Term 2 2021 SO MUCH TO DO, SO LITTLE TIME! This is an extra special term for us, with Boarders Week bang in the middle. We will be out and about and ready to celebrate our Boarding heritage and all those who make our lives in Boarding brighter. And, either side of this, embrace and enjoy the program of fun and fabulous activities that have been put together especially for you. We want you all to participate and get the most out of the opportunities on offer – remember, this is our year of ‘Having a Go’. Think about ways in which you can challenge yourself. Never been to an art gallery? Now is your chance. Fancy trying your hand at thrifting? Now is the time! And don’t forget, let us know if there is something that you would love to try that we haven’t included. Let the adventure begin!

f course, our baking afternoons are all about having O fun and enjoying good food. This week also provides us with a history lesson, the chance to get to know our Knox Boarding Buddies a little better and the opportunity to make someone else’s day a bit brighter. Anzac biscuits have long been associated with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) established in World War I. It has been claimed that biscuits were sent by wives and women’s groups to soldiers abroad because the ingredients do not spoil easily, and the biscuits kept well during naval transportation. Your challenge is to see who can make the best Anzac biscuit. And, the competition doesn’t end there! The biscuits will be sold at Saturday sport and funds will be donated to Legacy. Stay tuned for the results!

ome and enjoy Super Rugby action as the NSW C Waratahs return to Bankwest Stadium for their final round match of the season against the Melbourne Rebels. They will be taking on a Melbourne Rebels side featuring the likes of Matt Toomua, Marika Koroibete and Reece Hodge. All they need is a little support from us Boarders! And, yes, we will invite the Knox Boarders to join us.

Rather spend a night in? Set the scene for Anzac day and watch what many consider to be the one of the finest films on WWI made. In this classic movie, two Australian sprinters face the brutal realities of war when they are sent to fight in the Gallipoli campaign in Turkey. You will see some familiar faces - actors Mel Gibson, Mark Lee, Bill Hunter and Bill Kerr are all exceptional. You will be stunned and saddened by this historically accurate film, but I can also guarantee you will be glad you watched.

How will you light up the dawn this year? The choice is yours – commemorate our veterans with a traditional Dawn Service at your local cenotaph, or honour them in front of the Boarding House at 6.00am. Dawn Service at Roseville This Anzac Day we’ll come together, in person and in spirit, to commemorate the men and women who have served our nation in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Capacity is limited at the service and social distancing is required along with check in via QR code. Not ready to get up quiet so early? Light a candle with your Boarder buddies and reflect during the Minute’s Silence.

Meet the newest addition to Team Love It, Mrs Myles. As the creator of the gorgeous laundry bags for our Year 7 Boarders, Mrs Myles is the master of all things textiles. This week she will share her talents with you in a textiles workshop where you will create a special, personalised gift for the special ‘mum’ in your life. We will organise some cards and paper so you can wrap and send the gift home, ready for that special someone to enjoy on Mother’s Day.

And, thanks to the invention of barefoot bowls and our undying love of life’s simple pleasures (sport and bistro food), the era of the trusty bowlo is not over yet. This week you have the chance of an afternoon of fun and friendship as we join the Shore Boarders for the challenge of this great sport.

Hidden in the beautiful Lavender Bay Parklands, Wendy’s (not so) Secret Garden is pure delight. Reflecting Wendy’s artistic background, aesthetics, colour, form, beauty and whimsy have driven the creation of the garden which is more like a stunning painting. Learn the story of how the garden was created and enjoy a peaceful afternoon in (hopefully) the sunshine.

Why not celebrate in another way? The NRL Telstra Premiership is closest to an elite sporting competition in the country and the State of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland is Australian sport’s greatest rivalry. Not quite the State of Origin, but this weekend you have the chance to watch the Sea Eagles take on the New Zealand Warriors at Lottoland Stadium, aka Brookvale Oval. Don the colours of the Warriors or the maroon and white of the Sea Eagles and get set for a great afternoon of sport.

Community Day from 5.00pm and the start of Boarders’ Week Community Days are special times in our Boarding calendar where all Boarders are required to be in attendance. For this special occasion, you need to be back in Boarding by 5.00pm on Saturday. You will then have time to prepare for a sumptuous dinner at 6.00pm followed by an evening of fun and dancing. Be ready to strut your stuff and win points for your House in the hotly-contested Angus Cup Disco Divas competition.

Community Day Today, we have a special treat – Chapel with the congregation from Pymble and Gordon Uniting Church joining us for a special service followed by a delicious brunch. The cuteness factor will also be on overload with no less than five baptisms on the schedule. Thank you to all of you for attending looking bright and beautiful in perfect winter uniform and a special thanks to our Boarder volunteers for showing our extended community around the College. A not-so-lazy Sunday afternoon will follow with the Sports Cup challenge between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. Which House will dominate the netball and dodgeball competitions to come out on top?

Week 5 is Boarders’ Week Get ready for an action-packed week where we celebrate and showcase our beautiful Boarding family. A separate program will follow but be ready for the Boarders verses Day Girls volleyball, netball and touch football competitions; Office and House decoration competition; lots of lunches with our Day Girl friends and the opportunity to thank the broader Pymble community for all that they do for us. And, make sure you keep Saturday 22 May free for a night of celebration with our Boarding community. Get set to dance the night away with your other family (i.e. mums, dads and brothers and sisters) and your Boarding family as we come together as one.

Why
Thrifting is like a sport. It requires stamina, patience, and, sometimes, upper body strength to carry all your finds. Thrift shopping is having a moment. More and more people are giving pre-loved clothing a second chance at life and for a good reason. Not only can great quality pieces be found for too-good-to-be-true prices, but, by buying second hand, you’re keeping still-wearable garments out of the landfill. Plus, who doesn’t love a good thrift shop find? If you’re new to the art of thrift shopping, Mrs Myles is all set to help you on the way. In part one of this project you will visit special selected vintage shops to find your treasures, you will then have a session (or more if you need it) in the textiles room to repurpose your finds and create the outfit of your dreams. National Reconciliation Week and Yiribana Gallery Leaving Goodlet House at 10.00am Opal Card National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. One way to increase our understanding of this most ancient of cultures is through art. The Yiribana Gallery at the Art Gallery of NSW is home to the largest permanent collection of Indigenous Australian art. The collection includes both traditional and contemporary works by aboriginal artists and features bark painting, sculpture, weaving, prints, photography and watercolours. Enjoy a guided tour of this most unique of collections and follow up your visit with a walk and picnic lunch in the beautiful Botanic Gardens.

Thrifting part two (come along, even if you missed part one!) 1.00pm to 5.00pm Textiles Room (JV04) Let the transformation begin! Work with Mrs Myles to stitch, dye, applique and/or repurpose your finds to create your own piece of fashion history. Didn’t get to part one of this project? You can still join in – we will have some fabrics, old garments and even some new white t-shirts ready for a makeover. Will it be tie-dye, printing or stitching? Completely up to you!

Week 8 WEDNESDAY 9 JUNE What
Jersey Day Jersey Day is an important day in our Boarding calendar when we remember the three Boarders we lost on the June Long Weekend 1993. Alanda Clark, Jane Gay and Prudence Papworth were travelling home for the long weekend when the plane they were in crashed on a hill just outside Young, killing all on board. We invite all students and staff to commemorate these special girls by wearing a jersey and bring a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go towards the The Alanda Clark, Jane Gay and Prudence Papworth Boarding Scholarship.

Whether it is a night out at a favourite restaurant, a trip to a local market or an inner-city expedition, get your ideas down on paper, suggest a date and we will do the best we can to make it happen. ORGANISE A SLEEPOVER We would love you to invite a friend from the Day School to stay over on a Friday or Saturday night. Propose some dates to your House Supervisor and make it happen!
