4 February 2022 | Term 1, Week 1

Good afternoon Parents and Carers,

It’s official, Term 1 2022 is well and truly into full swing.  It's been a great week and well done to everyone!

At Yokine Primary we focus on maintaining a strong professional learning community where students are successful, teachers are highly effective and parents are partners in their children's education.  I look forward to getting to know the many new families that have joined our school community this year, and extend a special welcome to our new staff members.  A reminder to all families, that should you have a query or wish to speak with a member of staff in relation to any aspect of your child's learning please do not hesitate to contact me or a member of the school team.

Our staff are dedicated and committed to ensuring all children have access to a positive and engaging educational experiences, and we are looking forward to your involvement and support.  Please stay in touch, and here's to a wonderful year ahead.

Have a great weekend.  Take care and stay safe.

Kind regards,

Principal

Home - School Communication

School communities can achieve great things by working collaboratively and in partnership with one another, and it’s the little things and personal contributions done often and on a regular basis that produce the greatest benefits for our children.

A strong, supportive home-school partnership is essential to your child’s success at school, and it is important to stay in touch with what is happening in your child’s classroom and inform staff of any changes to family routines or procedures.

As always, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher should you have a query or require clarification in relation to a classroom matter or an aspect of your child’s learning program. Teachers are best placed to speak with you and should be your “first point of call” in relation to information or issues regarding your child’s educational program. Alternatively, it’s the school’s expectation that staff will regularly liaise with you in relation to your child’s learning and social development, and should the need arise you will be contacted to arrange a time to speak over the phone with you or arrange a meeting.

Your continued support, both now and throughout the year, in having children on time, prepared and ready for school each day is greatly appreciated.

Student Attendance

We want to make sure all children get the best education possible which is why attending school every day is so important.

Western Australian law stipulates that all school-aged children must go to and attend school every day.

Each school is required to keep accurate attendance records for all its students. This includes taking attendance:
  • in the morning and afternoon for students in Kindergarten to Year 6
  • at every lesson for secondary school students.
When a student’s attendance falls below 90%, the school principal is required to investigate the matter and develop a plan (in consultation with the family) to address and restore regular attendance.

Developing the habit of going to school every day is vital so children do not miss out on important ideas and skills they need for future learning.

Did you know:
  • missing half a day of school each week equates to one month of missed learning each year
  • the attendance habits set by children when they first start school continue throughout their school life
  • if children miss half a day of school each week between Pre-primary and Year 10, they would miss almost one full year of learning
  • learning is cumulative – if children miss a day, it is harder for them to catch up.
You can help by arriving and collecting your children on time; making sure they get nutritious meals and enough sleep; and making appointments with doctors, dentists and specialists, and making holiday plans during school holidays and not during the school term.

If one of your children is unwell and unable to go to school, let the school know straight away by telephone or by the school app if they have one. If they miss a day it is important you talk with their teacher to find out how you can help them catch up. If your child cannot attend school because of their mental or physical health contact your school to see what options are available for your child.

Class Meetings

Once again the school is offering parents the opportunity to meet with their child's class teacher.  This is a valuable opportunity to find out more about class routines and procedures, and how you can support your child's learning.

We are planning to conduct these information sessions in the coming weeks, subject to advice received from the Department of Education, and further details will be forwarded through to you by your child’s teacher.  If we are unable to meet face-to-face please know that an alternative format will be put in place.

Parents will be asked to confirm their attendance via  our on-line booking SOBs.  If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact the school or your child's teacher.

Canteen Update

Unfortunately the Yokine PS canteen is currently closed.

Our canteen is an important part of our commitment to our school community by providing healthy and affordable meals.  Whilst the facilities are not of a commercial standard, they are annually inspected and approved by the City of Stirling.

We are keen to explore new opportunities and will be calling for Expressions of Interest in the near future.

If you are interested in working in a friendly student centred environment, providing morning tea and lunches for our students and staff, please contact us for more information on 9216 3350 or info@yokineps@education.wa.edu.au.

Voluntary Contributions

Please note that voluntary contributions are now payable.

The voluntary contributions made by parents and caregivers are essential to the School’s ability to deliver a transformative learning experience for your child. Your voluntary contributions will enable us to extend our capacity to add value to the learning experiences of our students. With the extra funds we are able to build on our literacy and numeracy programs, sports, arts and music programs and equipment.

Your contributions will also enable us to expand our range of digital technologies to support learning and prepare your child for a digital environment. We will also be able to make significant improvement to the early childhood play environment.

The school office accepts Credit Cards and PayPass payments for all school accounts and excursions.

Learning from Home Update

We are committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all children, and will continue to update all families as information comes through to us from the Department of Education.  There will no doubt be some modifications to how we generally do things at school over the coming weeks or months, but pleased be assured that we are well placed and ready to work through any changes with you.

Staff are working diligently on establishing daily routines, with a key focus on getting to know one another and establishing relationships.  Should we be required to move to a format other than face-to-face teaching it's important that we are ready and prepared, and communicating quickly with everyone will be a priority.

To assist with this please ensure all contact details are up to date and please download SCHOOLSTREAM.

Your child's teacher will be in contact with you by email, and will invite you to join Class DoJo for 2022.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation.

Traffic Wardens 2022

We have been advised by the Children's Crossing Unit of the WA Police that there is a current shortage of Traffic Wardens to operate school crossings, due to many retiring at the end of 2021.

Given the current circumstances with Covid-19, vaccinations and the demographics of our Traffic Wardens, there has not been as much interest in becoming a Traffic Warden this year. This being the case, quite a few crossings are currently unattended.

If any Parents/Grandparents are interested in becoming a Traffic Warden please contact the Children’s Crossings Unit direct on 6274 8731 and an application pack will be sent out. The current pay rate is around $25.58 per hour - two hours per day for five days per week.

We are a "Nut Aware" School

Please be aware that some of our students have a SEVERE allergic reaction to peanuts / nuts and peanut / nut products.

It would be appreciated if you could ensure that food brought to school for play-time and lunch does not contain any peanuts or peanut / nut products.

Children are not encouraged to share or "swap" food that has been packed for them from home.  Thank you for your co-operation.
