NEW: Mental Health First Aid Training

MHFA Training Course

Developed by Mental Health First Aid Australia and delivered by LSV accredited instructors the Mental Health First Aid Course will equip candidates to provide initial support to other adults who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis. Using a practical, evidence based action plan you will be equipped to aid friends and family until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis is resolved. This comprehensive and informative short course has been developed through the expert consensus of mental health professionals as well as people with lived experience.

The course covers mental health problems including depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance use as well as mental health crises including but not limited to suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, traumatic events and aggressive behaviours.

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of:

Are There Any Prerequisites for This Course?

There aren’t any prerequisites for our Mental Health First Aid Training course.

How Long Is the Course?

This is a 12-hour course delivered as either a 2-day training package (6 hours per day), or as 4 separate modules (3 hours each).

Why Should I Attend?

Mental Health First Aid Training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, giving you more confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. Participating in this course also helps decrease stigma surrounding mental health.

Mental Health Problems Covered

Depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance use.

Mental Health Crises Covered

Suicidal thoughts and behaviours, non-suicidal self-injury, panic attacks, traumatic events, severe psychotic states, severe effects from alcohol or other drug use and aggressive behaviours.

Am I Assessed in This Course?

There is no formal assessment in this course, but participants have the option to take an additional assessment (for no extra cost) to become a MHFA Australia accredited Mental Health First Aider.

Provide First Aid

Provide First Aid Training Course

In the ‘Provide First Aid Training course’ participants receive all the essential training from the ‘Basic Emergency Life Support’ training course with an additional first aid certification (HLTAID011). The course equips candidates with the skills and knowledge to act quickly and confidently in more than a dozen common first aid and emergency situations; managing the situation, assessing the casualty and communicating with emergency services. The course also covers first aid frameworks, one and two person CPR as well as choking.

The course was previously known as a Senior First Aid, Level 2 First Aid or Apply First Aid qualification.

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of:

Are There Any Prerequisites for This Course?

This course requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. It is recommended that candidates are 14 years in the calendar year they undertake the course.

In addition to this, candidates attending an update course must hold the current HLTAID003 Provide first aid Statement of Attainment prior to attending.

How Long Is the Course?

The course is ideal for those who are employed as an Organisational Health and Safety Representative or anyone who is required to hold a first aid qualification as part of their role. The course is however available to all adults, particularly those with a duty of care like care workers, sports coaches & trainers as well as parents and guardians.

What Will I Learn in This First Aid Course?

LSV’s first aid course focus includes covering the signs, symptoms and treatment options for incidents including CPR, shock, bleeding, crush injuries, burns, fractures, sprains and strains, spinal injuries, breathing and heart conditions, diabetes, seizures, and envenomation.

How Long Does My First Aid Certification Last?

The Provide First Aid course should be updated every 3 years. The CPR component (HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) should be updated yearly.

As the first aid course is competency based, you will need to ensure that you can demonstrate all the necessary requirements of the three units of competency. You will be given the opportunity to attend a course at a later date (at no charge), in order to retrain and be reassessed on the particular skill or area of knowledge.

Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

Basic Emergency Life Support Training Course

This course will equip candidates to act quickly and confidently in an emergency situation. The course focus includes casualty assessment, one and two person CPR, choking, situation management and emergency services communication. The course is also known as a Level 1 First Aid qualification.

Provide First Aid: Education and Care Setting

Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting Training Course

This course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults within an education and care setting. This includes asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

Specific licensing requirements, including requirements for refresher training, should be obtained from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and/or relevant state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authority.

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of:

Who Should Study This Course?

The Education and Child Care First Aid course is recommended for those working in preschool, day
care and outside of school hours (OOSH) care services, as well as teachers, parents and carers of young children. However, any adult can take this course.

What Will I Learn In This First Aid Course?

Life Saving Victoria’s Education and Child Care First Aid course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid, emergency life support and manage common injuries and conditions that may arise when caring for children.

Is My Certification Industry Recognised?

The course covers requirements for first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis management that satisfies
National Regulations in accordance with the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality
Authority (ACECQA).

How Long Does My First Aid Certification Last?

Provide Advanced First Aid Training Course

This course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge to provide an advanced first aid response, including management of the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance.
The Advanced First Aid course is often referred to as a level 3 first aid qualification.

The course is ideal for those who are employed in large and diverse workplaces, or workplaces deemed as high risk. Life Saving Victoria’s Advanced First Aid course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to confidently take control of a first aid incident until professional assistance arrives. The course focus covers the signs, symptoms and treatment options for incidents including CPR, shock, bleeding, crush injuries, burns, fractures, sprains and strains, spinal injuries, breathing and heart conditions, diabetes, seizures, envenomation and childbirth.

How Long Does My First Aid Certification Last?

Individuals should update their Provide Advanced First Aid qualification every 3 years. The CPR component (HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) should be updated yearly.
