Dear Parents/Carers,

And just like that we are at the conclusion to the end of week 7 of Term 1, which means we have four weeks left of term! It’s been a busy and productive term, with many changes for staff, students, and families.

We are sincerely grateful to you all for your adaptability and resilience with the current COVID-19 safety practices, including completing daily Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT). We are also exceptionally appreciative to families and staff for reporting any positive results to the school so quickly. This certainly makes it more efficient in communicating to the school community.

Thank you to all of our families who have participated in our Term 1 SSG process. The Individual Education Plans (IEPs) will be available via Compass by the end of term. You will be notified of the date when they are ready. This is also a timely reminder that if you have not received log in details to access Compass, please contact the school.

The tendering documentation for our Capital works was completed on the 22nd of February, and the next step will involve the successful tenderer being awarded on the 22nd March. We will know more about the building timelines post this announcement, and we are hopeful that works will begin not long after 22nd March.

Our mini schools have recently decided on their School Captain’s and Vice Captains which is very exciting, and more details have been shared with you in the mini school updates. It is also lovely to see so many students wearing the new school uniform. If you have not yet been to PSW in Howitt Street to view our new uniform, please go and have a look. They are open every day except Sundays.

It is also welcoming news that our FARM Campus café now has the SKIP app available to the community, so you are now able to order coffee, then go to the café to collect it. At present it is just hot drinks that can be pre-ordered, with the possibility of food being added at a later date. Whilst we have not yet received permission for our cafés to open to the public for sit down dinning again, the approval of take away coffee via the SKIP app is certainly some positive news of things ‘coming back to life’.

In regards to PBIS news, keep an eye out on your child’s Compass dashboard each Friday to see if they are a PBIS (Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports) winner! They will receive a certificate and prize at school, but sometimes things get lost in the transition home, or there is too much to remember and it gets forgotten about. The pin will  be green, and will indicate which of our school values (Safety, Respect, or Responsibility) your child has demonstrated over the week.

A reminder to you that it’s the Labour Day long weekend and Monday is a Public holiday. We look forward to seeing all our students on Tuesday. Take care everyone.

Kind regards,
Principal Class Team

It’s a wonderfully exciting time for our grade 6 students having completed their Junior School Captain applications. Staff have narrowed it down, and shortlisted our top 8 candidates! The entire Junior School watched the student filmed interviews this week, and voted for their 2022 Junior School Captains and Vice Captains.

Applicants pictured from left to right: Georgia, Robbie, Manon, Grady, Kaden, Immy, Cameron, Krystal.

The School Captain and Vice Captain announcements took place shortly before this newsletter got emailed to everyone.

Congratulations to Captains - Robbie Bolden and Georgia Wandin.
Vice-Captains - Grady Coulson and Imogene Tyrrell

PPLC2 News

Room 31 is buzzing along in Term One!  We have settled into a regular routine and are working well in our small Literacy and Numeracy groups. In Literacy, we are focusing on rhyming words and last week on Dr Seuss Day we did lots of rhyming word activities! We also had some green eggs and ham!! In Numeracy, it’s all about counting. Science this term is about Living Things and Lifecycles. Students made a ‘Hairy Harry’ this week and we will enjoy watching the ‘grass heads’ grow and even giving them haircuts if needed!

PPLC3 News

In room 12 this week Imogene and Trevor have been enjoying Dancing with Craige in P.E.

In Room 10 this week we have been learning about the letter E. Students then painted brown E’s. During cooking, students made some brownie's.

PPLC4 (Early Years) News

Over the past two weeks, PPLC4 have started our numeracy and literacy streaming groups. Our twice-weekly streaming lessons involve students grouped into classes based on their learning needs. In our literacy streaming classes, we explored and identified the letter S & A and their sounds. Our numeracy classes involved exploring and identifying numbers, and counting different objects one at a time. Students are mixed with students from other classes in PPLC4 and will also get experience being taught by different teachers in the learning community. Below are some photos of students in PPLC4 learning in our streaming lessons.
Middle School News

Clean up Australia Day Sunday 6th March
Clean Up Australia Day is a great chance for our students to show how they care for the environment and the spaces we share. Students were busy last week making sure our shared spaces were clean and tidy for all to use. Thanks for all your hard work PLC1.

Tuesday 1st March
What fun we had on pancake Tuesday! Not only did students get to spend the day eating pancakes, they also had fun with pancake recipes and pancake stories in literacy and numeracy. Reading, writing, measuring and snacking…..there were pancakes everywhere.

Visits to the Early Years classrooms
PLC2 students have begun visiting the early years classrooms. It was beautiful to see the positive social interactions between the students and the confidence that was shown by our older students. This week students participated in some sensory activities together and played outside together. It was the beginning of developing some cross age friendships and positive guidance for your younger students. Middle School students have always thrived when working with our younger students at BSS. We will be looking at doing further cross age mentoring as a Friday elective in term 2.

Middle School Captains and Vice Captains

We hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend.
Senior School News

The VCAL students have hit the ground running with their teaching and learning program. Every VCAL student planned and delivered a student leadership speech. These speeches were recorded by classroom staff and then viewed by staff and students from across the campus. This activity is the first piece of evidence students have completed in their Oral Communication class. From these speeches, staff and students all voted on for the 2022 BSS School Captains and Vice-Captains. We would like to congratulate all students who nominated for a specific role; the level of applicants that we had to choose from was exceptional. It gives us great pleasure to announce Bailey Ohlsen and Jasmine Nanscawen as our School Captains, and Braiyden Oakley and Shakira Heath as our Vice-Captains. Following on from these appointments, classes are now in the processes of voting for their class captains. These will be announced in the next newsletter.

Thank you to all caregivers who have met virtually with their child’s homeroom teacher. These SSG meetings provide the staff with valuable information in updating and setting both long term and short term goals for each student’s IEP. Teachers are currently writing these plans and they will be available on Compass later in the term.

On Wednesday the 23rd March we have our annual Careers Expo at the FARM Campus. Our work experience and careers co-ordinator, Loretta, has been liaising with various stakeholders who are very excited to be coming to our school. This event is open to all students, we strongly encourage everyone to come along and chat about post-school options. Please see the flyer for further information.

The FARM Café is very excited to be serving members of the public again in a takeaway only capacity. The public will need to download the ‘Skip App’ and order through there. This will allow the students and staff to prepare your order for easy collection from the café. We look forward to seeing you ‘drop in’ to collect your orders.

Lately there has been an increased number of teenagers organising parties through social media on the weekend in the community. Whilst we encourage students to develop their social skills and spend time on the weekends relaxing we would just like to remind students to do so in a safe manner. Victoria Police have great resources available on their website to assist in the planning of parties. If you would like further information on the ‘Partysafe’ resources, please go to https://www.police.vic.gov.au/party-safe.

Our students are doing a great job of handing in their phones each day. If you need to contact your child or deliver a message within school hours please do so through the school. You can either ring the school directly on 5334 1302 (same number as the Gillies St Campus) or by contacting your child’s teacher.

It is great to see an increasing number of students wearing the school uniform. The t-shirts and rugby tops are the most popular items at the moment. If you would like to purchase any of the items please go to PSW in Howitt St, and remember to mention your child is in seniors as the uniform is different to that of the Primary School and Middle School at Gillies St.

Thanks,
All the staff from the Senior School
