AGENTS, BUYERS, SALEYARD OPERATORS, PROCESSORS, VENDORS AND STAFF ARE A CRITICAL ELEMENT OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN

As the prevalence of Coronavirus (COVID-19) escalates and emerges across greater areas in Australia it is vital that all agents be vigilant, respectful of others and adhere to best practices at saleyards to ensure the welfare of others. ALPA asks all members and staff to take special care irrespective of your own good health to safeguard buyers, other agents, administrative staff, clients, members of the public who may have a spouse, family member or relative in whom they have close contact who could suffer the worst consequences if exposed to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
There are many extremely vulnerable members of society who could be severely affected by transmission from an unknown source.

ALPA RECOMMENDS AGENTS PROHIBIT NON ESSENTIAL PARTICIPANTS IN THE LIVESTOCK SALE FROM ATTENDING LIVESTOCK AUCTIONS. Put simply, this prohibition extends to members of the public until further notice. We also insist that all visitors be required to sign a Declaration prior to entering the saleyards entering their name, address and phone number. This will provide traceability of attendees.

ALPA requests that at all livestock markets prior to the commencement of the sale the Auctioneer makes a clear and precise statement to all attendees to consider the health and safety of others by maintaining at least 1 metre distance from others, that there be no handshaking and that proper hygienic practices be adopted.

We would suggest that you arrange to film and or record this statement being made. Please advise that any person who is suffering any symptoms such as fever (high temperature), cough or difficulty breathing, should seek medical care and not attend the sale. Whilst we do not condone age discrimination, it may be prudent to advise those most susceptible to the virus such as the elderly to reconsider attending the sale for their own benefit even if they are members of staff. We would also caution any promotion of any livestock auction as a social gathering or event whilst this pandemic evolves. Please be mindful of any staff member in the administrative offices who may be subject to any respiratory conditions or perhaps be undergoing immune suppressant medication.

As a final word every member of the supply chain, from agents, producers, buyers, saleyard operators, staff and members of the public want livestock sales to continue in saleyards. Everyone who goes to work is entitled to intelligent and common sense measures to ensure health and safety.
