18 March 2022 | Term 1, Week 7

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Thank you all for your support and assistance over the past two weeks.   It’s been a very quick 7 weeks so far, filled with many exciting and positive school and community activities.

A big thank you to the students and staff involved with the Year 5/6 T20 Cricket Carnival at Charles Veryard Oval yesterday.   Our kids looked fabulous wearing their interschool school shirts and represented our school proudly throughout the day. Participation in these events wouldn’t be possible without a great deal of organisation and planning, and I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of Mr Blair Ranford and Ms Heather Dexter in co-ordinating this year’s interschool carnival. Thank you also to the parents that were able to come along and cheer on our teams.

I’d like to acknowledge families for your continued support and assistance as we continue to navigate the current climate and manage an increased number of Covid-19 cases in and around the school. Over the past few weeks we have successfully worked through a number of scenarios, and will no doubt see this continue over the next couple of weeks. Please be aware that there is a high possibility that your child’s daily timetable may change as we continue to adapt and manage increasing staff shortages due to Covid and non-Covid related leave as we work through this busy time.  Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated, and thank you to the many families that have sent in notes of encouragement and thanks to staff.  These small gestures are gold at the moment.

A highlight of our annual school calendar takes place next week – Harmony Day. Unfortunately, we are unable to invite family and friends to join us this year due to the current public health protocols; however; we will do our best to capture the activities and share these with you.  Again, thank you for your understanding and cooperation, and we look forward to seeing everyone participating in this special day.

As we head into the final few weeks of term, let’s continue to work together to ensure that we finish on a very positive note and continue to bring “our best” to what we do and how we interact with one another. Respect, Responsibility and Resilience are our school values – for ourselves and each other.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

Kind regards,

Principal

Communication to Families & Carers - COVID-19

Harmony Day Celebrations - Thursday 24th March 2022

We are celebrating Harmony Day next Thursday morning at Yokine Primary School.  We will begin the day with a brief assembly and parade on the Quadrangle for PP - Year 6 students. Please note that this will be in line with current health protocols.

We encourage all students to dress in their traditional national dress, wear cultural attire or alternatively come dressed in orange

The assembly will be followed by a Cultural Dance Incursion for all classes.  Please note that the cost of the incursion will be meet by the school.

Unfortunately, parents are unable to attend but we will do our best to take lots of class photos, and will make these available.

What is Harmony Week?

Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.
Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Why orange?

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Our cultural diversity

Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world.

Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.

An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.

Late Arrivals & Pick Ups

We appreciate that there will be times when you are running late or last minute events impact on your regular routines, and please know we are here to help and provide assistance.

Over the past three weeks there have been several children arriving late each morning, and we seek your assistance in having your child at school before the bell at 8:50am.  In the afternoon please ensure children are collected promptly, and if you are running late please contact us and arrangements can be put in place.

At this early stage in the new school year it’s important that routines are in place and good habits established.

Containers for Change

We recently received a refund of $126 through Containers for Change.

Thank you to those who are supporting the initiative by dropping your recyclable containers to the school deposit bin. Please continue to bring them in. Well done YPS!

News from the Art Room

Tree trail artwork!

Students in rooms 4, 5 and 7 were lucky enough to take part in an art workshop with artist Jodie Davison last week. They helped make the artwork for the Barking Trees installation at Breckler Park, which is part of the art tree trail running from April 9th - May 9th. Students worked together using natural materials to spell out the word WOOF which will be hung in the trees. So, make sure you go on the trail and find the student's brilliant barking artwork! Yokine Primary School is the only school invited to make work for this trail and they worked brilliantly with the artist!

Harmony day Art project

This year all students in their Visual Art lessons will be working on the whole school Harmony Day art project. The school's old cow sculpture is getting a long overdue makeover and thanks to a generous donation from Bunnings we have a beautiful range of bright colours to use. Students have been sharing words meaning 'hello' in all the brilliant languages they speak, and these words will be used to decorate the sculpture.

Students have been hard at work giving the cow a sand down in preparation. I think she looks pretty pleased with all the attention. Watch this space for photos of the finished sculpture!

Donations for the art room

I would gratefully receive old newspapers before they hit your recycling bin. Also, I'm desperate for donations of red and black wool for an ANZAC art installation later in the term, please raid your craft cupboards.

Many thanks Abi Callow

WA PBS Update

This week in preparation for swimming lessons our whole school PBS focus is Responsibility and Respect.
  • We stay with our group
  • We listen to and follow adult instructions
  • We follow bus and venue rules to stay safe
At Yokine PS we teach and acknowledge respectful, responsible and resilient behaviours school wide. The swimming lesson expectations have been shared with students during the PBS lesson and PowerPoint. Students have been learning what our school values look like when on excursions and what procedures are in place to make sure these are safe, fun and enjoyable. During the PBS lesson students enjoyed a “visit” to the zoo.  Some of the exhibits were very interesting!

Please take the time to discuss the current PBS focus with your child.  If you have any questions or queries concerning Positive Behaviour Support, feel free to get in touch with your child’s teacher or contact a member of the WA PBS team through the front office.

Canteen Expression of Interest

Our canteen is an important part of our commitment to our school community, by providing healthy and affordable meals.  Whilst the facilities are not of a commercial standard, they are annually inspected and approved by the City of Stirling.

We are keen to explore new opportunities and are calling for Expressions of Interest.

If you are interested in working in a friendly student centred environment, providing morning tea and lunches for our students and staff, please contact us for more information on 9216 3350 or info@yokineps@education.wa.edu.au.

Voluntary Contributions

Please note that the $60 Voluntary Contribution is now payable.

The voluntary contributions made by parents and caregivers are essential to the School’s ability to deliver a transformative learning experience for your child. Your voluntary contributions will enable us to extend our capacity to add value to the learning experiences of our students. With the extra funds we are able to build on our literacy and numeracy programs, sports, arts and music programs and equipment.

The school office accepts Credit Cards and PayPass payments for all school accounts or the contributions can be paid through the QKR! app or by direct bank transfer.

T20 Blast Cricket Carnival

On Thursday 17 March Yokine primary School participated in a T20 Blast Cricket carnival against six other schools. Yokine was represented by two boys teams and one girls team. Our competitors competed hard all day and had some great results. The Boys A division team were narrowly beaten in the Grand final which was won by Sutherland Dianella. Congratulations to all our students who competed hard and displayed great respect, responsibly and resiliency throughout the day. A special thank you to the parent helpers, spectators and teachers who attended the carnival.

After Hours Visitors to School Grounds - School Watch

It doesn’t happen very often, but on occasion we do experience some unwanted visitors after hours.  Thank you to our local families and community members for keeping us informed and reporting any unusual activity at the school.

School Watch is a partnership between the WA Police and the Department of Education aimed at protecting public schools from vandalism, theft and damage. When you contact School Watch Security, Department security officers can quickly attend schools in the metropolitan area. The Police will attend if called.

If you live near a public school and see or hear suspicious behaviour immediately contact School Watch Security or the Police 131 444.

Traffic Wardens 2022

We have been advised by the Children's Crossing Unit of the WA Police that there is a current shortage of Traffic Wardens to operate school crossings, due to many retiring at the end of 2021.

Given the current circumstances with Covid-19, vaccinations and the demographics of our Traffic Wardens, there has not been as much interest in becoming a Traffic Warden this year. This being the case, quite a few crossings are currently unattended.

If any Parents/Grandparents are interested in becoming a Traffic Warden please contact the Children’s Crossings Unit direct on 6274 8731 and an application pack will be sent out. The current pay rate is around $25.58 per hour - two hours per day for five days per week.
