is holding a can drive to help keep the Sallies’ Food Bank bolstered, offering 50 minutes of arcade time for one can. “This is a fantastic and phenomenal initiative,” says Andrew.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council helped local welfare charities by gifting free tickets to this year’s council Christmas Show – 12 Bells of Christmas at the Events Centre, enabling families to enjoy the two shows on December 11.

Bunnings offered its car park space for local charities to fundraise with various pre-Christmas stalls on December 9. QT Community CATs held a Petting Zoo on site, the Salvation Army ran some games, and Altrusa Service Club operated a Sausage Sizzle.

Happiness House is turning out Christmas boxes to between 30 and 40 nominated families and individuals who are in hardship, says manager Léna Boss.

“The community here is very strong and generous. People are really aware it’s not an easy place to live,” she says. “People are really struggling to pay rent, even food, power and petrol.”

“The support we get at the end of the year with the Christmas Boxes, shows how much the community is looking out for each other,” says Léna. “It’s been a tough year for everyone and we are really grateful that people continue to support one another.”

Businesses have donated vouchers and gifts, as have the local Lions and Altrusa clubs. “Housing is the biggest issue in recent months with higher rents and shortages of accommodation, and even rooms,” she says. “The cost of living is starting to bite.”

So many small businesses, individuals and community groups have pitched in collecting gift donations, or asking employees to bring extra gifts to staff Christmas parties.

This Christmas Boxes Project has been happening for a number of years now and really helps, making the difference for some families in the Queenstown area.

Needs have been so great this year that City Impact Church at Frankton launched an extra call for the church community to fill another round of its annual Christmas gift boxes. Pastor Kellie Watson says the boxes – 52 this year, are gifted to people in the community who’ve had a difficult year or may be struggling. “It’s a highlight of the year for our church community being able to bless others,” she says. A free family community Christmas production was also staged on December 10 and 11.

Minus 5º Ice Bar’s Santa’s Grotto Fundraiser, in the form of a Christmas winter wonderland, delighted the kids on December 10 and 11 too. Santa was on hand to receive wishlists and there was free face-painting with the $5 per child of $10 per family donation all going to Wakatipu Plunket. Print Central, Lakes Weekly Bulletin, Magic Memories and Steamer Wharf all contributed to making this happen.

Have your say on public transport 2052

On-demand public transport, zero-emission buses, ferries, cycling and more are on the agenda as Queenstown looks to the future of how its residents and visitors get around without cars.

Early next year, public consultation opens on a plan for how public transport should evolve in the tourist town over the next 30 years.

The Queenstown Public Transport Business Case, which covers potential spending over the first 15 years, is being created Way to Go, the umbrella organisation pulling together Otago Regional Council, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency (WK).

It has commissioned consultants WSP New Zealand and Australia.

The business case will inform investment decisions in the public transport network, detailing what it could look like by 2052, how it can be decarbonised, where on-demand services should be considered, the future capacity and configuration of bus hubs, and other modes of low-emission, active or shared transport.

It will also consider who should own and operate the services and how they can be funded.

The $2 bus service, operated by ORC, has been dogged by problems over the past year, with driver shortages forcing the council to reduce the timetable and cut services on the fly.

ORC GM Operations Dr Gavin Palmer says the business case is “much broader than the current challenges the sector is dealing with right now”.

“This work ultimately aims to significantly grow the number of people in and around Queenstown using public transport, or walking and cycling, over the next 30 years.

“It will help provide part of the blueprint to support behaviour change, achieve lower emissions, and create a sustainable future for the district.

“It’s a challenging target, so we need to keep working on this.”

The business case is due to be completed in August 2023, with the final outcome presented to ORC but agreed by Way to Go, and contingent on funding.

QLDC Transport Strategy Manager and Way to Go Programme Manager Tony Pickard says the work will ensure the “right investment is made in the right service” for the community.

Some $10.3m will be used to improve the cycle path from along Gorge Road out to Arthurs Point, while $1.5m will further scope options to improve active travel links in Wānaka.

And, for more leisurely cycling, it was confirmed late last week that the 35km Kawarau Gorge Trail has been given the green light after objections in the Environment Court were settled.

It will link Queenstown’s trails network to the new Dunstan Trail between Clyde and Cromwell. Construction is expected to begin next year. The first cyclists could be on the trail by 2025, although it’s expected to be a difficult project to build through the gorge.

Nash backs bold zero carbon move

Tourism Minister Stuart Nash has given a ringing endorsement of Queenstown’s plans to decarbonise its visitor industry by 2030.

Speaking in Queenstown on Friday, Nash said the country needs to move beyond the ‘she’ll be right’ mentality, which “smacks of mediocrity”.

“We go out to the world with this really powerful brand, we need to live that brand, and Queenstown more than anyone else because in the not too distant future you’re going to get customers who are going to look at the air miles and carbon footprint.

“We want to make sure that there isn’t a reason why they don’t come to New Zealand”.

The Carbon Zero 2030 plan has been created by regional tourism organisations (RTO) Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism, backed by Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Nash said he was pleased to see the Government’s calls for RTOs to be ambitious in their destination management plans was being heeded.

“It’s a very, very powerful statement, a very strong inspiration. But it means that we’re going to have to work really hard to make sure we deliver it.

“It means doing things differently. Petrol cars, diesel buses, probably will have to be a thing of the past.”

He’s spoken to industry leaders like RealNZ boss Stephen England-Hall, who’s “very keen to decarbonise RealNZ”.

Nash was asked his views by Xero founder Rod Drury, in the Q&A session of Friday’s announcement of $3m in Government loans for a digital studio at the coming Research and Innovation Queenstown hub, in Remarkables Park.

Drury has championed the potential of autonomous electrical vehicles, connecting Remarkables Park, Queenstown Airport and downtown.

“Queenstown is a good test bed,” Drury said in the Q&A. “The current Waka Kotahi plan is for 14 sets of traffic lights. What? No.

“Why does any tourist need a car? There should be electric public transport, autonomous stuff. We’ve got Glen [Sowry] at the airport who wants to do some

cool stuff, the Porters are open to an electric campus.

“I think we’re all up for some really bold vision stuff and then working out how to fund it.”

Bird flu: 50 million birds

die in record US outbreak

Over 50 million birds have died amid a record-breaking outbreak of avian flu in the United States, according to the Department of Agriculture. This year’s total of 50.54m birds - including chickens and turkeys - has surpassed a previous high set in 2015. Flocks in over 40 states have been affected, more than double the number of states in the previous outbreak. While the risk for humans is low, authorities have warned that safety measures should be taken near birds. The disease is spread by wild birds which transmit the virus through feathers, faeces and direct contact.

JWST spots clouds and even a sea on Saturn’s Moon Titan

James Webb Space Telescope [JWST] identifies clouds on Saturn’s moon Titan; the moon is the only planetary object in the solar system besides Earth with rivers, lakes, and oceans– although they’re not made of water, but hydrocarbons, such as methane. Its unique properties are worth studying in detail, and given that the Cassini mission is no longer exploring Saturn, is up to telescopes to keep an eye on it. Both JWST and the Keck observatory here on Earth have now studied the frigid world, with incredible results.

The two world-class telescopes were able to see the seas of Titan, as well as clouds. JWST images were taken on November 4. The team noticed two clouds in the atmosphere near the North Pole of the moon. Researchers were interested to know if they could track the evolution of these clouds; they were able to secure observing time at Keck, and saw them again 30 and 54 hours later.

CAIRO (AP) — Iranian authorities executed four people Sunday accused of working for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, the state-run IRNA news agency said. Three others received lengthy prison sentences. IRNA said the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard announced the arrests of a network of people linked to the Israeli agency. It said the members had previous criminal records and tried to disrupt the country’s security.

Israel and Iran are regional arch-enemies and Iran occasionally announces the detention of people it says are spying for foreign countries, including the United States and Israel. Tehran does not recognize Israel and supports anti-Israeli armed groups across the region, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

b. the area from the foreshore to an outer boundary formed by and including Lake Esplanade, Lake Street, Man Street, Memorial Street, Stanley Street, Coronation Drive, Park Street to the Lake Whakatipu foreshore area directly adjacent to Queenstown Gardens, Boundary Street;

c. Queenstown Recreation Reserve adjacent to the Memorial Centre.

The temporary alcohol restriction will include the following areas for Wānaka: a. the whole of the Lake Wānaka foreshore area from Sunrise Bay/Edgewater to Penrith Park;

b. the area from the foreshore to an outer boundary formed by and including Meadowstone Drive, Stone Street, Golf Course Road, Macpherson Street, State Highway 84 and Ardmore Street.

CELEBRATING OUR multicultural community

The month of October was a busy one for our multicultural communities with an array of events happening throughout the district. A combination of two years of Covid uncertainty coming to an end and the stars aligning with various cultural events, which created the melting pot of programmes. Moving forward, the Welcoming Communities of Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and the respective community leaders are keen for celebrations to become part of the annual calendar.

Queenstown Lakes is a diverse tapestry of migrants from all over the world as well as people coming from other parts of Aotearoa and it’s important to the council to be recognising and celebrating this.

QLDC joined the Welcoming Communities programme to support newcomers to the district and help new arrivals and groups to flourish – the aim is to assist them in participating in economic, civil, cultural and social life within the region.

October was particularly busy and included the Diwali Festival, the Subcontinental Community Cricket Festival, Korean Thanksgiving Day, Queenstown Multicultural Festival and the Remarkables School Cultural and Heritage Week. Welcoming Communities Coordinator Silvia Dancose was thrilled to see everyone coming together and wanting to celebrate their respective holidays and events. She says the past year has brought a strong connection with culture and identity and has seen a growing number of newcomer communities host events to share their culture with the wider community.

Silvia’s role started in 2021 and the focus of this year has been to empower and support migrant communities so they can thrive and have a sense of belonging in our region. The next task she’ll be tackling is to work with the two Welcoming Communities advisory groups, which are based in the Whakatipu and Upper Clutha and develop a Welcoming Plan to ensure our district is more welcoming and inclusive for all.

I’m delighted to see our community representatives taking leadership roles in organising these cultural festivals and celebrations. The events that culminated in October happened organically and we want to help elevate these types of events and empower our communities”, says Silvia.

On October 1st the Korean community celebrated Chuseok, or their Thanksgiving Day, which they have been commemorating in Queenstown since 2013. The day moves each year but fell between 28 and 30 September in 2022. In pre-covid times, the community would traditionally get together twice a year to celebrate Chuseok and Korean New Year. Hanna Kang is a member of the Korean Association of Queenstown and said that this year’s event was particularly successful.

“About 100 people gathered to share in the celebration – I didn’t expect 100 people, but people came to share food and play traditional games – especially other ethnic groups who like Korean food. The multicultural event was a really meaningful time to share in each other’s culture in Queenstown through harmony and meeting. It was a very nice event.

“In 2023 Chuseok will be held in late September or the middle of October. I hope that more Koreans and other ethnic groups will participate to understand each other’s culture. Queenstown is a very young town, which is why the younger generations interest is important in determining the future of each community. I want to make our community big on emphasising that point,” says Hanna.

Queenstown’s Multicultural Festival fell on October 8th where many communities came together from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, China, Thailand, Nepal, Taiwan and Korea to create the Multicultural Festival that was in the Memorial Centre. Keiko Okumura from the Japanese Family Society would love to see the event grow and for more communities to become involved.

“It’s going to be quite challenging to make it any bigger however, and we need to think about if it would stay at the Memorial Centre, about how to invite more groups, and if it’s bigger then we’ll need to get funding. There’s many challenges for the next one, but we are all positive moving forward.

“Our community was so happy because we had more hands at the event – we have similar events each year and we have to do it all by ourselves, but this time each group was taking charge of a section. We have just booked the Event Centre for November 2023 and I want to do food, a stage with cultural performances, workshops or showcasing with cultural booths. I need to talk to the new community members – I want to do the same but invite more cultures. I love to meet and talk to people in the community, go for a coffee catchup –says Keiko.

The weekend of October 22 and 23 hosted the Sri Lankan, Nepalese and Indian communities in the Subcontinental Community Cricket Festival. The event included lots of cricket, traditional food, and a cultural evening that included performances. The event had a focus on mental health for the communities involved.

Sri Lankan Association of Queenstown member Kevin Peiris was happy with the event’s success and hopes it will return next year.

“The Cricket Festival was really successful. It was the first time, and many people were involved with it. The whole purpose was something good for everyone, and everyone chipped in, and they ended up helping and making it all possible. Everyone was laughing, especially during the cultural evening that was held after the cricket matches. It was a beautiful time – everyone sharing food.

“We will be having a few more events in the next year, – things like culture and food – we have a Sri Lankan New Year where we invite people to see the cultural dances, dresses and food, all things we might showcase for locals in Queenstown to join in so we can share where we’re from and what we can do for the community overall,” says Kevin

Queenstown’s Nepalese Society was established in early 2022 and President Hari Sapkota thinks that it’s important for all the communities to build relationships and get involved with one another. He enjoys sharing his food and culture with everyone and wants to represent their community as much as possible.

“We got a chance to play cricket with the others and it helped us to get connected to one another. We had five or six events this year including Nepalese New Year, and in 2023 will do the same again. We just want to bond with each other and, if we organise some events and invite other communities, we want them to come and see how we celebrate and we would be glad if they also did the same for us. This way we can understand each other because we’re living in the same community.

“We are always open to participate in any events and sports organised by other communities. I believe it will help to nurture a sense of wellbeing in our community and strengthen our relationships within the multicultural communities’ members,” says Hari.

Diwali Night Festival was held on 29th October, it’s India’s biggest holiday of the year and is a festival of lights that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. Bhartiya Samaj Queenstown Charitable Trust represent the Indian community in Queenstown – it started in 2013 when members of the community would meet up in one another’s houses. The Diwali celebrations have grown in that time moving from a church to an Indian restaurant, and in 2017 Skyline. The Skyline event had 200 tickets available which sold out, and the community received many messages after the fact from individuals who were sad to have missed it.

President of the Trust, Mangal Behal, says that “The showcase of our event is not only for the Indian community, but for all cultures. Every time we have our Diwali Festival, our focus is not only the Indian community but to get everyone there. In 2019 when we did Diwali, we saw around 1500 people all mixed up from different communities there. In 2020 and 2021 we couldn’t do the Diwali Festival, so this year we had almost 2000 people, and they enjoyed each and every moment and they were all from different communities.”

At the moment they are staging five events per year in addition to activities and meetings. Next year they want to introduce wellbeing dance classes and also hope that the Diwali celebrations can grow and become an outdoor and inclusive event on the streets of Queenstown.

“I received a lot of nice messages – there was a friend of mine from China and she said that it was something very different and ‘The event you guys organised was unreal, there were so many good vibes in the Events Centre.’ She dressed up in Indian dress and her kids dressed up too, but she felt that being from China, she belonged to the community while she was there. The focus is always to have everybody under one roof – exchanging culture and adapting values,” says Vicepresident Poonam Sethi.

October was rounded off with the Cultural and Heritage Week at Remarkables Primary School. The first time the event was held was in 2018, with the second in 2020 cancelled due to Covid. This year’s event had a great turnout and is planned to continue every two years, but it may move to the winter months.

Cath Hudson, ESOL Teacher at the school, wanted to put the event on as the school has had a lot of migrant families starting in the last few years.

“We really wanted to try and make more of a community event, so through the school Facebook page and newsletters, we reached out to parents and communities to see if they would be able to come into the workshops. It was brilliant – we had about 37 different nationalities represented with parents and grandparents coming throughout the week to a whole variety of workshops. We wanted to bring our community together – we had noticed a little bit of unkind behaviour in the

playground and in the classrooms. We just wanted to support all of our students and teachers – we’ve been able to have conversations around prompting acceptance, respecting differences and valuing diversity,” says Cath.

Now the borders have reopened we’re welcoming more people to Queenstown with more and more families moving to Queenstown. 2023 is shaping up to be a big year for the Welcoming Communities and each of the respective communities. Having regular multicultural events throughout the year would be a welcome addition to the calendar and will highlight the interwoven communities within Queenstown. Toomey named Chef de Mission for Winter Olympics

New Zealand CEO Marty Toomey has been appointed Chef de Mission for Milano Cortina 2026.

Toomey led the NZ squad in Beijing 2022, where the team created history by winning New Zealand’s first ever Winter Olympic gold medals.

“Milano Cortina is fast approaching and I’m really pleased to have another opportunity to contribute to New Zealand’s success through the role of Chef de Mission,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to helping the team to build on the success of Beijing 2022 as the Winter Olympic Games head back to Europe.”

A unique leadership role, the New Zealand Team Chef de Mission champions the needs of athletes inside complex and high-performance Games environments.

The role ensures the New Zealand Team promotes athlete mana, wellbeing and performance at all times throughout the Games period.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) has also named Olympian and five-time Commonwealth Games medallist Nigel Avery as its Chefs de Mission for the next Summer Olympic Games. Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Paris is set to host 10,500 athletes from 206 nations, in July and August 2024.

The NZ team will compete in equestrian, to rowing, rugby sevens, swimming, canoe sprint, sailing, athletics, cycling and more, while New Zealanders can check out the action in new urban sports including skateboarding, sport climbing, breaking and 3x3 basketball.

“The Paris Organising Committee has some pretty amazing plans in the pipeline,” Avery says. “The Opening Ceremony is set to take place on the river Seine with athletes to be transported through the heart of the city on barges as hundreds of thousands of spectators line the banks of the river.

“We’re also expecting fantastic competition at iconic venues and we know our team will be giving everything to make New Zealand proud and add another chapter to our sporting history.”

BOB ROBERTSON

WHEN THE HEAT IS ON…

One of the longest-serving volunteer firefighters in Otago and Southland, after 60 years Bob Robertson’s got a wad of medals that would be the envy of any Olympic athlete. Even now at 83, he’s still a member of the Queenstown Volunteer Fire Brigade, which he led as a dedicated chief for 27 years, fighting some of the Wakatipu’s most notorious and devastating blazes.

Born in Queenstown in 1939 – the year World War II broke out, Bob has little memory of its effects. “Everybody had to close their blinds when the lights went on in case the enemy spotted us,” he recalls. Apart from that his childhood was idyllic, playing cricket in Lower Beach Street, then a gravel road barely ever graced by a vehicle.

Fishing, deer shooting, rugby and rowing filled the time, with Bob and his Lightweight 4’s crew winning the NZ Championships. “We’d train on the Kawarau River below Kawarau Falls,” he says. “We’d run home into Queenstown, while our coxswain, ‘Chippie Muir’, drove the Ray Perk’s truck back into town at just 14.”

PC meant police constable back then, not politically correct, and health and safety rules didn’t exist. There was just one cop – an Irishman. “You could walk through town with a rifle on your back. It was never a problem.” Bob and his mates push-biked to Bob’s Cove, Lake Dispute and Moke Lake deer shooting, rifles over their shoulders.

Having run away from the Convent School as a youngster, Bob was still eager to leave after two years at high school so he took on a five-year building apprenticeship with Allan Walker. Timber wasn’t treated back then, rough sawn, and at 15 Bob recalls giving the foreman, Jack Spence, a bit of cheek. “He pushed me off the scaffolding and

so I got up and walked home.” Bob owned his own building business locally for 32 years.

Bob’s great grandfather J.W. (‘Daddy’) Robertson was Queenstown’s first mayor, after tossing a coin to decide the mayoralty with Bendix Hallenstein, who’d eventually become the second. Bob’s father was the local town clerk, later taking over the Mountaineer Hotel where the family lived. Barman Tom Luckie convinced Bob at 19 to join the Volunteer Fire Brigade and with the station then at the corner of Shotover and Brecon Streets it was a 20 second sprint when the hand bell signalled the alarm.

Bob competed in National Firefighting Competitions all over NZ – huge events with up to 80 teams. The first was in Onehunga in the late 1960s and the small town boys got lost. “We needed a ride back to our hotel so we waved down a linen truck and rode in the back with the dirty laundry,” grins Bob.

There were about 30 call-outs a year – actual fires, unlike the masses of hotel false alarms now. Sprinkler systems and fire alarms didn’t exist. Bob’s attended some spectacular fires over the years – the White Star Hotel, destroyed in the 1960s, Trans Hotel, and the devastating Coronet Peak base building fire in July, 1986. “L&M Mining met us at the Skippers turn-off with their four-wheel drive and it was too icy so they took us up.” Water froze in the hoses and soda gas cylinders exploded through the roof with an “almighty bang”, sending TV reporter Michael Lynch, alongside Bob, scarpering. “The top floor was pretty much alight and there was no water, no hydrants, there.” The Arrowtown Brigade saved the day with knowledge of a nearby dam.

One of the first locally to train in Wellington with breathing apparatus at 26, Bob admits it was “a bit scary” heading into the loud noise of the White Star fire with Brian Smith. He was married by then to wife of more than 50 years, Fae. “I used to run to the station barefoot then.”

The Apex Chalets swimming pool was pumped dry fighting a fire there in 1974, all while Fae was in the maternity home delivering their daughter. The brigade gradually became first responders, attending all manner of accidents and emergencies, and he’s seen his share of sadness and tragedy. However, there have been lighthearted incidents too, cats up trees, and other unusual call-outs on which Bob’s staying mum.

Plastic over trousers issued to the firefighters way back sparked quite a national response. “They got the message,” says Bob. “Normally we wore heavy woollen clothing for protection.” Helmets weren’t flash in the early days either. “Johnny Rankin’s helmet melted on top of his head once here.”

Awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for 50 years of service in 2009, he’s also been awarded the Fire Service’s prestigious Double Gold Star, a Paul Harris Fellowship Award – the first firefighter to receive it, a Local Hero’s Medal, and many other Fire Service medals. He’s also a Life Member of the Queenstown Brigade.

While still a brigade member, Bob retired from firefighting at 78, but sometimes it’s hard to bow out after more than 60 years. He still has a pager and if it’s an interesting call-out he likes to tune in.

Big fine for jetboater

Jetboater Tim O’Sullivan has been slapped with a $1500 fine and a conviction for his December 2021 traverse of the Nevis Bluff rapids.

The Alexandra farmer was in Queenstown | Tāhuna District Court last week after pleading guilty to charges brought by Queenstown Lakes District Council for breaching the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2018. He’d perhaps have struggled to beat the charge - the descent through the Grade 6 rapids, a restricted area of the Kawarau River with water churning at a 250m3/s flow rate, was filmed and uploaded to YouTube, where it has been viewed almost 50,000 times. It’s believed to be the first descent of the Nevis Bluff rapids in a jetboat.

Queenstown Lakes District Council hopes the case acts as a deterrent to others and encourages people to stay safe in the water this summer.

QLDC Regulatory Manager Anthony Hall says: “The bylaw is very clear about restricted areas where boat operators cannot operate a powered vessel without first obtaining an exemption from QLDC.

“The rule is there to protect all users of our rivers and lakes and we enforce it rigorously.

“Whilst we’re satisfied to achieve a successful conviction in this case, we hope it will serve as both a reminder to make smart choices in and around water and a deterrent to others from making similar, very dangerous choices.

“We’d encourage local boaties to mention it to any visitors they speak to over summer or to their mates who may be considering taking unnecessary risks.”

Halls says using a powered vessel such as a jet boat in any restricted areas, including the Kawarau River, is first and foremost a significant safety issue.

That section of the Kawarau River is considered hazardous for both powered and non-powered vessels to use at the same time and is currently only

available to passive users (non-powered vessels) unless a prior exemption is obtained by QLDC.

Hall says obtaining an exemption through Council to operate a powered vessel on this section of the Kawarau River ensures that the correct safety precautions are in place to consider other users occupying the river at the time.

“Council’s guidance on safe boating including links to the bylaw is published widely and there is clear signage in place on these sections. It’s well understood by most boaties and there really is no excuse for taking risks and putting others in danger.”

QLDC is the regulatory authority for waterways across the district and promotes their safe use through the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2018 and Maritime Act 1994.

We’re off to dance with the wizard

The end of year performance for the Wakatipu Conservatoire of Classical Ballet will be The Road to Oz, which will consist of three performances this weekend. Taking inspiration from the classic 1900’s Wizard of Oz tales, it will feature students ranging in age from three-years up to adults performing an array of different dance styles.

This time of year is a busy one for the Conservatoire as they have multiple performances – this year they were involved with the Queenstown Christmas Show’s performance of the 12 Bells of Christmas, meaning they had two major shows in two weeks. The Road to Oz is one of the biggest productions of 2022 for the dance troupe, and one that includes many of the students enrolled.

Owner, Theresa Swain, is a classical ballet teacher and is also the Production Designer and one of the choreographers for the show. Theresa studied classical ballet and modern dance in Dunedin from the age of six. She grew up learning all aspects of staging a full-scale professional production.

“This particular version that we’re doing is our take on all the different books from The Wizard of Oz saga. So, we’re not actually following the true story. Basically, you’re joining Dorothy and her friends on her exploration of Oz. It’s an absolute visual spectacular – we use full professional lighting done by TomTom Productions, and it’s a full stage, professional production. It’s a spectacle with ballet, jazz, contemporary dance and musical theatre. There’s over 100 students and four choreographers,” says Theresa.

The show runs for two hours and rehearsal starts shortly after their exams – usually in September. Students rehears during their regular class hours, with rehearsals ramping up closer to the date of the performance. In addition to teaching, Theresa really enjoys designing and making costumes, and she’s really excited with how everything has come together for the performance.

“Straight after our exams the students start working on the choreography. We’ve been working on costuming since the beginning of the year and we’re already putting together next year’s production now. So, we’re always over a year ahead of ourselves. It’s been a year in progress. I’ve got some students that are doing contemporary, jazz and ballet, so they can be rehearsing up to five times a week. We try to restrict it – we don’t want the kids there every day. Closer to the show, like at the moment,

there’s a few extra rehearsals and they’ll get stage time at the Memorial Centre next week.”

TIGHT FIVE – PAUL DAVIES

Paul Davies creates elegant and airy paintings that draw from some of the biggest names in Mid-Century architecture. There is a post-war optimism to Davies’ work, but, alongside the glamour of his pool scenes and iconic architecture a slight eeriness sneaks in. Across a practice that explores concepts like reproducibility and uniqueness, utopian imagination, and immigration, a rich and alluring body of work reveals itself to have hidden depths.

When did it click?

The magic of seeing a blank piece of paper appear with an image in a photographic developing bath has never left me since I first saw it as a kid. That fleeting moment of the process remains integral to the concepts behind my practice today. My dad was an amateur photographer and he’d build makeshift darkrooms in the various houses we lived in. He still has the black and white prints of Central Otago landscapes taken when we lived for a time in Oamaru.

Your practice has a distinct Mid-Century feel, where does your love of this aesthetic come from?

Although I preferred painting throughout school, I majored in sculpture at University. Our class studied site-specific artwork that incorporated the built and natural environment and this lead me to look at the utilitarian qualities of Mid-Century architecture. For example, architect R.M. Schindler and his furniture pieces that could be placed in different orientations to serve different functions. My work explores the way these designs, and others like it, were made for mass-production. In a similar way, I employ hand cut stencils for example, to repeat subjects across photography, painting, and sculpture.

Talk us through the process of making your work and why is this important to your practice?

I begin with photographing source material, either something I’ve stumbled on, or, during an artist residency likes the ones at Cite des Art Internationale in Paris and the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in Arizona that I’ve been part of. I print the images and cutout details by hand, then collage and place them atop the canvas, painting through the cutouts to build up the image layer by layer. This approach is a way to create the shape and feel of a place, rather than depict a direct likeness of an exact location.

You are Australian but lived in LA for a significant period, did the infamous Los Angeles Noir seep into your soul and your art?

Much of the work I made in Los Angeles focused on the contrast between the seemingly breezy nature of Southern California and its dark flipside represented in movies and books such as Joan Didion’s The White Album. I began to make work outside my studio, under direct sunlight, producing a series of camera-less photographs depicting silhouettes of Mid-Century architecture. Some of these were shown at Schindler’s Fitzpatrick-Leland house in the Hollywood Hills, it was crazy to see these works inside the architecture that inspired them.

What’s your biggest barrier to being an artist?

I love being in the studio and working away on my own. But, for me painting is a slow-burn process and it takes time to get in the flow. A lot of planning goes into the early stages of a painting and the overall concept for a series of work. The actual painting part is methodical and more about distilling this information, so the challenge is remembering to slow down and work through the process.

Arrowtown “Art Before Dark”

Arrowtown Creative Arts Society is behind the first “Art Before Dark” Arrowtown open gallery event being held next week. This is a similar format to the popular First Thursday events in Queenstown and is a familyfriendly opportunity for art enthusiasts and locals to visit seven galleries in Arrowtown, all within a short walking distance of each other.

Digital studio planned for tech hub

A multi-million-dollar state-of-the-art digital studio will be one of the key tenants of the Remarkables Park’s Research & Innovation Queenstown (RIQ) hub.

The studio, by company Target3D, will be a multi-use environment that includes virtual production and motion capture capability, in harmony with Unreal Engine, the software that runs many of the world’s most popular video games.

Backed by a $2 million Government loan from the Queenstown Economic Transformation and Resilience Fund (QET Fund), it will be available to filmmakers, game designers, content creators and educators, plugging the skills gap in an evolving industry.

Shannon Dowsing, Director of Target3D New Zealand, said the company has studios across the UK and Europe and has created studios for elite education institutes including LIPA (Paul McCartney’s former school) and Cambridge University.

It has been looking to establish a studio in New Zealand but there wasn’t the ecosystem, workforce or infrastructure, until this opportunity in Queenstown.

Target3D uses its studios for its own projects, such as facial and body tracking for One Direction star Liam Payne’s augmented reality performance at the 2021 Bafta Awards.

But it also aims to give indie arts, creative and smaller commercial producers access to the same techniques, technology and opportunity as the bigger players.

“Target3D is a company that focuses on the availability and ease of access to technology,” Dowsing says.

“We’re not trying to be Wētā [Workshop], or the best in the world at GFX or post production. We’re not trying to be the 100% consumer and user of our studios because we know there’s a lack of resource and availability of studios.

“We relish the opportunity to put new tools in the hands of talented storytellers and help bring their visions to life, through cutting-edge technology.”

The NZ film industry is mainly focused on $5m to $20m productions, rather than the $100m-$300m range, for example.

“That’s what a small studio with an agile team can cater to.”

The technology includes motion tracking solutions for virtual production, VR & AR, robotics, biomechanics, animation, VFX, gaming, training and simulation, 3D scanning and haptics.

The RIQ building is a stone’s throw away from Wakatipu High School and the SIT campus, and education and career pathways are a huge part of Target3D’s goal.

Its sister company Rāngai is an active participant of the government’s reform of vocational education (ROVE) and as a former Gisborne District councillor Dowsing says he’s keen to focus on creating opportunities for locals.

While Queenstown’s international draw will attract clients, the hope is that the talent can be developed locally and nationally.

Research & Innovation Limited director Johnathan Chen says he made a cold call to Dowsing 18 months ago, which he expected to last five minutes but turned into an hour-and-half conversation.

“We wanted to attract and enable world class research and innovation activities in Queenstown, using RIQ as a platform, and this studio is a great example as it creates multidisciplinary collaboration to provide innovative solutions across a number of industries, such as film, gaming, IT, tourism and even future cities,” Chen says.

The screen industry is employs 16,200 New Zealanders and contributes $3.3 billion to the economy annually.

Economic and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash says the studio will provide diversification within the screen industry and for the district.

“This will provide access for filmmakers, game designers and television producers to the latest technology,” Nash says.

“It also aims to encourage screen production companies to remain in the district for longer periods, therefore increasing district and regional spend.”

Loaded with potential

Queenstown hospitality software business Loaded plans a global expansion, after raising of $3.25 million via a combination of equity and debt.

CEO Richard McLeod says an initial entry to Australia is planned for early 2023 for the company, which helps hospo business manage staff and stock.

“With 900 customers at home who have demonstrated significant profitability and efficiency improvements when adopting Loaded and very few competitors in the market globally – we’re pretty excited about the opportunity ahead.”

On Friday, it was announced the company has landed a $1.25 million loan from MBIE through the Queenstown Economic Transformation and Resilience Fund (QET Fund) which is administered by Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit.

“The support from MBIE on top of the significant equity raise means that we are in a position to invest further in building our product and development team almost entirely in Queenstown which is important to us as a company founded by born and bred Queenstowners,” McLeod says.

Invest South, a local investment fund, is the major participant in the capital raise and will also appoint a director to the board of Loaded.

Other local private investors have also invested directly and through the Mainland Angel Investors network.

“We are delighted to have found a company of Loaded’s calibre right here in Queenstown and strongly believe in the journey they are on to improve the performance of the hospitality industry as a whole, which has never been more important than it is now,” Invest South CEO Prue Halstead says.

Loaded was originally developed as a central management system for Cook Brothers Bars which famously purchased the Captain Cook Tavern in Dunedin when Loaded founders Richard McLeod and James Arnott, both of Queenstown, were in their fourth year as university students.

“Cook Brothers Bars expanded into a nationwide hospitality group, which James is still at the helm of today,” McLeod says.

“I guess there is some irony in the fact that today our ambition is to seriously impact the performance of the entire hospitality industry globally, given our complete lack of experience and the somewhat loose style in which we operated as 21-year-olds.”

Coronet Peak raises $5,600 for Happiness House

Coronet Peak have held their annual Happiness Tree Campaign – a fundraiser for Happiness House where they cut down wilding Pine Christmas trees in exchange for a minimum $25 donation to the charity. This is the sixth consecutive year they have run the fundraiser, with all those involved volunteering. In previous years they would sell the trees from Queenstown Airport customer carpark, but this year they took orders online and are delivering them straight to your door.

Sales for the trees closed at midnight last Wednesday, with the trees delivered on Friday 9 December. In total they sold 181 trees this year and raised a total of $5,600, which is an improvement on last year. In 2021 they had to cap the number of trees they were able to sell due to struggling to find ones that were appropriately sized, which isn’t necessarily a bad problem to have as it shows that the population of wilding pines is decreasing. The total number of sales for 2021 was 70.

“Fortunately this year, the trees have grown again and we’ve managed to find enough to harvest and deliver. This delivery model is much better than inviting people to come and buy them. It’s about giving everyone the ability to have an actual tree while supporting the community and removing wilding pines,” says Coronet Peak Assistant Ski Area Manager, Mark Sommerville. Excluding last year, they generally sell between 150 and 250 trees each year. They remove a total of between 300 and 400 from the landscape annually. Many of the volunteers are NZ Ski staff, but they’re always looking for volunteers.

“It’s a real good vibe when you’re up there harvesting trees when you know that not only are you removing wildings from the environment, which are a pest, you’re also raising money for local community people who need a little bit of an extra boost at this time of year.

“The support that Happiness House provides everybody in the community, you don’t need to be a resident of Queenstown, you may only have been here a couple of days, but you can still use their support services. They do some amazing work in the community and they’re one of the only charitable organisations in the district that offer free counselling. What they do and their ethos aligns extremely well with the Happiness Tree Campaign,” says Mark.
