Dear Parents and Community Members,
Last Friday we took time to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of many at our final assembly, and this newsletter edition focuses on their achievements. The ongoing commitment and support of our families, staff, volunteers, P&C and School Board has ensured another successful and enjoyable year for our school community. Thank you all for your support throughout 2021 and we look forward to your continued support in the future.
The P&C held its final meeting for the year last Tuesday night, and generously pledged funding that has assisted with updating and expanding our school collection of Home Readers and key Reading Resource Books across K-6. This is a wonderful addition to our school and we look forward to working in partnership with the P&C again in 2022. I would like to acknowledge all members of the P&C for the time and effort that they willingly give to support our students and school, especially those that volunteer to take on positions as office bearers or committee members. Special thanks to our Uniform co-ordinators for being on hand last Wednesday afternoon and evening to assist with the Kindy Parent Workshops - your efforts are greatly appreciated.
The final two weeks of 2021 are now upon us, with several special events and activities planned to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and successes of our students. I look forward to seeing many of you this Thursday, at the Twilight Concert. This is a new format this year, though I know the children are just as excited as ever to be performing for us all. Don't forget to bring something to sit on - either a cushion, picnic rug or chairs.
Kind regards,
|

Music News
The Yokine Primary School choir gathered in Dianella Plaza on Saturday 20th November in our colourful choir polo shirts. We sang four songs to Yokine families and the general public. We started with the ever popular "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars, where singers were accompanied with the guitar. Next, we sang a successful rendition of "Choir" by Guy Sebastian. We finished with "Feliz Navidad" made famous by Jose Feliciano and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". The choir students sang so confidently, and energetically that the regular shoppers probably didn't need their second coffee for the morning!

On Wednesday 1st December, Year 5 and 6 students metamorphosed into teachers when they invited Rooms 2 & 3 to the Music Room and taught them in small groups. This was a satisfying and challenging experience for many of the students as they passed on their knowledge to their successors. The senior students had spent 2 hours planning their lesson content, behaviour management strategies and resources and took their teaching task very seriously. The Year 1 students were captivated by their young teachers and enjoyed the immersive experience.

Last Thursday 2nd December the YPS Choir performed Christmas Carols at Aegis Aged Care Centre. They sang beautifully and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their concert. At the end of the performance the children handed out Christmas Cards to all the residents.
Special thanks to Ms Banning, Ms Phillips and Ms Hirsch who accompanied the choir. As always it was a highlight for us all.

Challenge Club
Students presented a 2-minute speech in the last week of the Challenge Club. The topic for speeches was student driven and based on their area of interest including pottery, Zeus, architecture, Greek Mythology and the Ancient Olympic Games. The speeches were engaging and very informative. Well done for the commitment and dedication towards your studies and the pottery, and architectural models were incredible. Keep up the excellent work!

The PBS expectation for this fortnight is “We ask for help when we need it”. This expectation falls under the value of Resilience. Depending on your problem, you may ask your teacher, an EA, the peer mediators or your friends to help you. This could be during learning or play time. There is always someone who will be able to help you, but remember they can’t help, if you don’t ask!

2022
Planning and preparation for 2022 is well under way. Enrolments for Kindergarten and Pre Primary are in the final stages of being completed, which is always an exciting time for the many new families that will be joining our school in the new year. If you know that your family is not returning next year, or are aware of any families moving into the area and intending to enrol please contact the Front Office staff as soon as possible. This greatly assists us with our class structures and enables us to be well prepared for the beginning of the new school year.

Peer Mediators
Our Peer Mediators spent the afternoon on 6 December chilling in the Library with a movie, popcorn and ice creams.
We thank them for volunteering in their lunchtimes, all year, to assist YPS students in the playground.
Job well done!

Traditional Aboriginal Games
In the last two weeks, the Traditional Aboriginal Games that the Year 1 to 6 students have been playing are Noongar Wana and Boomerang games.
Noongar Wana is played by Noongar girls in the southwest of WA. The girls use an underarm throw to hit a target, which is defended by a player using a wana (digging stick).
Boomerang throwing was a popular activity with Aboriginal groups in many parts of Australia. The returning boomerang was often used for the purposes of sport and amusement. The word boomerang had its origins from the word for a “fighting stick” that was thrown.
